Chapter 238: Bathing Together with the Capybara
"Waaah!"
Lucia threw her arms around the capybara’s waist and began rubbing her cheek against it.
The capybara flinched and took two or three hasty steps forward.
Even while being dragged, Lucia was mewling.
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru."
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru-ru?"
The capybara stopped, curved its neck, and looked back at Lucia on its waist.
"Kyu-ruru-ru."
"Kyu-ruru-ru."
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru. Kyu-ruru-ru..."
"Kyu-ruru-ru..."
Lucia’s meowing was so perfect that I couldn’t tell which one was the real capybara’s sound...
Yet the panicking capybara gradually grew calmer.
It seemed they were actually communicating. Well, since she was a god, communication with a capybara was probably possible.
The capybara seemed to have understood that Lucia meant no harm and sat down with its legs folded.
After Lucia stroked its back, the capybara rolled over.
It didn’t look like it had ever been kept in a zoo, and even for a wild capybara it was letting its guard down far too quickly. What kind of persuasion had Lucia used?
I squatted in front of Lucia, sandwiched the capybara between us, and we all stroked its back and belly together.
Kaka and Pipi came over too, and the three of us pampered the capybara like crazy.
This child had probably been reincarnated from somewhere in South America—Argentina or Brazil or wherever.
When we had gone to Earth before, we learned that wild capybaras sometimes got hit by cars and died after humans developed the land. Lucia had negotiated with the god who ruled over reincarnation, and made the truck-killed capybara reincarnate on this planet.
Poor thing. Did it suffer any fear or pain?
"Adorable."
"Ahh, it’s adorable."
"Adorable, right?"
"Adorable, Pipi!"
Nadenade. The fur was hard despite its cute appearance. It had become dense and water-repellent so it could dive underwater.
Puny-puny. The pads on its feet were heart-shaped. The front paws had four fingers, the hind paws had three—different numbers front and back. It even had webbed feet to swim.
"Lucia. Because capybaras are weak to cold and dryness, let’s put it in the hot spring."
"Unn!"
Kapi!
We used Lucia’s warp ability and instantly moved to the open-air bath.
The sudden change of scenery surprised the capybara. It shook its head once, then froze in place.
"Kyu-ruru-ru."
Lucia transformed into the capybara and stepped into the open-air bath as an example.
Lucia only stuck her face out above the water and mewled "kyu-ruru."
The real capybara slowly approached the bath and licked the water once.
Pero-pero.
Was it thirsty? Or was it checking safety? The capybara was actually drinking the hot water.
Was it going to enter?
It slowly dipped its front paws into the water...
It entered!
The capybara had entered the hot spring!
With its front paws and chest submerged, the capybara froze again.
It must have been confused by the hot water.
Wild capybaras live in warm regions, so they swim in ponds and rivers but never soak in hot spring water.
Was it puzzled by the warm water?
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru."
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru."
The capybara slowly advanced and finally lined up beside Lucia.
I shouted as if I were watching a girl with crippled legs suddenly stand up after recuperating in the Swiss mountains.
"It entered! The capybara entered the hot spring!"
I stripped off my long robe and arm covers.
"Uwaaaah! Lucia! I’m getting in too!"
I didn’t even know why my tension was this high. I didn’t know.
If a capybara and a real one mixed in a zoo in the real world, they’d be scolded, but there was no one here to stop us. If that’s the case, then we had no choice but to get in!
I stepped into the hot spring and sandwiched the capybara between Lucia and me.
"Capybara-sama. My name is Ooi Masaharu."
Of course I couldn’t call it "-san." Calling it "-san" would make it a completely different entity.
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru."
"Kyu-ruru-ru-ru."
"Kaka, want to get in?"
"Pipi wants to get in, deshu!"
The two stuffed animals entered the hot spring too.
"You guys! If you suck up the water you’ll turn into a goopy mess and be unable to move for a while...!"
"Newcomer welcome party, capybara?"
"Mixed bathing with the naked!"
"I see. Here—grab this!"
I bent my knees so that Kaka and Pipi would be only half-submerged.
Hafuu... Warm.
Real-cap ybara mixed bathing... this is addictive...
The capybara’s head had a structure that let it escape into a river if attacked by a ferocious beast. In other words, when viewed from the side, its eyes, nose, and ears were lined up in a straight line.
That way it could breathe while keeping its face above water and use its eyes and ears to watch for attackers. Even with such a splendid body, the capybara was a relaxed creature that would willingly approach its natural enemies like jaguars or crocodiles.
The two capybaras floated in the bath with only their heads poking out.
It’s cute. The nose twitched regularly.
I wanted to squeeze between the two, but Lucia probably wanted to stick to the capybara-sama too. I didn’t want to separate them. Maybe another chance.
Oh. The capybara girls appeared on the hill in front.
They had interrupted their work making dried fish and had returned for lunch break.
Kuku kuku. Those idiots would be shocked when they saw capybara-sama...
The capybara girls were slowly approaching. Because they were short, the bath would probably be hidden from their view.
Kemolori was leading the way, wobbling on her short legs.
"...Fah!"
Finally sensing the scent, Kemolori stopped ten steps away from the bath.
Two of them were a little late, but the capybara girls all stopped at once.
Kemolori approached alone, sniffing with her nose twitching.
With her short legs she climbed the stone steps and finally saw the bath.
"Fah!"
"Fah!"
When Kemolori cried out in surprise, the capybara did the same.
"What is this?! This child! Waaah!"
Kemolori leaped onto the capybara. The capybara sank for a moment, thrashed underwater, then surfaced a little apart. It seemed startled by the sudden attack, but quickly calmed down.
It must have judged the animal with a similar appearance to itself as not an enemy.
Kemolori leaped at the capybara again.
She wasn’t attacking a newcomer; this was just affectionate expression, right?
Splash splash. Water sprayed everywhere.
"Who are you, this child!"
"I don’t have a name yet, but this is the real capybara-sama."
"Fah! It’s me, Kemolori!"
Kemolori puffed out her cheeks and introduced herself to the capybara.
It was amazing. Kemolori could actually tell the difference between the real capybara (a capybara) and Lucia’s (a capybara girl). Both were soaking in the water with wet fur, yet she could tell them apart.
The other capybara girls slowly approached, watching, and when they realized the capybara’s presence they jumped in with "Fah!" of surprise.
Of course not everyone could fit, and I was big anyway, so I should go out.
I carried Kaka and Pipi out of the bath.
Sure enough, Kaka and Pipi had sucked up the water and become gooey, unable to speak. After gently squeezing their bellies to drain the excess, I sat them on the stone wall at the back of the bath.
And then the two capybaras and the ten capybara girls filled the bath to bursting.
"... "
Raba, who had no room to enter, looked lonely.
Without Baka she had been at the bottom of the ranking and felt left out.
"Raba. Today let me give you a turn with the capybara. Here—let’s do the water-beating bath. Come over here. That’s it. Feel the warm water falling on you?"
"Yes, deshu."
Sploosh sploosh sploosh sploosh.
The falling hot water splashed over Raba’s head.
Good. Thanks to the water-beating bath we avoided any fighting.
Now that the bath was over it was lunch time, but what should we feed the capybara?
This place was wasteland, so there was no grass.
Fullru was probably making a forest upstream of the Urethral River, so there should be some.
It looked to be about the same size as the settlement, bright green. One log about the size of an elder tree, and a few small low bushes roughly knee-height around it.
I could take her there to eat.
Fullru could talk to me from far away with wind magic, but I couldn’t talk back to Fullru. Unfortunately I’d have to go directly.
