Chapter 228. Trying Not To Make The Massage Weird, But... She Moaned
The minutes that followed felt like hours. William sat on the couch, the oil bottle resting on the coffee table between them like a live grenade.
He tried to focus on the embers in the fireplace and tried to steady his breathing, but every muscle in his body was coiled tight. The silence of the house was no longer comforting; it was heavy, charged with an electricity that made the hair on his arms stand up.
Finally, he stood. His legs felt unnaturally heavy as he made his ascent up the creaking wooden staircase.
When he reached the door to the guest room, he hesitated. His hand hovered inches from the wood. H
His conscience screamed at him to turn around, but his body moved on instinct.
He knocked softly, delivering three precise and gentle raps. "Lia? I have the towels."
"Come in," came her voice.
It was muffled, slightly higher pitched than usual, and carried an edge of vulnerability that made his chest ache.
William pushed the door open just a crack, stopping immediately at the threshold. He kept his gaze fixed resolutely on the floorboards, refusing to let his eyes wander.
His peripheral vision caught only a glimpse of pale skin and the soft glow of the bedside lamp, but he refused to look further. He couldn’t risk seeing more than he was prepared to handle.
"Here," he said, his voice rough.
He extended the folded white towels toward the doorway.
A slender arm reached out from the shadows, fingers brushing against his as she took the fabric. The brief contact felt like a spark jumping between two live wires.
"Thank you," she whispered.
The door clicked shut.
William retreated down the stairs, each step feeling like he was descending into deeper water. By the time he reached the bottom, his mind was a storm.
’What am I doing?’ he thought desperately, pacing the small space between the couch and the window. ’I’m supposed to protect her, not make her feel like she’s being hunted.’
’But when she touched my hand... she didn’t pull away.’
’She wanted me to stay close.’
Meanwhile, behind the closed door of the guest room, Lia stood wrapped in the thick, warm terrycloth. Her heart was hammering so loudly she feared William could hear it through the walls.
Her skin felt hypersensitive, with every nerve ending firing at once. She looked at herself in the mirror, her hair mussed, her cheeks flushed, her eyes wide and dark with a fear she couldn’t quite name.
’This is madness,’ Lia thought, clutching the towel tighter against her chest. ’This is completely against everything I am.’
’And yet... I’ve never felt more alive.’
’I’ve never felt so... seen... Even without him looking at me, I can feel his presence downstairs.’
’It’s like he’s everywhere.’
When she finally descended the stairs, the atmosphere in the parlor had shifted from tense to suffocating. The air felt thick, almost viscous, as if the oxygen itself had been replaced by something heavier.
William was standing by the fireplace, his back to her. When she entered the room, he turned slowly.
The sight of her wrapped in the oversized towel that clung to her curves, her damp hair falling over one shoulder, made his breath catch audibly.
Neither spoke. The silence wasn’t empty; it was full of everything they weren’t saying.
’God, she’s beautiful,’ William thought, his gaze dropping to the collarbone visible above the towel before he forcibly jerked his eyes back to hers. ’I need to focus...’
’I need to be the professional she needs right now, or I’m going to lose control.’
Lia stared at him, her lips parted slightly. She noticed the way his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard, the way his broad shoulders seemed to strain against his shirt.
’He’s terrified too,’ she realized with a sudden, startling clarity. ’He’s not looking at me as if I’m prey.’
’He’s looking at me like I’m something precious... something fragile.’
The awkwardness was physical, a tangible barrier between them that made every movement feel exaggerated and clumsy. Lia shifted her weight, the towel slipping a fraction of an inch, and both of them flinched.
William knew he had to break the spell before the tension snapped them both. He couldn’t maintain this standoff; it was eating him alive.
He forced his hands to relax at his sides, though they still trembled slightly.
"Lia," he said, his voice cracking slightly before he steadied it. "Let’s... let’s get this started before we both lose our minds."
He cleared his throat again, trying to reclaim some semblance of the composed warrior she knew. "The bed is more comfortable than the couch for this. Go ahead and... lie face down on the bed."
"I’ll prepare the oil."
He turned toward the table, deliberately giving her his back, his heart racing as he heard the soft rustle of her movement toward the bedroom. The game had changed; the rules of their world had been rewritten in the quiet of Catherine’s house.
...
William entered the bedroom with measured steps, carrying the dark glass bottle like it was a sacred relic. The room was bathed in the soft, amber glow of the bedside lamp, creating an atmosphere that felt detached from the rest of the world.
Lia was already positioned on the bed, lying face down, wrapped in the white towel. Her back was a pale expanse in the lamplight, the muscles along her spine visible even through the fabric.
"I’m going to start with the shoulders first," William said quietly, his voice deliberately low and steady.
He needed to project calm, even as his own pulse thundered in his ears. "I’ll work through the towel first to get the muscles warmed up, then I’ll use the oil."
He sat on the edge of the mattress, the weight of his body causing the bed to dip slightly. He could see the way her shoulders tensed at the movement.
"Tell me if I press too hard, Lia... And tell me exactly where the tension is worst."
"I... I think it’s right between the shoulder blades," she murmured into the pillow, her voice muffled and thick with emotion. "And down along the left side of my spine."
William poured a small amount of the lavender oil into his palms, rubbing them together to warm the liquid. The scent filled the space between them: sweet, earthy, and intoxicating.
When he finally placed his hands on her shoulders over the towel, he felt her entire body shudder beneath his touch.
"Just breathe," he whispered, more to himself than to her. "Just breathe through it."
He began with slow, deliberate circles, using the heels of his hands to knead the tight muscles. He could feel the knots beneath her skin, hard as river stones.
As he worked, he reached down, gently taking her right arm and stretching it above her head, then doing the same with the left. The movement exposed more of her back, the skin gleaming faintly in the lamplight.
"Does this feel alright?" he asked, his thumbs finding a particularly stubborn spot near her scapula. "Is this the area?"
"Yes..." Lia gasped, the word catching in her throat. "Right there... Don’t... don’t stop."
William focused entirely on the task, channeling all his nervous energy into the precision of his movements. He worked methodically, moving from her shoulders down to the small of her back.
But as the heat from his hands began to seep through the barrier of the towel, the professional distance he was trying so hard to maintain began to crumble.
The silence of the room was broken not by conversation, but by something far more dangerous.
A soft, involuntary sound escaped Lia’s lips, a low, melodic moan that seemed to vibrate through the mattress and directly into William’s bones.
He froze mid-stroke. His heart gave a violent lurch. "L-Lia...?"
"I’m sorry," she whispered, her voice breathy and strained. "It’s just... it feels... ahn..."
Another sound, softer this time, almost like a whimper of pleasure, escaped her as he inadvertently pressed deeper into a sore muscle.
William’s hands trembled. The sound was disarming.
It stripped away the last of his defenses, reminding him that beneath the noble title and the disciplined exterior, there was a woman who was reacting to him, to his touch, to his presence, to the intimacy of this moment.
The air in the room suddenly felt impossibly hot. William could smell the lavender, the sandalwood, and the faint, clean scent of her skin.
His mind screamed at him to stop, to retreat, to reestablish the boundaries. But his hands, seemingly possessed by a will of their own, moved back to her skin.
"I’m going to remove the towel now," he said, his voice dropping to a husky register he didn’t recognize. "To use the oil directly... I need to get to the muscles properly."
"Please," she breathed, the word carrying a plea that wasn’t just about the massage.
With careful, reverent movements, he peeled back the towel. When her bare skin finally met the oil on his palms, the contact felt electric.
The slide of his hands over her smooth, warm flesh was something he had imagined countless times, but the reality was overwhelming. Every moan she made as he worked became a provocation, a tiny earthquake that threatened to level his self-control.
"Tell me where it hurts, Lia," he commanded softly, though his own breathing had become as ragged as hers. "I need to know where to focus."
"Here," she gasped as his thumbs traced the furrow of her spine. "And there... oh gods, Instructor Wade... there."
