Chapter 60: The Improvement Is a Little Over the Top
In the early morning, Zhao Mengmeng slung her bookbag over her shoulder and set off for school.
Most people found their heavy bookbags to be a hassle, but for her, it actually made her feel lighter.
The weight in front and back created a balance, easing the pressure on her entire body!
Today was the day the monthly exam results were released. Last week’s exam had left her completely exhausted, and it took a day off spent shopping and singing with a few friends to finally relieve the stress.
The only regrettable part was that Yang Shen hadn’t joined them. It just felt like some of the fun was missing.
Ever since Yang Shen had started his late-game surge in class and his scores began to climb, no one felt it more acutely than she did. After all, the first blow of Yang Shen’s rise had landed squarely on her.
Zhao Mengmeng would never admit that the palm strike had actually made her develop a favorable impression of him. But seeing someone so close to her improve and strive for more, she couldn’t help but feel an instinctive urge to get closer, to soak up some of that positive energy.
She was curious about Yang Shen’s daily routine, his study methods, how many hours he slept at night, what he ate, and how many times a day he went to the bathroom. That was all.
This was especially true because he wasn’t some distant, untouchable figure; in fact, he used to be worse than her. That meant it was possible to absorb some of his energy. In contrast, the school’s number one student, Xu Bamboo, could improve all she wanted, but it had little to do with average students like them.
’But... I haven’t seen him for a while during the Training Camp, and it feels like Yang Shen has improved a lot again. He’s gradually advancing to a level I’m not familiar with...’
Today, aside from being curious about her own score, she was also curious about Yang Shen’s...
’If Yang Shen surpasses me, should I still try to get close to him?’
’Wouldn’t that be too calculating? What if Yang Shen thinks I’m the kind of girl who’d do anything for a better score?!’
’What if he makes some inappropriate demand of me? With a score that high, how could I dare refuse him?!’
Lost in her worries, Zhao Mengmeng arrived outside the school gate to check the monthly exam results.
As Nanliang High School, a place not exactly known for its humane practices, it was a given that the Monthly Exam Rankings would be proclaimed to the world.
Worried that public rankings would pressure the students? Without pressure, where would the motivation come from?!
The Monthly Exam Rankings weren’t just posted in their entirety at the school gate for even the first and second-year underclassmen to gawk at and critique; they even noted how many places each student had risen or fallen.
Every time, a few students who had dropped significantly would have mental breakdowns, screaming about jumping off a building.
Nanliang wasn’t too concerned. If a student actually died from the jump, it just meant their Body Forging wasn’t up to par and they hadn’t taken enough needles!
A six-story fall left you this badly injured? Your grades must be terrible, right?!
You must know shame to find courage!
Every one of our PE teachers is backed by a different pharmaceutical company, offering bulk discounts and seven-day no-questions-asked returns.
The dean of students even has precious low-interest loan opportunities, which he’s willing to selflessly share with every ambitious student!
Zhao Mengmeng managed to squeeze into the crowd surrounding the lists. Nanliang High School’s senior class had a total of 860 students, and the red ranking sheets were split into four sections, each with about 200 names. She habitually started her search in the lower-middle section of the second sheet.
Her Martial Cultivation was at the early stage of Bone Training. Spurred on by Yang Shen recently, she had been working harder and was gradually touching the threshold of the mid-stage. Based on comparing scores with others beforehand, she expected to be ranked between 300th and 350th in the grade.
As the median student in her class, Zhao Mengmeng was currently at a level that would land her in a second- or third-tier university.
After a long search, Zhao Mengmeng finally found her name.
Liberal Arts: 120, Martial Arts: 310, Total Score: 430, Current Monthly Exam Ranking: 322, up 9 places.
Zhao Mengmeng breathed a sigh of relief. ’As long as I’ve improved!’
An increase of nine places! That’s almost double digits!
Although she knew the college entrance exam wasn’t just a competition against her schoolmates but against the top scorers from across the city and even the country, she was still very satisfied with this level of progress. Tonight, she could negotiate with her parents for a gift and a big meal!
The needles for her usual Supplements were too long and thick. She was going to switch to a more comfortable one!
Zhao Mengmeng fantasized happily for a moment, then began searching for Yang Shen’s name. ’He only just reached the early stage of Bone Training a little over ten days ago, so his rank should be close to mine, right?’
First, she looked down the list, scanning almost 100 names without finding him. Then she started looking up the list, and after another 100-plus names, she still couldn’t find him.
’Are my eyes playing tricks on me?’
’No, that can’t be right. Did he perform poorly and end up wandering in the seven or eight hundreds?’
She subconsciously glanced to her right and saw Yang Shen himself standing right beside her!
She jumped, feeling as if she’d been caught red-handed.
"Yang Shen? Uh... what are you doing?"
Yang Shen looked at her, baffled. "Looking for my name, of course!"
’Is he studying the print quality of the list or something?’
"Find it yet?"
Zhao Mengmeng didn’t dare admit she had been looking for him too.
Yang Shen shook his head. "Nope. I’ve already looked from the 800s down to the 400s."
"You started looking from that far down..."
"I figured it’s better to be thorough..."
Zhao Mengmeng compared their heights and asked curiously, "Have you gotten taller?"
Yang Shen responded instantly, "You’ve got a good eye."
This made him even happier than his improved score. He was currently 176 cm tall and still growing. As a top-tier Horizontal Cultivation Method, the Buddha Sound Body Refining Technique was remarkably effective!
Zhao Mengmeng was so envious she wanted to jump up and down!
And just like that, Yang Shen had given her one more thing she wanted to learn from him.
Just then, someone near the top of the list let out a cry of shock. "Holy shit, this has to be a typo, right? What do you mean ’up 751 places’? Was the teacher drunk when they typed this?"
"What the hell... that score is higher than the total for the college entrance exam..."
"That’s hilarious... Who is this Yang Shen? Never heard of him before."
Compared to the other lists, the one with the top rankings was naturally surrounded by the best students. If they didn’t all know each other personally, they were at least familiar with the names.
It was always the same few people shuffling around—one moment you’re on top, the next I am.
Furthermore, the list for the top students broke down the "Martial Arts" score, letting everyone know the top students’ results in each sub-subject.
In contrast, the names on the list for the bottom ranks were printed especially small, as if they weren’t worthy of taking up space.
Curious, Yang Shen walked over and, sure enough, saw his name.
Yang Shen:
Liberal Arts: 202.
Martial Arts: 435
Subject 1 (65), Subject 2 (62), Subject 3 (66), Subject 4 (92), Subject 5 (140), Special Bonus (10)
Total Score: 637, Current Monthly Exam Ranking: 23, up 751 places from last time.
Yang Shen clicked his tongue. ’Looks like I absolutely demolished the rankings...’
Subjects 1 through 3 were pure numerical evaluations based on one’s cultivation realm. Although his Buddha Sound Body Refining Technique pushed him to the limits of his realm, his performance was only comparable to someone at the Late Middle Stage of Ordinary Bone Training, which wasn’t particularly outstanding.
What really set his score apart were Subjects 4 and 5. For the former, which had a maximum score of 100, he received an extremely high score of 92. Even without the "Special Bonus for Fist Intent," he might have had the highest score in the entire school for that single subject.
After all, Nanliang High School was just a regular high school; there wasn’t a single student who had reached level 9 mastery of the Sixth Set of Initial Realm Body Refining Fist.
As for Subject 5, the practical combat exam, he got 140 points from his match with Huo Jun... It could be said that this was second only to the legendary "beat the examiner to a pulp and get a perfect score"...
Yang Shen smiled to himself. He knew he had improved, but he had underestimated by just how much.
He thought he was already huge, but he never expected he could get even bigger.
’Right, I wonder how Xu Bamboo did?’
Xu Bamboo had spent the entire three days of the monthly exam suffering from a headache, which had a huge impact on both her liberal arts and martial arts scores...
Yang Shen looked directly at the very top of the list, and after a moment, his brows furrowed slightly.
Xu Bamboo... Total Score: 652...
Grade Ranking: 11th, down 10 places from last time.
In truth, at the level of the top ten, the score differences weren’t that large. The first-place student only had 670 points. If any of the students ahead of her had gotten just one multiple-choice question wrong, Xu Bamboo might not have dropped out of the top ten.
But with exams, it was an unspoken rule that everyone focused on the top three, top five, and top ten... Dropping out of the top ten felt like a huge gap!
Especially when falling from first place...
