Chapter 1011: Good News
Chapter 1011 – Good News
Lux rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Good news. Before Sira decides this counts as work and makes Lullaby hit me again."
Corvus lowered his voice slightly, which made everyone lean in despite themselves. "The king still has not suspected you."
The dining room changed.
Not visibly.
But every woman at the table sharpened.
Lux’s expression did not move. "Continue."
Zehar slurped more coffee, then said, "All his attention is on the Shadow Corridors."
Corvus snapped his beak. "Stop stealing my dramatic pacing."
Zehar ignored him. "He killed five lords today."
The table went silent.
Lux’s gaze darkened. "Five?"
Corvus nodded. "Five confirmed. Two minor corridor houses were erased. One lord turned into a public chandelier."
Gula slowly lowered her fork. "That is... excessive."
Mira snorted. "That is panic."
Yue’s face remained calm, but her eyes sharpened. "Or performance."
Naomi nodded. "Both can be true."
Corvus fluffed his wings. "The ancient lords have been pulling nasty pranks on him. Dream spells, false assassination attempts, mirror curses, fake treasury leaks, throne whispers. Very childish. Very funny from a distance."
Lux’s mouth curved faintly. "Shadow Corridor humor."
Zehar wobbled. "They sent him a dream where his crown grew teeth and ate his ears."
Sira looked impressed despite herself. "Creative."
Corvus continued, "He went mad. Not publicly mad."
Lux’s eyes narrowed. "Worse."
"Much worse. He is killing people while pretending he is amused. Palace staff are terrified. Ministers are afraid to breathe near him. His warders are collapsing from overwork. His personal guard doubled patrols and still missed three fake assassination signatures."
Rava leaned forward. "Fake?"
"Some fake," Corvus said. "Some real. That is the beauty. They flood him with false alarms until he relaxes, then someone actually tries to murder him."
Fiera’s tails flicked once. "That is fox-like."
Mira looked at her.
Fiera smiled. "Don’t look at me like that. I said fox-like, not Fiera-like."
Corvus tilted his head. "I think revolution is near."
Hell’s balance had been rotting beneath the throne for years, maybe centuries. Lux had known it. Zavros had known it. The old sin houses had probably known it and pretended not to because pretending was cheaper than civil war.
But hearing it spoken at his dinner table, with Aela freshly rescued and Kaelmor still unknowingly chasing a false sovereign, made the air taste different.
Gula swallowed her food. "So... that was the good news?"
Zehar nodded cheerfully. "Yes."
Gula stared. "I hate your definition."
Lux leaned back in his chair, robe shifting slightly at his collar. "No. That is good news. It means the diversion worked."
Sira looked at him sharply. "It also means Hell is unstable."
"Hell is always unstable."
Aela watched him quietly.
This was a different Lux again.
This Lux was sharper.
The air around him became numbers, risks, routes, and consequences.
Aela finally understood a little why they called him CFO.
Not because he counted coins.
Because he counted collapse.
Lux looked at Corvus. "And the bad news?"
Corvus’s feathers smoothed flat. "The king sent his personal guards to all his prisoners."
Aela’s fingers tightened around her spoon.
Ely noticed and placed a hand lightly over hers.
Corvus continued, "Not just guards. Ward inspectors. The kind loyal only to him, not the palace bureaucracy."
Lux’s expression became very still. "Timing?"
"Already moving. Some arrived within the hour. Others are en route. Hidden sites, old mountains, sealed wells, underworld lakes, mortal realm pocket ruins. He’s checking every long-term power source he still has."
Yue’s eyes darkened. "He felt Aela disappear."
Corvus hopped along Lux’s shoulder, claws careful not to snag the robe. "He also sent spies to see who is behind all this."
Sira’s face hardened. "Toward Greed?"
"Not directly," Corvus said. "Not yet. That is the bad-good part. He still believes the unknown sovereign narrative. He thinks something ancient is eating his prisoners to rise like him."
Lux’s mouth curved without humor.
"But he is no fool," Corvus continued. "The spies are broad. Shadow Corridors. Old sovereign rumor circuits. Mortal realm anomaly zones. Ancient beast sites. Heaven-facing channels. And yes, distant observation around major sin houses."
Naomi folded her hands. "So even if he does not suspect Lux, he is tightening the map."
"Exactly," Corvus said.
Rava looked toward Lux. "How much time do we have?"
Lux didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes lowered to the table.
He exhaled. "Less than before."
Sira crossed her arms. "That is not an answer."
"It is the honest one."
Aela’s voice came quietly. "There are others."
Every face turned to her.
She looked down at her hands. "Others like me."
Lux nodded once. "Yes."
"Bound willingly?"
"Some. Not all."
Aela’s face grew paler.
Mira leaned back, eyes cold. "So if he sends guards to all of them, he may reinforce the seals."
Yue nodded. "Or move them."
Fiera added, "Or kill the weak ones before anyone else takes them."
Silence.
That possibility sat like a knife in the center of the table.
Lux’s gaze sharpened. "He won’t kill them casually."
Sira looked at him. "Because he needs them."
"Yes. Each one is power. If his reserves are already depleted, destroying prisoners is last resort."
Naomi’s voice stayed calm. "But if he thinks someone else will consume them?"
Lux’s fingers stopped tapping. "Then he may choose to burn assets rather than let a rival claim them."
Corvus cawed softly. "There is more."
Lux looked at him.
Corvus continued, "One spy network is specifically checking for traces of Lux Vaelthorn."
The room went cold.
Lux lifted one hand slightly. "Expected."
Sira snapped, "Expected doesn’t mean acceptable."
Corvus nodded. "They do not suspect you as the sovereign. Not yet. They are checking whether Greed House has communicated with Shadow Corridor factions, Heaven, or ancient archives."
Zehar added, "Your disappearance made them curious."
Lux deadpanned. "My vacation made them curious."
"Your vacation involved Upper Realm meetings, a freed dragon, a resurrected first elf, and a bunch of mortal women," Zehar said. "Very subtle."
Then the system window opened at the edge of his vision.
