Chapter 78: Spirit Plant Income and Rumors of the "Si Realm
Yang Shen’s first reaction was that he didn’t want to take on Zhao Mengmeng.
But then he figured, what’s one more? It wasn’t much different, and he’d get another person to run errands and spar with.
It was just a trial run, anyway. If it didn’t work out, they could all part on good terms. But Yang Shen strictly warned him not to spread the word to anyone else.
Huang Gang swore on his life again, but Yang Shen was already desensitized.
’Next time, just eat it,’ he thought. ’No need for all the theatrics.’
Meanwhile, Zhao Mengmeng nodded enthusiastically, her head bobbing with sincerity.
...
Back home, Yang Shen set these miscellaneous matters aside and immediately took stock of his Window Spirit Field.
There were two types of "High Source Plants" in total, which were what the Cultivation Side called "Spirit Grass." Of the two, Jade Marrow Grass grew the best and propagated the fastest, multiplying directly through root division.
Under his daily smooth little combo of the Ganlin Curse, Withering and Flourishing Curse, and Gathering Spirit Technique (Eye), they grew as fast as weeds. In just half a month, the initial three plants had become eighteen. About half of them were approaching their peak maturity, while the rest were of varying ages.
As for the succulent "Jade Pendant," which was supposed to grow much slower, its long "tail" was practically dragging on the floor. Yang Mo even had to set up a small trellis to support it; otherwise, it would have snapped under its own weight.
Yang Shen had cut a few pieces for leaf propagation, but there weren’t many.
He sent a message to Lin Yuebai: "There are actually several more plants where I dug last time. I’ll dig up the best ones and bring them over tomorrow."
Lin Yuebai’s reply came quickly: "Are they all Jade Marrow Grass?"
Yang Shen sent a photo of the Jade Pendant—not one from his Window Spirit Field, but of the original one as he’d found it in the mountains.
"I have this, too. Is it valuable?"
Lin Yuebai studied it for a moment. "This Jade Pendant is used as feed for certain ’Beneficial Source Insects.’ Since it grows extremely slowly, it’s actually quite valuable. A plant this large... I’d estimate it’s worth around 10,000. Of course, that all depends on finding the right buyer. It’s a niche item."
It was more valuable than the Jade Marrow Grass, but its propagation efficiency couldn’t even compare.
"I understand. I’ll bring them all to you another day."
After a moment of thought, Yang Shen decided to continue working with her. After all, they had built a small foundation of trust, which was far better than the other middlemen who were always trying to scam him.
Yang Shen calculated his potential earnings. At its current scale, the output from the Window Spirit Field was already quite substantial.
However, he planned to stop growing Jade Marrow Grass after selling the current batch and switch to something else.
Otherwise, if he kept bringing in Jade Marrow Grass, people would think he’d stumbled upon a whole nest of it.
He’d sell the Jade Pendant two or three times, and after that, he’d just use it to feed the insects. Same logic.
Without expanding the scale or affecting his Cultivation, he estimated his total earnings could reach around 100,000, perhaps even more.
And that was just in one month...
If the college entrance exams weren’t just around the corner, forcing him to focus, a monthly income of 100,000 still wouldn’t be the upper limit of what he could make from Spirit Plants.
With this money, moving to Jianghuai City after the exams would no longer be just a dream.
’If I can’t afford to buy, I can sure as hell afford to rent, right?’
Once he got past this hurdle, he could further expand his "family enterprise." By then, the four little ones might have learned a Spirit Plant Magic or two, which would make things much more convenient.
’The good days are still ahead!’

After a night of Cultivation, the next day was heavily overcast, so Yang Shen skipped his Rising Sun Boxing routine and started transplanting the plants in his Window Spirit Field.
He dug out the larger ones to be potted individually, squeezing the smaller ones together for now. He ended up with five Jade Marrow Grass plants that had reached their peak and one enormous pot of Jade Pendant.
He packed them into a box, left the house a little after six, and carried it all the way to the herb market.
Lin Yuebai was dozing off, rubbing her eyes inside the little shop.
He hadn’t been by in a few days, and in that time, the small shop had been cleaned up. It was neat and tidy, and all the dusty clutter had vanished to who-knows-where.
But this also made the whole shop look a bit empty. He couldn’t see any merchandise.
Lin Yuebai was dressed in her usual traditional style, her fine, porcelain-white figure completely concealed by a jacket with knotted buttons.
The soft, fine hairs on the back of her fair neck showed she was still quite young, and Yang Shen found himself wondering about her age.
’If she’s around my age, why isn’t she in school?’
Yang Shen said, "Are you not open for business... or did you just not stock any inventory? This whole place has the vibe of a ’mommy-blogger’s first business venture.’"
Lin Yuebai’s smile froze on her face. "I... I just opened. It’ll get better."
Lin Yuebai had sold the Jade Marrow Grass so quickly and for such a high price; he’d thought she was some kind of master.
But her shop was completely bare...
He recalled the conversation he’d overheard between several other shop owners: "Did you guys have a falling out with Jinkang Pharmacy? Are they trying to squeeze you out?"
Lin Yuebai’s expression didn’t change. She kept her smile. "Jinkang’s boss plays dirty, but it’s nothing to worry about. We’ll just counter their moves as they make them."
Yang Shen said, "Just make sure my herbs don’t get wrecked in the process."
Lin Yuebai said confidently, "Don’t worry. The Lin Family’s reputation is still good for that much. If there are any losses, I’ll compensate you."
’Compensate me with what?’ Yang Shen thought. ’You don’t even have a single packet of Isatis Root in this shop...’
To be blunt, her 10% commission for selling his goods wasn’t low, but the paltry couple hundred she’d make from it wasn’t nearly enough to support a shop.
The Spirit Plants he brought this time were worth around 20,000 in total, but it would take time and the right customers to sell them.
When he did the math, he would make twenty thousand, and Lin Yuebai would make two thousand. After factoring in the shop’s rent and utilities...
’Rounding up, it’s basically like I’m keeping her afloat. I’m the one putting food on her table!’
’If I’d known, I would have checked out the shop first before deciding to continue working with her. You could have at least begged me to stay.’
Yang Shen sighed. "You’d better run this shop properly. In this half-dead state, I might not look for you next time."
Lin Yuebai grew anxious. "Oh, don’t say that, President Yang! My little shop just opened. You could consider this an investment!"
She was even calling him "President."
But Yang Shen wasn’t falling for it.
’When someone starts talking about ’shares’ without pulling out a contract, you can basically translate that as, ’I’m just talking out of my ass.’’
Yang Shen pulled a pen and paper from his backpack. "Alright then. Let’s write up a formal agreement. Any damages or losses are on you."
Lin Yuebai pursed her lips but finally agreed, seeing she had no other choice.
Yang Shen had guessed right. At this point, she might as well be the woman he was keeping.
And he wasn’t even a very good provider; she was about to puke from eating cheap instant noodles all the time...
When it came time to write, however, Lin Yuebai took out a writing brush, pulled a small ink case from her pocket, and began to write elegant characters on the paper.
Yang Shen watched in astonishment. "What’s with you? Why are you using a brush?"
Lin Yuebai said helplessly, "My handwriting with a normal pen is hideous. If you want this agreement to be legally valid, it’s better if I use a brush. At least then my handwriting is legible."
A handwriting expert would take one look at her penmanship and just shake their head...
’At least she’s honest,’ he thought.
"You can’t write with a pen? Don’t you go to school?"
Lin Yuebai replied, "I did when I was little, but later... the education system was different, and we learned different things. I went to the Exotic Realm when I was seven. I’d come back to visit every now and then, but I only officially returned to Cyan Blue Star this year. I’m seventeen now."
Now Yang Shen was interested. "People can live in the Exotic Realm? I mean, Cyan Blue Star People?"
Lin Yuebai seemed to grow nostalgic as she recalled that time.
"It’s a huge hassle, but yes, it’s possible. The prerequisite is being involved in a project with Yanhua Official or a major corporation."
"My family is a Medical Family. My grandfather believed that the Witchcraft and Gu Technique of the Si Realm held immense value for the field of medicine, so he joined a special project."
"Unfortunately, it didn’t go very smoothly. My grandfather passed away in the Exotic Realm, and our family’s business on Cyan Blue Star was picked clean. That’s the story, more or less."
Lin Yuebai gave a self-deprecating smile.
"Six months ago, I was still using silver dollars to pay for things. It took some getting used to when I first came back."
