Chapter 253. He Wants the Academy to Watch Her Shatter

The morning air didn’t carry the usual crisp promise of dawn; instead, it felt thick, cloying, and charged with an unspoken dread that seemed to seep from the very stones of the academy.

When William stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the main courtyard, the atmosphere hit him like a physical blow.

The academy was alive, but it wasn’t the normal hum of students and morning drills. It was the frantic, controlled panic of an army preparing for an execution.

Below him, the instructors’ men and women, who had stood beside him through countless battles without flinching, were unrecognizable.

Their usual casual camaraderie had been replaced by a brittle, jagged tension. Conversations that would normally carry across the courtyard were now hushed whispers, cut off abruptly like severed nerves whenever William’s shadow crossed their path.

Their eyes darted toward the main gates with a mixture of reverence and naked terror.

The courtyard itself was being transformed. Workers and magical constructs moved with desperate urgency, laying out heavy silk ropes and ceremonial markers with a precision that felt obscene given the circumstances.

They were constructing a formal dueling arena, a stage built not for sport, but for the display of absolute power. The sacred ground was being prepared for a ritual of dominance.

’Something is wrong,’ William thought, his jaw tightening until it ached.

His instincts, honed by years of survival, were screaming at him. This wasn’t a scheduled inspection.

This was an invasion wrapped in ceremony.

"The air tastes like copper," he muttered to himself, the phantom taste of blood from yesterday’s spar still lingering on his tongue.

"That would be the fear."

William didn’t need to turn to recognize Catherine’s voice. She appeared at his side like a specter, her usual poise present but hollow.

Her face was a mask of professional composure, but he could see the minute tremor in her fingers as she clasped them behind her back. Her eyes were fixed on the horizon where the sun was struggling to pierce through a sickly, unnatural haze.

"He’s here already," Catherine said, her voice low and carrying an edge of steel that failed to hide the underlying anxiety. "Lord Valestria..."

"He arrived at dawn, breaching the perimeter before the first bells had even sounded... He came well ahead of any schedule anyone anticipated."

William felt a coldness settle in his gut, a familiar, hollow ache that signaled the approach of true catastrophe. "Dawn? That’s not a visit, Catherine..."

"That’s a statement... He’s not here to observe; he’s here to assert control."

A horn sounded from the main gates, a deep, mournful blast that reverberated through William’s bones. The sound was wrong; it was too heavy, too commanding.

"He’s forcing our hand," William growled, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of Aetherion. "He knows Lia is still recovering from yesterday’s session..."

"He’s counting on her weakness."

"He’s counting on everything," Catherine agreed grimly. "The timing, the ceremony, and the psychological pressure—it’s all designed to break her before she even draws her sword."

"We haven’t had an opportunity to reinforce her conditioning, to give her the mental fortification she needs after what she went through yesterday."

William looked down at the arena being built below the stage where Lia would be forced to stand against a predator who knew no mercy. He could almost see her there, bloodied and exhausted, facing down a storm she wasn’t ready for.

"That doesn’t give us much time to prepare her," William said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

His mind raced through every training exercise, every defensive stance, every lesson he had tried to instill in her, realizing how fragile all of it was against a force like Valestria.

"No," Catherine replied, her gaze meeting his with a terrifying clarity. "It doesn’t..."

"May whatever gods are left have mercy on her, because Valestria certainly won’t."

William and Catherine descended toward the edge of the courtyard, where the oppressive atmosphere seemed to congeal into something physical. Near the perimeter of the makeshift arena, Lia’s training circle had already gathered.

The usual boisterous energy, the teasing, the competitive banter, and the shared laughter had been completely extinguished, replaced by a silence so heavy it felt like it might shatter.

Ellie stood at the center of the group, looking smaller than usual. Her fingers twisted together in a frantic, repetitive motion, knuckles white from the strain.

Her eyes darted incessantly between the approaching William and the ceremonial ropes being strung up in the arena. Every time a hammer struck a stake in the distance, she flinched as if she had been struck herself.

Beside her, Clara was a study in controlled anxiety. Her journal was spread open on her lap, but she wasn’t writing observations about technique or footwork.

Her pen moved in quick, jagged, almost violent strokes, capturing the raw data of the academy’s collapse: the way the instructors refused to meet each other’s eyes, the unnatural pallor of the staff, the way the very sunlight seemed filtered through ash.

Her hands trembled slightly, smearing ink across the parchment.

Then there was Kaela. She wasn’t standing still.

She paced the edge of the field like a caged predator, her boots kicking up small puffs of dust with every aggressive stride. Her jaw was set so hard it looked like it might crack, and her arms were crossed so tightly across her chest that her muscles corded visibly beneath her tunic.

She radiated a volatile, restless energy, the kind of fury that didn’t want to scream but wanted to draw steel and tear throats.

"This is fucking ridiculous," Kaela spat as William approached.

Her voice was low, but it carried a razor-edged venom that cut through the morning haze. "Look at this shit..."

"They’re setting up like it’s some kind of grand tournament... Like some legendary hero is coming to bestow blessings." Her eyes flashed with contempt as she glared at the ceremonial markers. "It’s her own father evaluating whether she deserves to keep training here."

"That shouldn’t require an entire formal arena and a parade of sycophants."

William stopped beside her, his own expression grim. "You’re wrong, Kaela."

Kaela stopped mid-stride, turning to face him with narrowed eyes. "Wrong? How am I wrong?"

"This isn’t an evaluation," William said quietly, his gaze fixed on the arena where the blood would inevitably spill. "An evaluation implies a fair assessment of skill."

"An evaluation implies the possibility of passing."

"This..." he gestured vaguely to the ceremonial opulence surrounding them. "...this is a spectacle."

"This is theater designed to humiliate."

He could feel the weight of it in his own chest, the sickening realization that Lord Valestria wasn’t coming to see if Lia was good enough. He was coming to demonstrate that she was beneath him.

’He’s coming to break her spirit before he even touches her sword,’ William thought bitterly. ’ He wants the academy to watch her shatter. ’

Kaela’s jaw tightened further, a muscle jumping in her cheek. The fury in her eyes didn’t dim; it crystallized.

"Then he’s a coward," she hissed. "Using ceremony to mask cruelty."

She looked toward the training dormitories where Lia was undoubtedly preparing, her voice dropping to a growl that promised violence. "Then I hope Lia makes a bigger one back..."

"I hope she doesn’t just survive... I hope she makes him bleed for every ounce of this bullshit."

The group fell silent again as a distant horn sounded three long, echoing blasts that signaled the arrival of the Valestria procession. The hunt was beginning.
