Chapter 117. One More Pulse (Ellie’s Whole World Narrows to a Single Countdown)

The battlefield had transformed into a charnel house of grinding bone and wet tearing sounds. The air itself felt heavy, saturated with the copper reek of arterial spray and the acrid stench of monster ichor.

The second wave of the swarm didn’t just attack; they flooded the battlefield like a living tide of teeth and claws, pouring through the fissures in the earth with a coordinated, insectoid intelligence.

Kaela gritted her teeth as a Ravager’s claw found a weakness in her defense. The serrated limb scraped across her shoulder armor with a screeching metal sound before finding purchase in flesh.

"Nngh—!" she gasped, the pain searing through her nerves like molten lead.

Blood immediately began to soak through her padded gambeson, warm and sticky.

Before the creature could twist its claw to tear deeper, Lia’s blade flashed through the air.

SHINK.

The steel severed the creature’s arm at the elbow, sending a spray of black fluid across Lia’s face.

"You okay? Don’t you dare drop your guard now!" Lia shouted over the cacophony of screams and clashing steel.

Her voice was strained, her own lungs burning from the exertion.

"I’m fine! Barely felt it, just a scratch... scratch-fuck!" Kaela hissed through clenched teeth, forcing herself to reset her stance.

The pain was sharp, but adrenaline was a powerful anesthetic. "Keep moving! Don’t give them an inch!"

On the opposite flank, the ground itself seemed to tremble. Clara’s voice rang out above the din, sharp as a whip. "Ellie! They’re flanking from the east!"

"I need another burst! Coordinates 0 4 7, but widen the radius! Now!"

Ellie, pale and sweat-slicked, planted her feet into the blood-soaked mud. Her hands trembled, but her eyes burned with a desperate fury.

"Widening the field! Hold them off for five more seconds!" She closed her eyes, channeling every remaining drop of mana she possessed. "Holy Radiance: Expansive Pulse!"

A sphere of brilliant, rose gold energy erupted from her palms. Unlike the previous bursts, this one wasn’t a pinpoint strike; it was a rolling wave of pure force.

As the pulse expanded, it slammed into a cluster of Ravagers. The impact didn’t just push them; it shattered them.

The sound of chitinous exoskeletons cracking under the magical pressure sounded like a volley of gunfire.

CRACK CRACK CRACK.

The creatures were thrown backward like ragdolls, their bodies tumbling through the mud.

"That’s it! Push them back!" Clara screamed, leading the counter-charge.

But the victory was brief. The swarm was relentless.

"Don’t get cocky, Ellie!" Clara’s warning came just as a shadow loomed over them. "Six o’clock! Closing fast!"

A massive Ravager, larger than its brethren, tore through the line of defense. Its mandibles snapped with a wet CLACK that sounded like breaking timber.

It lunged at Clara, its claws dripping with fresh gore. Clara swung her sword in a desperate arc, but the creature’s sheer mass forced her backward.

THUD.

The creature’s weight slammed into Clara’s shield, sending vibrations up her arms that made her teeth rattle.

"Dammit," Clara growled, her boots sliding through the blood-slicked earth. "It’s too heavy!"

"Clara, move!" Kaela screamed, lunging forward to assist, but she was intercepted by two smaller scavengers that tore at her legs.

In the chaos, Olivia appeared like a ghost born from the blood mist. She didn’t scream; she didn’t warn.

She simply emerged from the shadows behind the larger Ravager. Her blade dived in like a hawk’s beak.

SQUELCH.

The steel pierced the creature’s neck vertebrae with a sickeningly wet sound.

’I need to end this quickly,’ Olivia thought bitterly, her jaw set tight as she twisted the blade to finish the kill. ’One more wave and we’re all dead...!’

The air was filled with the sounds of the desperate struggle: the wet tearing of flesh, the metallic clang of steel on chitin, and the ragged breathing of survivors clinging to life.

Every second felt like an eternity, every breath a battle against the suffocating stench of death that hung over the battlefield.

The larger Ravager convulsed as Olivia’s blade twisted in its spinal column, black ichor geysering from the wound and painting Olivia’s pale cheek in arterial spray.

With a guttural grunt of effort, Olivia planted a boot against the beast’s ribs, feeling the chitinous plates buckle and crack under her weight, and wrenched her dagger free. The massive creature collapsed with a thunderous THUD, its legs twitching uselessly in the crimson mud.

"Don’t just stand there gawking at the corpse!" Olivia snapped, her voice cutting through the ringing in their ears like a guillotine. "The breach is widening!"

She was right. The death of the alpha had only served to agitate the rest of the swarm.

A fresh torrent of scavengers poured through the gap, their clicking mandibles creating a nauseating, rhythmic static.

Clara was already back on her feet, her breathing coming in ragged, wet gasps. "Kaela! Lia! Tighten the circle around Ellie!"

"She’s our only lifeline if they break through again!"

Kaela roared in agreement, though her voice cracked with exhaustion. "You heard her! Form up!"

She lunged forward, her sword whistling through the air in a brutal overhead cleave.

WHACK.

The blade split the skull of an advancing scavenger, sending brain matter and black fluid spraying across her armor. "Come on, you pieces of shit!"

"Is that all you’ve got?!" She was fighting with a berserker’s desperation now, each swing fueled by the searing pain in her wounded shoulder.

Lia moved in perfect synchronization with Kaela, her sword working like a surgeon’s scalpel.

Flick flick stabs.

She parried a clawed limb with a shower of sparks CLANG and immediately riposted, driving her point through the soft underbelly of a creature. "Kaela, watch your left! Three of them!"

"I got it!" Kaela yelled, spinning to meet the threat, her blade grinding against a scavenger’s carapace with a shower of sparks that lit up their blood slicked faces.

In the center of the deadly formation, Ellie sat cross-legged, her hands pressed against the earth. Her face was ghostly pale, sweat dripping from her chin as she focused every ounce of her remaining consciousness.

"I can feel them..." she whispered, her inner monologue racing. ’I can feel their malice, their hunger...’

’It’s like a cold tide pressing against my mind...’

’Stay focused, Ellie. Don’t let the fear drown you. Just... one... more... pulse.’

"Ellie, focus!" Clara shouted, stepping in front of the girl, her sword blocking a desperate lunge from a scavenger.

The impact sent a bone-jarring shockwave through Clara’s arms. "I’ll hold them! Just give us what we need!"

"I’m trying, Clara! I’m trying!" Ellie cried out. Her eyes suddenly flared with a dimming rose light. "Aura Shield: Bastion Formation!"

A translucent pink barrier erupted around the group. A scavenger threw itself at the shield, its claws scraping against the magical surface with a sound like nails on a chalkboard, SKREEEEE, before being repelled by a concussive burst of energy.

Olivia, meanwhile, had become a whirlwind of silent execution. She didn’t waste movement.

She moved between the gaps in the defenders’ guard, a shadow that appeared only to deliver death. A scavenger tried to leap over Lia’s shoulder; Olivia appeared mid air, her blade slicing through its midsection with a wet SHLICE, bisecting the creature before it could even scream.

She landed silently, immediately spinning to drive her elbow into the throat of another attacker.

CRUNCH.

"Three o’clock, Lia! Low strike!" Olivia commanded without breaking her lethal rhythm.

Lia dropped to one knee, sweeping her blade across the ground.

SWISH.

The blade severed the tendons of two approaching beasts, sending them crashing to the ground in agony. "Got them!"

"Fuck!" Kaela screamed as a scavenger managed to sink its teeth into her thigh through a gap in her armor. "Get off me, you bastard!"

She grabbed the creature’s head with one hand and slammed it face-first into a stone outcrop.

CRACK.

The skull shattered like an eggshell, spraying gore across the battlefield.

The tension was suffocating. Every breath felt like inhaling blood.

The sounds—the wet squelching of dismemberment, the metallic shriek of blades, and the inhuman clicking of the swarm—blended into a single, terrifying crescendo of violence.

"They’re not stopping!" Lia yelled, her voice cracking. "There are too many of them!"

"Then we kill more of them until there’s nothing left to fight!" Clara roared, her eyes blazing with a defiant, murderous light. "Formation Delta!"

"Push forward! Drive them back into the dark!"
