Chapter 525: The foundation of a Law

Crimson flames flickered above his right shoulder while water flowed weightlessly around his left.

However, none of the elements felt completely under his control.

They resisted.

It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but now that Zenith had opened his mind to the concept, Elion could feel something hidden within each one.

Fire strained to spread beyond the shape he had given it.

Water sought the easiest path through the air.

They were not conscious in the same way a living being was, but they possessed a kind of natural instinct.

A Will.

The World Eyes activated instinctively, their golden and abyssal colors returning as he looked upon the streams of mana surrounding him.

For the first time, he did not merely see their color, density, or movement.

He saw their intentions.

Fire was hunger.

Water was adaptation.

Each affinity resisted him in its own way, and every spell he had ever cast had unknowingly been an act of forcing those instincts to submit to his own intent.

The revelation seemed embarrassingly obvious now.

A Fireball did not form merely because he fed mana into a memorized structure. His intent demanded that the flames gather, compress, and remain contained rather than spread freely.

His Will forced the fire to behave against its nature until he released the spell. However, overpowering an element was crude and inefficient.

Rather than forcing fire to abandon its desire to burn and spread, he could construct the spell in a way that embraced those desires. Instead of suppressing its Will, he could guide it towards the same purpose as his own.

The Fireball hovering above his shoulder suddenly changed.

The unstable flames stopped struggling against their spherical shape.

They condensed naturally, rotating around a tiny central point while greedily consuming every trace of fire mana nearby.

The amount of mana Elion had invested remained exactly the same, yet the heat released by the spell multiplied several times over.

The room rapidly grew warmer.

Tessa instinctively took a step back. "That is still a basic Fireball, right?"

Zenith’s eyes sparkled.

"Yes, but he is no longer forcing the fire to remain compressed. He has convinced its Will that everything outside the sphere is something waiting to be consumed."

Aria looked between the flame and Zenith. "He convinced the fire?"

"It is not truly alive," Mira said slowly, beginning to understand. "He merely shaped the spell so that its natural behavior supports what he wants it to do."

Zenith nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly!"

The Fireball disappeared as Elion redirected his attention towards the water flowing around his other side.

Whenever he cast a Water Bullet, he normally compressed the liquid and forced it forwards using pressure.

But water did not desire to remain still.

It sought movement.

It adapted to whatever path lay before it and persisted until resistance weakened.

Elion raised one finger, and the stream of water twisted around his arm before forming a small sphere above his palm.

He did not command it to become rigid.

Instead, he allowed it to remain fluid, merely giving its movement a direction and purpose.

The sphere suddenly shot across the room.

Rather than traveling in a straight line, it curved around Mira, slipped between Aria and Tessa, then struck the center of a newly summoned training doll.

There was no violent explosion.

The water sank into the construct through the smallest openings in its surface before expanding from within.

The training doll ruptured into fragments.

Tessa stared at the remains. "That was unsettling. It entered its body and tore it apart from the inside."

The system chimed again.

[Host has comprehended the rudimentary Will of Water: Adaptation.]

[Host has comprehended the rudimentary Will of Fire: Consumption.]

[Comprehension remains incomplete.]

[Current understanding is insufficient to form a complete Law.]

Elion finally opened his ordinary eyes, suppressing the World Eyes once again.

The different streams of mana gradually dispersed, though a faint pressure remained around his body.

Mira continued staring at him.

"So, did you break through or not?"

"I do not think my rank increased."

"That pulse did not feel like nothing," Tessa said.

Elion glanced towards the system messages. "Well... I gained a rudimentary understanding of the Wills of Fire and Water."

Zenith’s mouth fell open slightly. "You understood two at once?" She had seen it from the two spells he had just cast, but all she needed was the confirmation; after all, there was a possibility that he could have failed.

"Only partially." Elion looked towards Zenith. "What exactly happens once someone completely understands an element’s Will?"

"It depends upon what they awaken," Zenith replied. "Understanding a Will does not necessarily increase your rank immediately, but it changes the way your spells interact with the world. Eventually, that understanding becomes the foundation upon which you comprehend a Law."

She pointed towards the remains of the training doll.

"Your water adapted to the obstacle instead of crashing against it. If you continue developing that understanding, your Water Magic may eventually become almost impossible to block. It could flow around defenses, seep through barriers, or gradually erode anything that attempts to stop it."

Her gaze moved towards the spot where the Fireball had hovered.

"As for your fire, it accepted consumption as its purpose. With enough understanding, it may begin consuming other mana, barriers, spells, or perhaps even things that ordinary fire should never be capable of burning."

Elion’s eyes brightened once more.

Tessa immediately pointed at him. "Do not break through again before she finishes explaining."

Elion could only give her a wry smile. He hadn’t meant to break through so casually; If it happened again, what could he do about it?

Mira had a thoughtful look on her face.

"You said different people can awaken different Wills from the same affinity. Does that mean another Fire Mage might understand something completely different?"

"Of course," Zenith replied. "Someone who views fire as warmth and protection may awaken a Will centered around preservation. Their flames might heal, shelter, or strengthen allies rather than consume enemies."

She held out her palm, producing a small, gentle flame that gave off warmth without burning her skin.

"Someone who believes fire represents change might develop flames that transform whatever they touch. Another person might see fire as destruction and awaken flames that exist solely to annihilate."
