Seraphina remained still for a long moment after her exhale, her fingers still curled tightly around the edge of the table. The silence that followed wasn’t the suffocating, grief-laden quiet from before; it was something lighter, almost fragile, like the air after a fever has finally broken.

She looked at William, her eyes searching his face as if trying to find any sign of hesitation, any crack in his resolve. Finding none, she simply closed her eyes again, a small, almost involuntary nod escaping her.

"I..." she started, then stopped. "I don’t even know how to thank you, Instructor Wade."

"Words feel insultingly inadequate for something this... Usually, gratitude in my position comes in the form of political favors, land grants, or military support."

"But none of that matters here... I don’t know how to repay a debt that involves something as precious as her soul."

She let out a self-deprecating laugh, one that sounded foreign to her own ears. "I’m supposed to be the one who handles negotiations, who commands respect, who knows exactly what to say to sway an audience..."

"...And yet, here I am, reduced to this."

William offered a small, reassuring smile. "You don’t owe me anything, Seraphina."

"Consider it a personal investment. I find I have very little patience for systems that break people."

The tension that had been coiled like a spring between them for the last hour didn’t just dissipate; it evaporated. Seraphina leaned back in her chair, the dramatic flair of her noble posture giving way to something almost casual.

A mischievous glint, something almost childlike and utterly unexpected, flickered in her eyes as she studied William’s composed expression.

"Well," she said suddenly, her tone shifting from tragic to dangerously playful. "If you’re going to become her primary confidant, her protector, and should fate be as cruel as it is entertaining, her first boyfriend..."

William froze. The blood seemed to drain from his face as his brain struggled to process the sentence.

"I... beg your pardon...?" he stammered, his usual eloquence failing him completely. "Boyfriend? Seraphina, I think you’ve misread the entire situation."

"I am merely--"

"Oh, don’t get flustered now, Instructor Wade... It doesn’t suit a man of your reputation," she interrupted, a genuine smirk spreading across her lips.

She watched with obvious amusement as he sputtered, the legendary composure of the young prodigy crumbling before her teasing. "But think about it~! If Lia actually falls for someone like you... someone who is perhaps the only person capable of keeping up with her, then I suppose I’ve finally scored a victory."

William blinked rapidly, trying to regain his footing. "A victory? What on earth are you talking about?"

Seraphina leaned forward, propping her chin on her hand, her eyes dancing with amusement. "Lia has spent her entire life losing... Losing to our father’s expectations, losing to the training regimen, and losing to the very concept of being ’enough.’"

"She has never had a win that was truly hers... But if she manages to land a man as stubborn, as infuriatingly competent, and as... well, as you... then she has finally won something significant."

"That’s not... that’s not a victory, that’s a catastrophe for my dignity," William muttered, though the heat in his cheeks betrayed him.

"Is it?" Seraphina laughed, a real, melodic sound that echoed off the stone walls. "Because I have a feeling she’s more dangerous than you give her credit for."

"You think you’re the one guiding her, the one holding the lantern in her darkness?" Her smirk deepened into something more challenging, more knowing. "Be careful, Instructor Wade."

"I’ve seen her fight when she thinks no one is watching... I’ve seen the way her eyes change when she’s cornered."

She paused, letting the implication hang in the air before delivering the killing blow to his ego.

"Don’t be too surprised if you find yourself the one trying to keep up."

"Lia doesn’t just match people, Instructor Wade." Seraphine giggled. "When she decides she wants something or someone, she doesn’t just chase them."

"She overwhelms them... I suspect you might find that she can match you quite comfortably."

William opened his mouth to argue, to cite logic and tactical assessment, but the words died in his throat as he remembered the raw, untapped intensity he had glimpsed in Lia’s eyes earlier.

For the first time, he didn’t feel like the teacher or the protector; he felt like someone who had just walked into a trap he hadn’t even realized was being set.

Seraphina saw the way William flinched, the way his gaze darted toward the ceiling as if seeking divine intervention to rescue him from this conversation. She found it utterly delightful.

For a woman who had spent most of her life surrounded by sycophants who trembled at her shadow, watching this brilliant, composed young man unravel over a simple implication of romance was more entertaining than any banquet.

"Oh, come now, don’t look so horrified," she teased, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper that made William instinctively stiffen. "I’m not suggesting anything scandalous."

"I’m simply stating that beneath all that defensive armor and those sharp edges, Lia has... certain qualities."

"Of course... She has a soft spot." Seraphina smirked. "A vulnerability that she only shows when she truly trusts someone."

"It’s quite beautiful, in its own tragic way."

She paused, her smirk widening into something almost wicked. "And she has other qualities as well... physical ones."

William cleared his throat audibly. "I fail to see how her physical attributes are relevant to our conversation about her emotional well-being, Seraphina."

"Oh, they’re relevant, they’re very relevant," Seraphina said, leaning back with exaggerated nonchalance. "You see, William, we Valestrias are known for our genetic superiority in many fields: swordplay, magical aptitude, and sheer stubbornness."

"But there was one particular area where Lia managed to... surpass me. Quite decisively, in fact."

She let the silence hang, watching William’s growing unease. "Let’s just say that while I inherited our mother’s lean, warrior’s build, Lia inherited a more... generous distribution of assets."

"Her chest, for instance... She has always been quite embarrassingly blessed in that department. It was a point of quiet rivalry between us during our teenage years."

William’s reaction was instantaneous. His entire face flushed a deep crimson, spreading from his neck up to his ears.

He physically recoiled in his chair, his gaze snapping toward the far wall with such force it was as if he were trying to physically escape the conversation.

"That...! That is entirely inappropriate!" he stammered, his voice cracking slightly, betraying his composure. "Seraphina, please!"

"She is... she is far too young to be discussing such things!"

Seraphina burst into laughter, a genuine, unguarded sound that filled the room. "Too young? William, honestly, your moral compass is going to get you in trouble one day."

"This is an academy for young adults, not a convent for children~! Lia is a grown woman already, and she can handle a conversation about her own anatomy without you acting like a startled schoolmaster."

"That’s not the point," William insisted weakly, though his attempt at authority was undermined by the fact that he still refused to meet her eyes. "The point is... decorum... or maybe discretion. The sanctity of—"

"Of what? Your fragile sense of propriety?" Seraphina cut him off, wiping a tear of mirth from her eye. "Relax... I’m teasing you."

"Though I can’t deny it’s true... If you’re going to be spending time with her, you should be prepared."

"She isn’t just a weapon with a sharp mind; she’s a woman with a presence that can be... overwhelming."

She watched him struggle, his jaw working silently as he tried to reassemble his shattered dignity. The image of the stern, unflappable William being dismantled by a few words about sisterly rivalry was a gift she intended to savor.

"Besides," she added, her tone softening just a fraction, though the mischief remained. "If you’re going to be the one helping her find her way, you’d better get used to being flustered."

"If she can make a man of your intellect stutter like a nervous squire just by mentioning her sister, imagine what she’ll do to you when she’s actually trying to impress you."

William finally risked a glance at her, his expression a mixture of exasperation and genuine mortification.

"I think," he said with as much dignity as he could muster while his face was still scarlet, "that I would prefer to discuss tactical formations or political alliances."

"Anything except this."

"Too late," Seraphina purred, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "The dam has broken, Instructor Wade."

"Now we simply see how much more water we can pour in."
