Chapter 460: [Batman Release] (3)

....

The villain wasn’t afraid of the hero, and that realization struck the theater audience with a profound sense of dread.

....

The tension in the IMAX theater reached a boiling point when the screen transitioned to the Major Crimes Unit interrogation room.

It was the scene the entire world had been waiting for, and the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object.

The harsh, stark-white, unforgiving lighting, combined with Regal’s masterful claustrophobic direction and the complete absence of any background music or Ludwig Göransson’s swelling orchestral score, left only the low, incessant buzz of fluorescent lights to fill the silence.

Inside the cage, the Joker sat alone in the dark.

Suddenly, the overhead lights snapped on with a blinding light.

CLACK.

Batman was standing directly behind him.

Christian Isaac looked massive, a towering demon wrapped in Kevlar and shadow. Without a word, he slammed the Joker’s head into the solid metal table.

The sheer brutality of the impact vibrated the theater seats.

"Where’s Dent?" Batman growled, his voice a terrifying, subsonic rumble.

The Joker didn’t so much as flinch, merely laughing as blood smeared across the cracked white makeup on his face.

"Those mob fools want you gone so they can get back to the way things were. But I know the truth- there’s no going back. You’ve changed things. Forever."

Batman hauled him up by the lapels. "Then why do you want to kill me?"

The Joker started laughing so hard it sounded like sobbing.

"Kill you? I don’t want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, no. No. You... you complete me."

Simon swallowed hard as Darren’s performance felt so intimately violating, matching Christian Isaac’s towering physical presence with an overwhelming psychological dominance.

"You’re garbage who kills for money." Batman sneered.

The Joker’s expression darkened as the manic glee vanished, replaced by a chilling, devastating clarity while he leaned forward and whispered directly into Batman’s face.

"Don’t talk like one of them. You’re not, even if you’d like to be. To them, you’re a freak like me... they just need you right now."

He looked up at Batman, his eyes searching, carrying something approaching pity.

"But as soon as they don’t, they will cast you out like a leper. Their morals, their code... it’s a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be." The Joker grinned, a jagged, terrifying smile. "I’ll show you. When the chips are down, these civilized people... they’ll eat each other. See, I’m not a monster... I’m just ahead of the curve."

Batman lost control, hurling the Joker through the two-way glass before relentlessly pounding his face into a bloody pulp, yet the Clown Prince neither surrendered nor begged.

He simply laughed hysterically, spitting blood with every breath.

"You have nothing, nothing to threaten me with. Nothing to do with all your strength."

Simon sat frozen, his eyes never leaving the screen.

The laughter echoing through the theater didn’t sound like Darren anymore.

It was sharp, unhinged, and so disturbingly genuine that it crawled beneath his skin.

"...I am not calling him Uncle for a while," Liam muttered quietly, shrinking a little deeper into his seat.

Chloe nodded almost immediately, clutching Samantha’s arm. "Yeah, me neither... I know he’s Darren... but right now, my brain refuses to believe it."

....

And then, the Joker dropped the ultimate bomb.

The Joker had both Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes tied up in separate warehouses rigged to explode, leaving Batman with time to save only one of them.

Batman raced out of the interrogation room, tearing through the streets of Gotham in the Tumbler.

The explosive cross-cutting between Batman racing to save Rachel, Gordon’s police racing to save Dent, and the ticking timers created a level of anxiety that made the audience physically recoil.

Inside a dark warehouse, Rachel was bound to a chair, barrels of gasoline stacked behind her.

Over a crackling phone connection, Dent strained against his own restraints in a different location. "Can you move your chair?"

"No." Rachel replied, her voice trembling. "Harvey, we don’t have much time-"

The timer read 2:47... 2:46...

"They said only one of us was going to be there..." Rachel sobbed.

Batman burst through the heavy metal doors, his cape flaring behind him like a vengeful wraith as he looked up, fully expecting to find the woman he loved.

Instead, he found Harvey Dent.

"NO! Not me... Why did you come for me?!" Dent screamed in absolute horror.

The Joker had lied, giving Batman the addresses in reverse, and by the time the timer hit five seconds, Batman could do nothing but drag Harvey Dent out as the desperate man fought to stay behind, screaming Rachel’s name.

In the other warehouse, Rachel watched the timer tick relentlessly toward zero and, speaking into the phone, her voice settled into a sudden, heartbreaking calm.

"Somewhere-"

AN EXPLOSION.

ALL-CONSUMING.

The blast ripped through the audio mix, turning the screen into a wall of roaring orange flame.

Half of Dent’s face, soaked in gasoline, ignited as Batman pulled him clear.

Rachel was gone.

The theater was plunged into an agonizingly silent aftermath.

Next to Simon, Samantha let out a soft, choked gasp, bringing a hand up to cover her mouth.

Chloe had buried her face entirely into her brother’s shoulder, and Liam was staring at the screen in absolute, horrified disbelief.

In superhero movies, the hero always saves the girl.

Regal Seraphsail just burned her to ash to prove a point.

....

The emotional weight in the theater was suffocating. The audience was no longer watching a blockbuster; they were trapped inside a tragedy.

The screen transitioned to Gotham General Hospital.

Harvey Dent lay heavily bandaged and hooked up to machines, with half of his face concealed beneath thick layers of gauze.

And sitting beside his bed, wearing a pristine white nurse’s uniform, was the Joker.

He peeled his surgical mask off, revealing his scarred grin.

Harvey strained against his restraints, his single visible eye wide with fury and grief, screaming blindly at the monster who had taken everything from him.

The Joker simply patted his hand, leaning over him like a demented guardian angel.

"It’s the schemers who put you where you are." the Joker whispered, his voice soothing, hypnotic. "You were a schemer. You had plans. Look where it got you. I just did what I do best- I took your plan, and I turned it on itself."

He un-cuffed Harvey’s right hand and placed a silver revolver into his palm, and he pressed his own forehead directly against the barrel of the gun.

"Look what I’ve done to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Nobody panics when the expected people get killed. Nobody panics when things go according to plan... even if the plan is horrifying."

The Joker smiled, his eyes burning with absolute, anarchic truth. "Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos."

Darren’s performance here was terrifyingly magnetic as he offered Dent the one thing Batman and Gordon couldn’t.

A twisted, broken sense of explanation and fairness.

"Oh, and you know the thing about chaos?" the Joker whispered. "It’s fair."

Harvey Dent looked down at the gun, and then he looked at the Joker.

Slowly, Harvey reached for his once two-headed lucky coin, now scarred by the fire, and held up its unblemished side for the Joker to see.

"You live." Dent rasped, his voice destroyed by smoke and screaming.

He turned the coin over, and the flip side was blackened, melted, deeply scarred.

"You die."

The Joker looked at the scarred coin. His grin widened into something purely, profoundly satisfied.

"Now you’re talking." the Joker whispered admiringly.

Dent flicked the coin into the air.

As it landed, the scene cut sharply away, leaving the audience breathless, realizing the horrifying truth: Gotham’s White Knight hadn’t just fallen.

He had been completely corrupted.

Simon turned to Samantha, only to find her looking back at him with eyes glistening with unshed tears, her expression reflecting the same mixture of awe and devastation that gripped him.

Regal really did tear down the psychological foundations of the genre, holding up a mirror to society’s morality, and asking the audience what they would do if the world suddenly stopped making sense.

And the terrifying part?

The climax of the film hadn’t even started yet.

....

The psychological suffocation inside the IMAX theater only tightened as the film hurtled toward its climax.

Regal Seraphsail’s direction was merciless, stripping away every safety net Fede Álvarez had meticulously built in the first half.

Gotham City, once a metropolis on the mend, was now descending into absolute, unadulterated chaos.

The audience watched, captivated and horrified, as the Joker enacted his ultimate social experiment.

Two massive ferries drifted dead in the water, and one filled with terrified civilian commuters, the other packed with the hardened inmates of Gotham’s penitentiary.

Inside the wiring of both ships, cell phones taped to the P.A. systems rang simultaneously.

The Joker’s voice, erratic and dripping with sick amusement, echoed across both decks. "Tonight, you’re all going to be part of a social experiment."

He explained the rules with venomous glee: each ferry held the detonator to the other’s explosives.

If one boat pushed the button, they would live, and if neither pushed it by midnight, the Joker would blow them both up.

Simon Lombardozzi could feel the tension radiating from the audience.

Beside him, Samantha had stopped eating entirely, her hand still gripping his as the moral dilemma played out on the seventy-foot screen.

Liam and Chloe were leaning forward, their eyes darting frantically between the cuts of the panicked civilians and the enraged prisoners.

The clock ticked down.

The sweat on the actors’ faces looked hyper-real in the crisp IMAX resolution.

The audience was silently asking themselves the same terrifying question the Joker had posed: When the chips are down, will these civilized people eat each other?

Inside the prisoner ferry, the tension broke.

A huge, heavily tattooed prisoner pushed his way to the front, towering over the terrified warden holding the detonator.

"You don’t wanna die. But you don’t know how to take a life. Give it to me."

The entire theater held its breath as the tattooed prisoner looked the warden straight in the eye, took the detonator, and, without a second of hesitation, hurled it out the window into the dark river below.

A collective, massive exhale swept through the AMC theater.

Liam let out a whisper. "Yes..."

The civilians on the other boat made the same choice, laying their detonator down.

Humanity had won, and the Joker’s thesis of absolute corruption had failed.

But there was no time to celebrate.

Batman, using a highly unethical, city-wide sonar network constructed by Lucius Fox - who had coldly deemed it "Beautiful. Unethical. Dangerous." swung through the construction site to apprehend the clown.

When Batman finally left the Joker dangling upside down from a steel beam, the audience thought the nightmare was over.

The Joker merely laughed, his manic cackle echoing through the wind as he revealed that he had never truly placed his bet on the ferries, but on Gotham’s White Knight, whom he had successfully dragged down to his own level.

The scene cut away, and the theater’s atmosphere plunged into an abyss of despair.
