Chapter 63: He Can’t Say It
Su Zhaozhao was stunned when she heard what Xie Huaizheng said.
She couldn’t help but look Xie Huaizheng over a few times.
’Xie Huaizheng... he doesn’t have a fever, does he?’
’Why would he suddenly say something like that? Is this really him?’
"What’s wrong with you? Suddenly spouting such nonsense."
Su Zhaozhao had, in fact, come here to marry him.
But for him to blurt out something like that, at a time like this, wasn’t it just bizarre?
She could also sense that something was off about Xie Huaizheng’s state.
It was a suppressed, somber feeling, like he was trapped in darkness.
She had an exceptionally sharp sensitivity to people’s emotions.
Xie Huaizheng was acting very strangely now.
Su Zhaozhao’s hand took hold of Xie Huaizheng’s.
The man’s hand was so large, with long, well-defined fingers, that she needed both of her hands to hold it firmly.
At that moment, it wasn’t about a man and a woman; she just wanted to comfort him this way.
Su Zhaozhao held onto his hand, staring into his eyes. "When I was treating Jiang Shulan just now, did it drag you back into some painful memory you’d rather not revisit?"
Xie Huaizheng’s pupils trembled. He hadn’t expected Su Zhaozhao to guess.
Just now, he had been lost in that nightmare. He felt that if only someone like Su Zhaozhao had been there to pull him out back then, things would have been better.
That’s why those words had slipped out uncontrollably just now.
He had come to his senses now, but he still didn’t think it was a bad decision.
His thin lips curved into a smile. "No. I just thought that since you came here to marry me, there’s nothing wrong with us getting married."
For some reason, he hadn’t spoken about those things back then, and now, Xie Huaizheng felt he was completely unable to bring them up.
Even though he knew Su Zhaozhao could help him, he couldn’t bring himself to speak.
But he figured, since Su Zhaozhao wanted to get married, and he now had the same thought...
’Maybe I can give it a try. Marrying a girl like this, life wouldn’t be too boring.’
Of course, he knew he was being selfish. For so many years, he had still found himself returning to that darkness from time to time.
’Could she be the one to redeem him from that darkness?’
"No way, Xie Huaizheng. I won’t just marry you casually."
The girl’s soft, sweet voice rang out, interrupting Xie Huaizheng’s thoughts.
Before Xie Huaizheng could say anything, Su Zhaozhao continued, "I won’t marry someone who isn’t honest with me."
Although she didn’t know why Xie Huaizheng had suddenly proposed marrying her, she knew it was on impulse.
’Who knows what he’s really thinking? This whole thing feels so strange!’
He had been so resistant before, and now he was bringing up marriage so casually. It just felt very strange to her.
But in truth, she wanted to help him too.
She knew he was hiding things in his heart, but since he was unwilling to talk about them, she couldn’t help him.
She could only use this opportunity to push him a little.
Xie Huaizheng pulled his hand from Su Zhaozhao’s grasp and looked down at her.
The girl was also looking up at him, her face full of seriousness.
Their eyes met. After a long moment, Xie Huaizheng finally said, "I can’t say."
Su Zhaozhao paused.
"Sorry," Xie Huaizheng said before turning to leave.
This was the first time Xie Huaizheng had ever apologized, but Su Zhaozhao didn’t feel particularly happy about it.
Su Zhaozhao watched Xie Huaizheng’s back. He was still tall and imposing, like a mountain.
But in that moment, Su Zhaozhao saw his vulnerability.
She bit her lip.
’How strange. It’s clear something happened in Xie Huaizheng’s past that caused him immense trauma.’
’But the original book never mentioned this at all!’
’Could it be that Xie Huaizheng had already healed himself before the female lead appeared, so it was never mentioned?’
’That’s impossible!’
’Characters in a novel all serve the plot, just like her, a supporting character.’
’For any part of the story she isn’t involved in, she’s a complete blank. Even though she inherited the original owner’s memories, she has no recollection of the original owner’s childhood or later experiences, as long as they weren’t related to the main characters.’
’The memories she possesses are all things mentioned in the novel’s plot.’
’As the male lead, he’s probably even more defined by the plot.’
Su Zhaozhao’s head started to ache. ’Could it be that because I transmigrated into the book, the characters in the story are changing too?’
’The male lead has become different?’
The thought gave Su Zhaozhao a major headache.
’So, my transmigration has been a total disaster. Why is the plot completely different from the original?’
’Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had to ask Xie Huaizheng directly.’
"Zhaozhao, so you’re here. What’s wrong? Is Jiang Shulan’s condition not good?" Lin Shumo’s voice sounded, interrupting Su Zhaozhao’s thoughts.
Su Zhaozhao looked at Lin Shumo’s handsome and refined face.
She couldn’t help but ask him, "Do you have a childhood sweetheart? You were very close, and when you were a kid, you almost drowned in a river, and she was the one who saved you."
This was a plot point between the second male lead and the female lead.
The reason Lin Shumo had always silently protected the female lead was because she had saved him when they were children.
And as he protected her, he gradually fell in love with her and decided to remain single for the rest of his life for her sake.
Lin Shumo froze. Then, his eyes widened. "How did you know that?"
"It’s nothing, I just heard it from someone," Su Zhaozhao explained, then smoothly changed the subject. "Oh, right, did you need me for something?"
"Oh, our work is about to start. I didn’t see you, so I came over to check."
Su Zhaozhao glanced at the clock on the wall. She had been delayed here for quite a while.
"Okay, let’s go."
Su Zhaozhao suppressed the doubts in her heart. ’If Xie Huaizheng has changed, shouldn’t Lin Shumo have changed too?’
But he hadn’t.
She knew Lin Shumo’s plotline, but not Xie Huaizheng’s.
If Xie Huaizheng wouldn’t talk, she had no idea how to help treat him.
No matter how skilled she was, she didn’t have a Mind Reading Technique. Besides, someone like Xie Huaizheng was cunning as hell—he could see through others, but no one could see what was in his heart.
Su Zhaozhao was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice the confused look in Lin Shumo’s eyes behind her.
’Who told Su Zhaozhao about his past? He had never mentioned it to anyone else.’
For the rest of the afternoon, Su Zhaozhao and Lin Shumo conducted psychotherapy sessions for patients together.
Just yesterday, Lin Shumo had wanted to be Su Zhaozhao’s partner.
But now, he had become a student.
When Su Zhaozhao spoke, he would even take out a notebook and diligently take notes.
After they finished, Lin Shumo even asked Su Zhaozhao about some things that confused him.
Su Zhaozhao answered all his questions.
Her professionalism, composure, and the depth of her knowledge in psychology left Lin Shumo utterly astonished.
He never imagined that Su Zhaozhao was this incredible...
’Just how much has she taught herself?’
He even felt that she could be a lecturer at a university.
But she had only graduated from middle school. He considered himself smart, but Su Zhaozhao was even smarter than him.
"Zhaozhao, why don’t you try to get into a university? I think you’d pass the college entrance exam with ease," Lin Shumo suggested.
