Chapter 1016 – Hunger with Geography

Cyrinne watched him. "But I thought you could track it."

Lux’s gaze snapped back to her. "Why would you think that?"

"Because if anyone can track stolen ownership, debt, hidden value, and power extraction, it is you."

Lux smiled faintly. "Flattery from Envy?"

"Observation."

Sira crossed her arms. "You think Kaelmor might also hold this legendary demon prisoner."

Cyrinne nodded. "I do."

Aela’s face grew pale again and looked down.

Cyrinne continued, "It was sleeping since the beginning. That was the tale. It did not wake. It did not rule. It did not demand worship."

"Sleeping creatures are easy to steal from," Lux said softly.

Everyone heard the dangerous quiet in his voice.

Cyrinne’s gaze sharpened. "Yes. Taking power from a sleeping creature is simple. Much simpler than forcing power from something awake enough to resist."

Lux’s expression hardened. "Makes sense."

A pre-Sin entity.

Something ancient enough that Envy’s origin tale still remembered it.

A creature that may have been guarded, then betrayed, then buried under political myth until Kaelmor found it. Or inherited it. Or stole it the same way he stole everything else, with a smile and a ledger that pretended theft was administration.

Lux placed his cup down. "So where is it?"

Cyrinne looked away.

That was answer enough.

Lux sighed. "Of course."

"I do not know the exact location," she said. "If I did, I would have brought more than a warning."

"Do you know what it is?"

Cyrinne hesitated.

The hesitation was small.

But in a room full of predators, royalty, ancient beings, and women who could smell lies through perfume, it might as well have been a scream.

Lux’s eyes narrowed. "Cyrinne."

She exhaled slowly. "They said it wasn’t from this world."

The words landed strangely.

Lux did not move. "Not from this world," he repeated.

Cyrinne nodded. "Not from our world."

Corvus made a low sound.

Zehar, for once, stopped trying to steal coffee.

Cyrinne looked at the table rather than Lux.

"My mother said it came before Hell was Hell as we know it. Back then, demons still fought each other without houses, without law, without territory lines that meant anything for more than a week. Souls wandered after falling into this realm and waited to be eaten by whatever found them first."

Aela whispered, "That is cruel."

Mira gave a dry laugh. "That was Hell."

Cyrinne nodded. "Exactly. It was hunger with geography."

Lux said nothing.

Cyrinne continued, voice growing steadier now, as if speaking the tale made it easier to wear. "Then something came."

Lux’s system flickered.

[Anomaly Type: External Origin]

[Possible Classification: Outsider Entity]

[Correlation: Unknown]

[Threat/Potential Value: Extreme]

Cyrinne’s eyes lifted to meet his. "The power was huge. Really huge. Not king huge. Not sin lord huge. Something else."

Sira’s pride did not like that.

It showed in the way her chin lifted a fraction.

But even she did not interrupt.

Cyrinne went on, "The tale says it did not conquer Hell. It observed us. Studied us. Then it did something no demon understood."

Lux’s voice was quiet. "What?"

"It brought civilization."

In Hell, civilization had teeth.

Cyrinne’s mother’s tale sounded absurd at first. A legendary demon not from this world, arriving in ancient Hell and teaching monsters how not to devour everything immediately. But the more Lux thought about it, the uglier the logic became.

Power did not only mean destruction.

Power could be structure.

Rules.

Contracts.

Debt.

Inheritance.

Roads.

Names.

The first civilization in Hell would not have begun because demons suddenly became kind.

It would have begun because something strong enough forced them to understand that organized hunger produced more than chaotic hunger.

Gula slowly lowered her fork. "So... it taught demons to save food for later?"

Everyone looked at her.

She blinked. "What? That is civilization."

Lux rubbed his forehead. "She is not fully wrong, which makes this worse."

Cyrinne gave a small laugh despite herself. "My mother said the same thing, less directly."

Lux leaned back.

His mind was moving too fast now.

A pre-Sin outsider who brought civilization.

Guarded by early Envy because admiration came before envy.

And now the king’s personal guards were moving through underworld routes, laying bait that did not lead to the mortal realm.

Lux looked at Corvus. "The route you followed. Did it move toward old Envy territory?"

Corvus tilted his head. "Not current Envy territory."

Lux’s eyes sharpened. "Old."

Corvus’s feathers flattened.

"...Possibly."

Cyrinne’s gaze snapped to him.

Corvus continued, "Pre-house border maps are messy. Most official archives pretend those places never existed."

Lux smiled without warmth. "That means yes."

Zehar wobbled.

It was a small wobble at first.

Then a bigger one.

Then the jelly slowly rose on the table like a translucent pudding attempting to become a mountain.

"I can help you."

Every eye turned to him.

Zehar puffed himself up. The effect would have been impressive if he still possessed bones, shoulders, or anything resembling a dignified ancient body. Unfortunately, he was currently a smug jelly with coffee stains on one side of his transparent body.

Still, he tried.

Hard.

"Don’t forget," Zehar said, voice deepening with all the majesty he could scrape from his ruined pride, "I am an ancient lord."

Lux looked at him.

Zehar glared back. "A respected one," he added. "Before I turned into... this."

He gestured to his whole jelly body with a tiny tendril.

Then he looked directly at Lux.

The glare said everything. ’Your fault.’

Lux smirked. "That form has benefits."

Zehar trembled in offense. "Name one."

"You don’t need chairs."

Gula nodded thoughtfully. "Also, very portable."

"Not praise!" Zehar snapped.

Corvus made a suspicious choking sound behind Lux, which was definitely not laughter because ravens were cowards when comedy became dangerous.

Zehar ignored him with great difficulty. "Ancient things are my specialty," Zehar continued. "I can use my connections in the Shadow Corridors to search for it. One of them must know something about this sleeping legendary demon."

Lux’s expression shifted.

Zehar noticed. And, because he was Zehar, immediately became unbearable.

"Besides..." He puffed his jelly chest higher. Somehow. "We elders know better than you youngsters."
