Chapter 121. A Walking Textbook With a Death Wish
William shifted again, the Ash stance settling briefly into his footwork. He committed every ounce of his weight to a devastating forward lunge, his shoulder dipping as if he intended to drive through the masked man’s chest like a battering ram.
The feint was flawless; it sold itself through pure, convincing momentum. But as the masked man braced for the impact, William snapped his hips backward with the explosive grace of a predator, reversing his entire trajectory mid-stride.
Using Wind’s principles of redirection, he pirouetted on the ball of his foot, spinning past the masked man’s guard from an angle that should have been physically impossible after such a committed charge.
The masked man’s block came a fraction of a second too late, a fatal hesitation. Aetherion’s edge caught along his left forearm in a shallow, glancing cut.
SHHHIIIIING SPLAT.
"Tch—" The masked man hissed through clenched teeth as blood welled up from the furrow in his flesh.
"You’re better than I accounted for," the masked man admitted, his voice strained with irritation beneath a thin veneer of approval. "I confess, this is not the outcome I anticipated when I calculated the variables surrounding tonight."
William didn’t stop to savor the compliment.
He drove his boot into the mud, sending a spray of filth toward his opponent, and roared, "Then your calculations suck as bad as your technique."
William exploded forward again. This time, there was no finesse, only raw, unadulterated violence.
He opened with a brutal Ember overhead strike that came down like a guillotine.
BOOM.
The masked man raised his sword to parry, but William didn’t retreat when the blades locked. Instead, he leaned his full body weight into the hilt, grinding his steel against the opponent’s, the screeching sound of metal on metal piercing the air like a dying scream.
SKREEEEEEEEEEE!
"What’s the matter?" William taunted, his face inches from the porcelain mask, his breath hot and metallic with blood. "Too many variables?"
"Did your precious little equations fail to account for the fact that you’re fighting a man who has nothing left to lose?"
The masked man snarled and shoved William back with a powerful kick to the sternum.
THUD.
William staggered, the air leaving his lungs in a painful wheeze, but before he could collapse, he spun Aetherion into a defensive whirl. The masked man seized the opening, unleashing a vicious three-strike combo: Slash, Thrust, and Cleave.
William parried the first two with desperate, clashing strokes—CLANG! CLANG!—but the third strike caught him across the thigh. The blade bit deep, tearing through denim and muscle, leaving a gaping crimson wound that burned like liquid fire.
’GASP!’ William’s inner voice screamed as the pain flooded his nervous system. ’Move...’
’Don’t think about the leg...’
’Think about the blade...’
’Think about the throat...’
"You fight like a man who’s read too many books and never bled enough," William spat, blood trickling from his nose as he forced himself to advance despite the weakness spreading through his leg. "You’re all theory and no soul."
"A walking textbook with a death wish."
Enraged, the masked man swung wildly, a desperate arc aimed at William’s skull. William ducked, the wind of the blade whistling over his hair. In one fluid motion, he activated the mechanism.
CLICK CLACK SHINK.
Double Wield.
William became a hurricane of steel. He drove one blade into the masked man’s shoulder, SQUELCH, and immediately twisted, using the blade as a lever to pull the opponent off balance while his second blade swept upward in a vicious gut cut.
"Arghh!" The masked man recoiled, clutching his shoulder as blood soaked through his gloves. "You... you insufferable animal!"
"Animal?" William laughed, a harsh, broken sound that ended in a cough of blood. "No. An animal has instincts..."
"But you just have arrogance... You think because you can predict a pattern, you can predict a man who refuses to follow one."
William pivoted, switching back to single-weapon with a metallic CLACK, using the heavier weight of the combined blade to deliver a punishing horizontal slash that caught the masked man across the ribs.
CRACK.
The sound of cartilage snapping echoed across the clearing.
"That sound?" William asked, stepping into the man’s personal space as the opponent stumbled back, clutching his side. "That was your precious calculations breaking."
"How does it feel to realize you’re not the smartest person in the room? You’re just the one about to die."
The masked man stumbled back, his breath coming in ragged, wet gasps that fogged the inside of his porcelain visor. The rib injury was severe; every movement was a fresh torment, each inhale sending electricity through his shattered cartilage.
But William Wade was not giving him the mercy of a pause.
William charged, and this time, he wasn’t just fighting; he was orchestrating a symphony of carnage.
The mechanism of Aetherion screamed as it split CLICK CLACK SHINK and William entered the fray in Double Wield mode. He opened with Ember, the aggressive, crushing pressure of a wildfire.
He drove both blades downward in parallel arcs, each strike carrying the momentum of his entire body. The masked man raised his sword to block, but the sheer force was overwhelming.
BOOM! CLANG!
The impact sent vibrations up the man’s arms that felt like they would shatter his elbows.
"Too slow!" William roared. Before the masked man could push back, William twisted his wrists, the blades spinning in his grip as he transitioned into Wind.
The crushing pressure vanished instantly, replaced by a terrifying fluidity. William didn’t push away; he flowed around the blocked blades like a hurricane.
He pirouetted on one foot, the dual blades becoming twin streaks of silver that danced in erratic, unpredictable patterns.
Swish swish swish!
The masked man swung wildly to catch him, but William was already gone, reappearing at his flank with a vicious horizontal slash that opened a new crimson line across the man’s thigh.
SHHHHIIIIING SPLAT.
"What is this?!" the masked man screamed, spinning to face the threat. "You’re mixing forms without any magical stabilization!"
"Your muscles should be tearing themselves apart!"
"Then watch them tear!" William taunted.
His inner monologue was a single, repetitive command: ’Strike. Break. Kill. Strike. Break. Kill.’
The pain in William’s own leg was a distant hum compared to the white-hot fury in his chest. He saw the opening; the masked man’s guard was sagging from exhaustion.
William slammed into him using Tide.
This was the most dangerous transition. He moved with a relentless, rolling momentum, each strike flowing into the next without any pause in motion.
He swung one blade in a wide, sweeping arc that forced the masked man to duck, then immediately channeled that circular energy into a rising thrust with the second blade.
WHOOSH THWACK.
The tip of Aetherion grazed the masked man’s sternum, drawing blood through the gaps in his armor. The masked man retaliated with a desperate, guttural scream, driving his elbow into William’s face.
CRUNCH.
William’s nose shattered again, blood spraying across the dirt, but he didn’t flinch. Instead, he used the contact to close the distance even further.
He grabbed the masked man’s sword arm with his free hand, pulling the opponent off balance while his dual blades worked like pistons.
Sta b. Slash. Thrust. Parry.
CLANG. SHINK. CLANG. SHINK.
The sound of the fight became a chaotic percussion of violence. William was a blur of shifting stances: Ember to break the guard, Wind to bypass the counter, and Tide to overwhelm the recovery.
He was attacking from three different tactical philosophies simultaneously, all while maintaining the impossible coordination required for dual wielding.
"You’re... you’re cheating fate itself," the masked man wheezed, blood dripping from his lips. "No human can maintain this level of stance switching... the cognitive load alone should have killed you!"
"Then consider me a goddamn anomaly," William spat, blood painting his teeth crimson. "You’re so busy trying to understand my mechanics that you’ve forgotten how to survive them."
William drove both blades into the masked man’s guard in a powerful X-shaped bind, forcing their weapons together.
KCHINK.
The pressure was immense. William leaned in close, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, predatory light.
"Let me educate you on one last variable," William whispered, his voice dripping with venom as he began to twist Aetherion’s blades, grinding them against the opponent’s steel until sparks showered their faces like dying stars. "The variable where you realize you’re not the hunter..."
"You’re just the meat."
