Chapter 150. That’s Not a Spar Anymore, That’s a Test of Wills
The ground beneath William groaned as he exerted every ounce of his strength to hold back Kaela’s descending inferno. The air screamed with the friction of steel against magical flame.
"NOW, CATHERINE!" William bellowed, his voice cracking under the strain. "She’s off balance push her back!"
"I’ll hold her!"
Catherine didn’t hesitate. She moved like a silver comet.
"On it!" she shouted, her boots pounding against the shattered stone as she sprinted toward the epicenter of the clash.
With a precise, powerful thrust, Catherine drove her shoulder into Kaela’s midsection just as the girl’s overhead strike reached its apex. The collision was brutal.
THUD CRACK.
The impact disrupted Kaela’s center of gravity at the worst possible moment. Instead of breaking William’s guard, Kaela’s blade skidded off his crossed swords with a shower of sparks, SHREEEEEE, and the combined force of Catherine’s shoulder check sent the girl tumbling backward across the training yard like a thrown stone.
"Kaela!" Lia screamed, but there was no concern in her voice, only opportunity.
William’s warning came too late. "Catherine, watch out! She’s--"
But Lia wasn’t attacking Kaela. She was attacking the opening William had just created.
Lia unleashed everything as Catherine turned her attention to ensure Kaela wasn’t seriously injured. She didn’t use water this time; she used the moisture in the very air.
FROOOSH WHIP!
Three razor thin whips of pressurized water materialized from thin air, each one moving faster than the human eye could track. One wrapped around Catherine’s ankle, the other around her sword arm, and the third aimed directly at her throat.
"Too slow, Vice-Headmaster!" Lia’s voice was cold, precise, almost mechanical.
Catherine’s reflexes were legendary, but Lia’s spellwork was prophetic. Catherine twisted her body to avoid the throat strike WHOOSH, but the ankle restraint yanked her off balance.
Her silver armor clanked violently as she stumbled.
"Lia, stop this instant!" Catherine commanded, trying to reassert her authority while simultaneously weaving a defensive mana barrier. "This has gone beyond a spar—"
SPLASH CRACK!
Lia didn’t stop. She slammed both hands toward the ground. "Tide’s Grasp: Iron Pressure!"
The water around Catherine’s legs didn’t just flow; it solidified, becoming as dense and heavy as molten lead. The sudden increase in weight forced Catherine’s knees to buckle with a painful CRUNCH against the gravel.
"Catherine!" William yelled, but he couldn’t abandon Kaela, who was already scrambling back to her feet, eyes bloodshot and feral. "Lia’s targeting your mobility!"
"Don’t let her pin you down!"
Catherine gritted her teeth, feeling the crushing weight of the water magic pressing against her bones.
’Damn it, she’s not playing anymore,’ Catherine thought, her heart hammering against her ribs. ’She’s not just trying to hit me; she’s trying to immobilize me for a killing blow.’
Lia moved closer, her hands weaving intricate patterns. "You taught us that hesitation is death, vice-headmaster..."
"Well, here’s your lesson."
With a sharp flick of her fingers, SNAP, the water tendrils around Catherine’s arms constricted. The pressure was immense, the sound of the water compressing like a tightening vise CREEEEAK.
Catherine’s silver gauntlets began to dent inward under the magical force.
"You’re... impressive, Lia..." Catherine gasped, her breath coming in short, controlled bursts despite the pain. "But you’re... overcommitting!"
Lia’s eyes narrowed. "I’m exactly where I need to be."
She raised her arms high, gathering a massive sphere of water above her head that hummed with lethal energy.
VROOOOOM.
The sphere glowed with a sickly blue light, the air around it freezing instantly into frost. "End this."
"Not yet, you don’t!" William roared.
He threw himself forward, abandoning his defensive posture against Kaela to intercept Lia’s killing blow.
But Kaela, sensing the shift in momentum, didn’t back down. Instead, she used the distraction.
"MY TURN AGAIN!" she screamed, launching herself at William’s exposed back, her flames roaring louder than ever.
The battlefield was now a three-way collision of lethal intent: William trying to intercept Lia, Lia preparing to crush Catherine, and Kaela diving into the chaos to reclaim her vengeance.
The tension was a physical thing, a cord stretched so tight it threatened to snap the very reality of the training yard.
The training yard had ceased to be a school of grounds; it had become a slaughterhouse of magical energy and screaming steel. The three-way collision was inevitable, a cascade of violence that tore through the air with the force of a hurricane.
William sensed Kaela’s approach behind him like a heatwave against his spine. Without turning, he pivoted on his left foot in a brutal, grinding motion that tore his boot through the gravel and threw his sword backward over his shoulder in a desperate arc.
CLANGGG SHHHH!
The steel met Kaela’s flaming blade just inches from his vertebrae. The impact sent a shockwave through William’s entire skeleton, making his teeth rattle in his skull.
"You’re persistent, I’ll give you that," William growled, his voice strained as he used the backswing to shove Kaela’s momentum outward, spinning away from her to create distance. "But persistence without precision is just suicide!"
"Then watch me survive it!" Kaela screamed.
She didn’t retreat. Instead, she used the momentum of William’s shove to barrel toward Catherine, who was still struggling under Lia’s crushing water restraints.
Meanwhile, Catherine’s eyes burned with a cold, silver fury. The pressure on her limbs was excruciating; she could feel the bones in her wrists groaning under the magical vise.
CREEEAK.
But she wasn’t going to die pinned like prey.
"Lia! If you want to see real pressure, witness this!" Catherine roared.
She stopped fighting the water and instead channeled her own mana directly into the restraints. Her silver armor began to glow with an intense, lunar radiance.
VROOOOOM.
"Wind Burst: Shatter Point!"
KRA BOOOOOM!
The water restraints didn’t just break they exploded outward in a thousand pressurized droplets. The force was so sudden that Lia was thrown backward by her own spell’s recoil, her feet skidding across the stone.
Catherine seized the millisecond of freedom, rising from her knees with the grace of a predator. Her sword came up in a defensive ward just as Kaela’s flaming strike descended.
SHHHIIIIING!
The two instructors’ blades met in a deadly X pattern, separating the two students. For three seconds, the world seemed to freeze: William was locked in a brutal power struggle with Kaela’s relentless fire, while Catherine held back Kaela’s secondary lunge while simultaneously preparing to counter Lia’s next move.
"They’ve stopped playing," Olivia whispered from the sidelines, her voice trembling. "Look at their eyes..."
"That’s not a spar anymore... That’s a test of wills!"
Lia was already recovering, her hands moving in hypnotic, deadly circles.
"You think a single burst will save you?" she demanded, her voice cracking with adrenaline. "The tide never stops, Vice-headmaster! It only builds!"
FROOOOOSH!
Lia summoned three massive water pillars from the ground, each one erupting with enough force to crush a carriage. They surged toward Catherine from three different angles simultaneously.
"William, flank her!" Catherine commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos like a blade.
William understood instantly. He abandoned his direct confrontation with Kaela, performing a series of rapid, spinning parries—CLANG, CLANG, CLANGCLANG—that redirected Kaela’s flames into the air, creating a temporary curtain of fire.
He then sprinted sideways, his boots kicking up clouds of dust as he moved to intercept Lia’s water pillars.
"Don’t let her complete the circle!" William yelled.
He swung his blade in a wide, devastating horizontal slash. The steel hummed as it cut through the magical water, splitting one of the pillars in two with a wet, tearing sound.
SPLASH SHHHH.
But Lia was three steps ahead. As William split the first pillar, she collapsed the remaining two into two liquid serpents that twisted around each other, forming a spinning vortex of crushing force aimed directly at William’s legs.
"I’ve got you!" Lia cried.
"Not today, Lia," Catherine countered.
She lunged forward, not at Lia, but at Kaela, who was trying to exploit the distraction. Catherine’s sword moved in a blur of silver light, a series of lightning-fast thrusts that forced Kaela into a desperate retreat.
THUD, THUD, THUD.
The steel struck Kaela’s enchanted bracers with the sound of a hammer on an anvil.
The choreography became a deadly dance of overlapping attacks. William was a whirlwind of steel, cutting through Lia’s water constructs while keeping Kaela’s fire at bay.
Catherine was a silver specter, dancing between Lia’s liquid spears and Kaela’s molten strikes.
The air was thick with the smell of burnt ozone, wet stone, and sweat. Blood trickled from a gash on William’s cheek where a stray spark had grazed him, and Kaela’s breathing was becoming ragged, her movements losing their initial explosive energy but gaining a desperate, lethal edge.
’Their coordination is terrifying. ’Catherine,’ she thought. They aren’t just attacking; they’re trying to trap us in a pincer movement between Lia’s control and Kaela’s destruction.’
’If we don’t break their rhythm now, we’ll be fighting a war of attrition we can’t win.’
"Together, William!" Catherine shouted, her blade glowing brighter than ever.
"On three!" William roared back, his eyes locked on the two girls who were now converging for a final, desperate gambit. "One... Two..."
