Chapter 95 - 94: If It Were Me, I’d Definitely Let You Be the Main Force
Tuesday. Nanliang High School.
As expected, the hottest topic of the day was the incident at Jinkang Pharmacy on the commercial street.
Of course, it was the hot topic yesterday, and it would be tomorrow, too...
High schoolers only act like civilized people when they’re studying. The rest of the time, they’re mostly like monkeys, jumping around the classroom and making a racket.
The most obnoxious of them all was, naturally, Huang Gang.
Huang Gang was perched on a desk in the back row, striking a cool "thunder" pose as he loudly spread rumors:
"When that black shroud came down, I charged right in and kicked it, then followed up with a vicious Body Forging Fist combo! Too bad I was just one move short... Ugh... I was so close!"
As an "indirect participant," he had been repeatedly warned by the police to keep things confidential.
He wasn’t supposed to mention that Teacher Zhou’s ashes had been stolen, as that would link back to the previous Training Camp.
He also couldn’t talk about what happened inside the black shroud, or even ask Yang Shen about it.
Huang Gang’s reaction was basically: ’Officer, sir, I’m an expert at this!’
’Isn’t this just bragging? I’m in my element here!’
"Huang Gang, they said there was a Late-stage Innate expert in there who couldn’t even get out. How could you possibly have damaged the black shroud?!"
Huang Gang waved his hand dismissively. "I have no idea. Maybe I have a special constitution. I’ve been gifted since I was a kid, after all."
Someone off to the side laughed. "Why don’t you just say it’s ’cause your piss is so yellow! You probably melted it open! HAHAHA!"
Hearty laughter echoed through the classroom.
In truth, everyone knew Huang Gang was full of it, and Huang Gang knew no one would possibly believe him.
It was all just for fun.
The joy of shooting the breeze was just that simple and pure.
In the middle seating area, Xu Bamboo propped her cheek up with one hand, strands of her hair falling over her fair skin. Her expression was one of mild exasperation.
’If he just kept his mouth shut, no one would ever know he was involved in this, just like me.’
’But he’s such a big mouth, so of course people are going to flock to him.’
Just as she was feeling bored out of her mind, a figure walked through the classroom door.
The moment a sliver of him entered her peripheral vision, the little radar in her mind successfully locked onto the signal and identified who it was.
She subconsciously pursed her lips, gently blowing her bangs out of her eyes as two small dimples appeared at the corners of her mouth.
Yang Shen dealt with a crowd of gossiping teens and finally made it back to his seat. He had come late on purpose so the teacher would start class right after he arrived, granting him some peace and quiet.
Sure enough, the second his butt touched the seat, the math teacher rushed in as if he were overdue on his class time payments. The crowd around Yang Shen had no choice but to disperse.
Yang Shen placed his Standard Long Spear under the desk. The thing took up a lot of space even when disassembled, but after getting burned once, Yang Shen had decided to keep it with him from now on.
This would prevent the awkward situation of wanting to stab someone but not having the right tool for the job.
’If I had just been able to stab Teacher Wu to death on the street that day, I wouldn’t have had to deal with so much crap afterward.’
The CLANGING sound drew a sideways glance from the math teacher, but after a quick look, he turned away.
He’d seen the news, too. He knew his class now had a certified badass in it.
When a student achieves something outside of school, teachers tend to have a sudden realization: ’I’m just an ordinary workhorse!’
’My loan sharking rates aren’t as low as the director’s, I can’t compete with the PE teacher for pharmaceutical rep side-gigs, and I’m always getting sick. Why should I care so much for a fixed salary?!’
Yang Shen might think the biggest change from his newfound fame was with his classmates, but that wasn’t really the case. They were just more gossipy.
Did he expect them to come over and kowtow to him?
The real "special treatment," however, was just beginning within the school’s faculty.
Of course... it was also possible his personal title, "Late Bloomer," was having an effect.
This special treatment was evident in every class that morning.
For example, a teacher would be passionately lecturing at the front, only to spot someone slumped over their desk. His gaze would shoot over like a dagger.
Then, he’d recognize it was Yang Shen.
’Hmm... always looking up is bad for the cervical spine. Better let Yang rest a bit.’
The Chinese teacher, who was also their homeroom teacher, decided to crack down on discipline before the college entrance exams. He walked in with a stern face and barked, "All rise!"
Just as he was about to lay into them, he suddenly added, "Yang Shen, you may be seated!"
’Hmm... Yang must have had a tough few days. His legs would probably go numb from standing.’
It seemed Yang Shen had completely taken over the ecological niche once occupied by Xu Bamboo, and to an even greater degree.
He didn’t feel excited... he just found it amusing.
As for the breaks between classes... whenever classmates surrounded him to gossip, Yang Shen would just repeat one sentence over and over:
"Everything Huang Gang said is true."
’Go ahead and make stuff up.’
Still, every so often, Yang Shen would glance at his "side quest"—the distance to the "Exotic Treasure."
One moment it was to the northeast, the next to the northwest... it was like the thing had ADHD.
Even at its closest, however, it was still over ten kilometers away.
He planned to go check it out the next time the distance dropped to within five kilometers.
The system had always been a troll; it once told him to plunder a "Mortal Influence" (the Yanhua Official government). He didn’t feel obligated to actually obtain the treasure.
He just wanted to satisfy his curiosity, provided he could guarantee his own safety.
It wasn’t until PE class that afternoon that Yang Shen—basking in the limelight, coddled by teachers, and radiating the vague air of a campus supernova—came face-to-face with his strictest taskmaster.
Huo Jun stood ramrod straight. His left hand was missing, the sleeve tied up, but this did nothing to diminish the imposing aura of a top dog.
From a good distance away, Yang Shen could feel the man grinning at him.
A Madman’s grin wasn’t a sign of kindness. A Madman’s grin meant: you still need to train!
Sure enough, Yang Shen was called out separately.
"The rest of you, thirty laps in twenty-five minutes. Go!"
The perfunctory attitude was written all over his face.
Ever since he became the PE teacher for Class Six, his routine was basically to start them running the moment class began. He would only return just before class ended, once most of the students were panting like dogs, to offer a few picky words of guidance.
His teaching effectiveness was hard to judge...
If you called him a master teacher, you’d be talking absolute shit.
But at an ordinary high school like Nanliang High School, it seemed the students of Class Six were indeed a bit more efficient at Strengthening their Qi and Blood Value.
Yang Shen had privately considered that Huo Jun’s style was purely military.
In the army, Professional Warriors didn’t need to worry about scoring points on college entrance exams, nor did they have to think about where their "source" came from. The government provided for them amply, especially the "low-realm Warriors," who received what could be called an on-demand supply.
Therefore, grassroots soldiers in the army only needed to focus on honing themselves and digesting their qi and blood. It was also standard procedure for instructors to "treat everyone equally" by raising the bar high for all.
It didn’t matter if there were good soldiers and bad soldiers; everyone was trained to the standards of a good soldier.
In a sense, it wasn’t that Huo Jun was slacking off; it was that this was the only way he knew how to teach...
Yang Shen spoke up. "Sir! I think Xu should join us."
Huo Jun had promised before.
Huo Jun was straightforward enough. "Xu Bamboo, fall out."
Huang Gang couldn’t hold back any longer. He raised his hand. "Sir! I think I can, too!"
Huo Jun asked, "What’s your name?"
Huang Gang puffed out his chest. "Sir! My name is Huang Gang!"
"Huang Gang, add ten laps. Class representative will supervise. Alright, get going."
Huang Gang: ???
Huo Jun paid him no further mind and led the other two toward the basement.
On the way, Huo Jun flashed a set of perfectly straight, steel-like teeth and clapped Yang Shen on the arm with his one hand. "Not bad, kid. The news was vague. How many did you kill?"
"Uh... two."
Huo Jun frowned. "Only two? Didn’t more than ten people die?"
Yang Shen: ...
"There weren’t that many... besides, Director Liang and the others were too strong. It wasn’t my turn to be the main force..."
Huo Jun shook his head, displeased. "Educators these days... they just lack a spirit of dedication. I remember back in my day, whenever my teacher faced a strong enemy, he would immediately retreat behind everyone else to leave the precious opportunity to the younger generation."
Huo Jun patted Yang Shen’s shoulder. "Don’t be discouraged. There’ll be a next time. If we run into danger together, I’ll definitely let you be the main attacker!"
Yang Shen: ’No, thank you!’
"Sir, what university did you go to?"
’So I can avoid it.’
"Me? I never went to university. It was an apprenticeship system back then. But my master later went to Jianghuai Sports Academy—the ’Jiangti’ you want to get into. Too bad he’s already retired, or I’d be willing to recommend you."
’Right, right, right... So this is what university is like...’
’Suddenly, my desire to take the college entrance exam has plummeted!’
Beside them, Xu Bamboo’s eyes were wide as saucers.
’Is this how you guys normally talk? Shenzi, how do you resist this kind of mental pollution?’
"Huo, what are we training today? By the way, I’ve broken through to the early stage of Marrow Refining."
Huo Jun seemed less excited about this huge breakthrough than he was about Yang Shen "casually killing a couple of people over the weekend." He just nodded and said:
"Weapons, blocking bullets, and I’ll teach you some killing techniques. Oh, and if you run into those ten milk-fed babies, you can have them act as your sparring partners."
The "ten-person group" that Nanliang High School had placed so much hope in was nothing more than sparring fodder in Huo Jun’s eyes.
Sure enough, in the basement, they once again encountered the ten-person group, who were receiving special instruction from a school teacher in a step-by-step manner.
Tian Zihan, who had been injured for unknown reasons that day, was already back on his feet and full of energy.
He was in the Marrow Refining Realm, after all. Merely being thrown through the air while unconscious, smashing into a pillar, getting draped over a chandelier, crashing through a display case, and washing his face with broken glass... none of it was enough to cause any fundamental damage.
He just had a few more bandages on his face.
Tian Zihan walked up with a smile. "Yang! I’ve been meaning to contact you, but unfortunately, I don’t have the contact information for any classmates in my phone besides the top ten in our grade."
His huge palm seized Yang Shen’s hand and shook it enthusiastically.
"Thank you for saving me on the commercial street! Sigh... I was just unconscious. If I had woken up, I could have lent a hand, too. Don’t let me find out who hurt me, or I’ll make them pay!"
Yang Shen: ...
