Chapter 134. A Perfect Marriage of Precision and Penetrating Force
William turned his full attention back to the nightmare unfolding before them. The creature was no longer merely a monster; it was a convulsing mass of wrongness, its flesh knitting together in ways that defied biology.
He settled into the role he understood best not as the star of this bloody performance, but as the anvil upon which Catherine would forge her victory.
He would be the steady, immovable counterweight that allowed her to unleash her full lethality without fear of being gutted from behind.
The creature’s transformation took a grotesque turn. Two new appendages, longer and more erratic than the original claws, sprouted from its shoulders with the wet, tearing sound of muscle being forced through skin.
They lashed out in a desperate, uncontrolled arc aimed directly at Catherine’s exposed spine while she was locked in combat with its primary limbs.
SHHHH KRACK!
"Not today, you bastard!" William roared.
He shifted instantly into Stone Configuration. His stance widened, his center of gravity dropping until he felt as rooted as the mountains themselves.
His blade met the incoming claws head on. The impact was seismic; the shockwave traveled up his arms, threatening to dislocate his shoulders, but Stone held.
The creature’s claws skidded harmlessly off his enchanted guard with a screech of protesting chitin rather than finding the soft flesh of Catherine’s back.
"Behind you’s covered!" William bellowed, his voice gravelly from exertion. "Don’t stop! Keep pressing!"
Catherine didn’t waste breath on thanks. She couldn’t afford the luxury.
Capitalizing on the opening William’s block had created, she pivoted on her heel, her blades becoming a silver blur. She drove both Wind-Enhanced Swords into the creature’s exposed flank with enough force to shatter granite.
SQUELCH CRUNCH.
The blades sank deep into the corrupted meat, and the creature unleashed a roar so foul it felt like a physical assault on their senses, a sound that combined a human scream with the grinding of tectonic plates.
The beast’s movements became increasingly feral as its own body betrayed it. New plates of armor rippled across its back like waves on a black sea, each new growth accompanied by the sickening pop of bones rearranging themselves.
William sensed the shift in the air before he saw it: a buildup of volatile energy. The creature’s jaw unhinged unnaturally wide, spewing a stream of caustic, dark energy.
"Catherine, move!" William commanded.
He shifted to Wind Configurationwind configuration mid-stride, his movements becoming fluid and explosive. He lunged forward, not to attack, but to intercept.
His blade danced through the air in a series of lightning fast parries, deflecting the deadly bile away from Catherine’s flank. The acidic spray hit his sword with a hiss of Sssssss, sending up plumes of acrid smoke.
They fell into a deadly, unspoken rhythm. Weeks of brutal training sessions had forged something between them that transcended verbal commands: a tactical telepathy.
William read the subtle shift in Catherine’s weight before she even committed to a strike, positioning himself to cover her blind spots; Catherine trusted, with every fiber of her being, that whatever opening he created would hold against the apocalypse itself.
"You’re not even watching me anymore," Catherine observed during a heartbeat of respite, her breathing coming in ragged, desperate gasps as blood dripped from her elbows. "You’re just trusting I’ll be where I need to be."
"I’ve watched you enough these past few weeks to know where that is without looking," William grunted, his eyes never leaving the monster’s shifting form. "Now shut up and kill it."
A faint, fleeting warmth touched Catherine’s expression despite the gore slicked reality of their situation, but it was instantly extinguished as the creature surged forward with renewed, suicidal fury.
The climax came during a moment of terrifying intensity. Catherine ducked low, sliding beneath a wide, bone-crushing sweep of a claw that whistled over her head like a guillotine.
Simultaneously, William drove Aetherion upward in a rising arc, his blade glowing with celestial fury to intercept a second strike aimed directly at Catherine’s skull. The two strikes met in a shower of sparks and black ichor. CLANG SHHHH.
"Now, Catherine! The weakness!" William screamed, his muscles straining against the creature’s overwhelming mass.
Catherine didn’t hesitate. She channeled every remaining ounce of Wind’s explosive momentum into her follow-up.
She spun off the creature’s arm, using the momentum to launch herself upward. Her blades came down in a devastating X pattern, aimed at the center of the creature’s chest where the armor had been weakened by William’s relentless assault.
KRA KOOOOM.
This time, the blades didn’t glance off.
They found purchase. The reinforced chitin split open with the sound of a breaking dam, sending a spray of hot, black viscera across the clearing.
Through the jagged crack in the armor, both of them froze.
Beneath the layers of corrupted flesh and obsidian plating, something was pulsing. It wasn’t the dark, sickly energy they had been fighting.
This was different: a deep, arterial crimson glow that throbbed with a slow, hypnotic rhythm. It looked less like a wound and more like a heartbeat.
The sight of it sent a primal shiver down William’s spine, a warning from his very soul that they had just uncovered something far worse than the monster itself.
"There," William said, his voice dropping to a hushed, urgent whisper as he met Catherine’s bloodshot eyes across the narrow gap between them. "That’s not armor! That’s the core!"
"That’s something else entirely."
"I saw it too," Catherine whispered back, her blades trembling slightly as she stared at the rhythmic, crimson light. "That’s not corruption... that’s the source of its life..."
The creature reacted to its exposed vulnerability like a wounded god. The moment the crimson pulse became visible, a sound erupted from its throat that wasn’t a roar; it was a psychic shriek that tore through the air, vibrating in William and Catherine’s very teeth.
Its body convulsed violently, plates of chitin grinding against one another with the sound of tectonic plates shattering.
It lashed out with a renewed, suicidal frenzy. The claws no longer moved with predatory grace; they swung in wild, desperate arcs that pulverized the ground where they landed.
BOOM.
CRACK.
A massive appendage slammed into a stone pillar behind Catherine, reducing it to powder and sending a cascade of razor sharp debris raining down.
"Fuck!" Catherine hissed, twisting her body mid air to avoid a spray of stone and blood.
She landed hard, skidding through a pool of black ichor that made her boots slip dangerously.
William didn’t hesitate. He threw himself into a defensive roll as a claw whistled inches above his skull.
"It’s panicking!" he shouted, his lungs burning as he fought to maintain his breathing. "It knows we’ve seen it!"
"It’s not panicking, William... it’s protecting something," Catherine said, her voice tight with adrenaline as she regained her footing.
Her eyes were locked on that rhythmic, crimson glow beneath the cracked armor. "Whatever that light is... it’s the reason this thing exists."
"Then we stop playing around," William growled, his knuckles white around the hilt of his blade. "We need to hit it directly."
"Whatever the hell is happening to this thing, that glow is the key to ending this nightmare."
"WAIT!"
The command cut through the chaos like a blade. Albert’s voice roared across the clearing, carrying the absolute authority of a man who had seen too many horrors to be intimidated by them.
He stood amidst the smoking ruins of the academy’s defensive perimeter, one hand raised to steady the incoming reinforcements.
"William! Catherine! Stand down for one second and listen to me carefully!" Albert bellowed.
They froze. The creature lunged at them with a towering wall of teeth and corrupted flesh, but William intercepted it with a desperate Stone barrier, the impact sending a shower of sparks and bone fragments flying.
"We’re listening, Albert!" William screamed over the creature’s guttural snarls. "Talk fast before we’re both fucking dead!"
"This transformation isn’t random!" Albert’s voice came in rapid fire, each word precise and laden with the grim weight of forbidden knowledge. "I’ve seen this before in restricted archives I prayed I’d never have to reference."
"This is a Hollow Circle ritual! These forced mutations carry a core, a life anchor."
Catherine’s eyes widened as she parried a vicious strike that nearly severed her arm. "A Life Anchor? What does that mean for us?"
"It means it’s the source of its power and its single greatest weakness!" Albert shouted back. "The Anchor sits at the geometric center of the body, buried beneath layers of reinforced necrotic tissue."
"The creature’s entire biology is designed to shield that one point at all costs!"
"That’s what we just saw!" Catherine called out, ducking under a lashing tentacle that left a trail of acidic slime in its wake. "The crack we opened... there’s something pulsing beneath it! It’s alive in there, Albert!"
"Then you’ve already found the target!" Albert’s voice rang out with grim satisfaction, though there was no joy in it. "Listen to me: if you can breach that Anchor, the entire transformation will catastrophically collapse!"
"The creature will literally tear itself apart from the inside out."
A pause, heavy with the implications of what he was saying.
"But hear me well," Albert warned, his voice dropping to a deadly serious register. "The Anchor is protected by the highest density of armor the creature can generate."
"A standard strike won’t work... You can’t just hack at it!"
"You need more than power... you need a perfect marriage of precision and penetrating force!"
"If you miss or strike shallow, you’ll only provoke its final, most violent phase."
