Holy Roman Empire

Chapter 983 - Prelude to Restoration

As the chaos in Paris continues and it remains to be seen who will win or lose, Franz is already worrying about who will be the new King of France.

The alternative candidates must come from the three royal houses, there is no doubt about that. Apart from these three, no one else is going to be able to contain the field.

The first to go was the Bonaparte family, who, despite having the most supporters in the army, had made Napoleon IV the leader of the French resistance.

As it turns out, it is not an easy task to shake the pot. Napoleon IV was not willing to bear the responsibility of defeat and betrayal, and he had to carry the banner of resistance to the end under the banner of "exterminating traitors at home and defending sovereignty at home".

Even if Napoleon IV was willing to change his position, the Anti-French Alliance would not agree to a compromise.

Don't look at the Bonaparte dynasty's short reign over France, but other than that short-lived Napoleon II who didn't fuck up, the three remaining emperors were no slouches.

The lessons of history are still fresh in their minds, and no one wants another war against France. Against this backdrop, the restless Bonaparte dynasty was naturally the first to rule it out.

The range was narrowed by a third, but the choice was not any less difficult. In theory, the Bourbons and the Orléans were similar, but the reality was that Franz had to support orthodoxy, or at least show support in plain sight, as determined by the position of the ass.

If France is calm and quiet, and a random rubber stamp is chosen to go up to stabilize the situation, Franz doesn't have to have a headache, just push one up and be done with it.

It's a pity that the French throne is a hot potato, ordinary people up there simply can't roar. It's not to say that the man of genius, at least if it is also a master of internal struggle.

The first thing you need to do is to get a good idea of what you are looking for. It's not just a matter of time, it's also a matter of time. Unless it's a gifted, self-taught talent, otherwise simply can't play around.

Putting aside the identity, in Franz's view Napoleon IV is the most suitable. Despite being a loser, he was talented in internal combat.

The series of operations that began with the seizure of power by pro-government, to the suppression of domestic revolutions, to the fight against domestic interests, and finally to the timely shrugging off of defeats before the end of the war, are a testament to Napoleon IV's personal ability.

Truly, Franz didn't even think he could have done a better job if he'd been in a different position. After all, the special circumstances of France did not give Napoleon IV a chance to establish his prestige at all, and the political struggle was all about power.

Unfortunately, the most capable man happened to be the least fit master.

Europe is a world of legalism, the two dynasties of Bourbon and Orléans seem to have a lot of members, but the real qualified to inherit the throne is a single-digit number, from these few people to choose a "qualified monarch", the chances are too slim.

If the time forward twenty years, Franz also can push the Bourbon Henry V. That's right, the one who gave up his throne for a piece of rag.

At least he was smart. A simple test, knew that the throne is a hot potato, decisively chose to give up.

Unfortunately, this wise Lord had already met God. Even more tragic is that there is no offspring left, the nearest Bourbon bloodline is actually the Spanish royal family.

This does not mean that the Spanish royal family has a chance. When the Spanish crown was restored to power, it had made a deal with Napoleon III to gain the support of France and voluntarily relinquished the succession to the French throne.

Although the French orthodoxy thought it was declared under duress by the Bonaparte dynasty and had no legal effect; but other political factions disagreed!

The original time was a tense situation, with both the Bourbons and the Orléans eager to restore it, and the two political factions reached a compromise to co-opt Henry V.

Things are different now, and anyone smart enough to see that the revolutionary party that couldn't get the support of the European Union and jumped the loudest is surely finished. The Bonaparte dynasty was out early again, and it was left to the two of them to fight.

The Orleans faction was flatly convinced that the Spanish crown had relinquished the succession, and the other heirs of the Bourbon dynasty were distant branches of the collateral line, to embrace Philip, Count of Paris of the Orleans dynasty.

An inheritance to the throne, the French themselves were confused, and Franz even more so. The problem now is that it is impossible to elect talent; it is equally impossible to elect supporters.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is putting pressure on the French to get the royalist party to reach a compromise as soon as possible and introduce a king. Otherwise the revolutionary party will make it big and have their time to cry."

If they can't elect one, then they will simply let the French have a free hand. It can't get any worse when it's come to this anyway.

Foreign Minister Wiesenberg explained, "I'm afraid, Your Majesty, the revolutionaries can't be frightened by the revolutionaries making it big. The royalists have already prepared for this, and now there are no less than ten thousand noble private troops in Paris.

Plus they control the army again, even if all the republican armies put together are no match for them, not to mention the fact that the revolutionary party is still fighting within."

The fundamental reason for the growth of the royalist party was that the French people were not yet ready to accept the republic in their hearts, and the main reason, naturally, was that "there is no worst, only worse".

With the present clumsy performance of the revolutionary government in Paris, even if all the French were republican supporters, it would now become a royalist party.

"It's not like the country is mine, I'll leave when I've made enough money, and I'll leave and mind the flood".

After less than a year in power, the revolutionary government has completed the transformation of revolutionaries into bureaucrats. The worse the situation got, the harder the bureaucrats fished for money, because they knew that if they didn't try, they wouldn't have a chance.

The wise men among the republicans who started the second revolution were actually forced to do so. The revolutionary government in Paris was rotten, the royalists could be restored at any time, and it was too late to improve it from within, they had to tear it down and rebuild it.

Thinking about the performance of the royalist party in France, Franz now only felt "tired". They are simply a bunch of pigs. Do they really think that the King of France is an easy man to deal with and that anyone can stand up to him?

The millions of refugees out there, still starving for food, the domestic economy is collapsing, the whole of France is a powder keg, and a little spark is capable of exploding.

If it wasn't for the Anti-French Alliance detaining a large number of prisoners of war, the smoke of civil war would have risen long ago. Now a large group of people actually had the heart to fight over the heir.

"Hmph!"

After a cold drink, Franz said fiercely, "Tell them to establish an heir within the year no matter what, or wait until they starve!"

If it were a different target, Franz would have never played it that way. Threatening people with food would be forcing them to stand on their own, or find new food exporters instead, even if the cost was high.

But Franz was different, if it weren't for the war, people would have enough food to eat on their own. Even if the territory shrank, it would still be no problem to feed the existing population.

This means that France is only a short-term customer, whether food security is threatened or not, in the future, people will be self-sufficient in food, offended.

If the royalist party really didn't know what to do, let's start a civil war in France, let them fight it out, and then come out at the end to clean up the mess.

........

Concerned about the situation in France is not only Vienna, but all the European countries are closely watching the situation in Paris. It was already very surprising that the Allies did not intervene at the first opportunity.

Although it was not thought that the French would be able to turn the tables at this time, once the revolutionary government in Paris fell, it was feared that if the new government did not honor the treaty, it would be another storm.

London, Downing Street.

Unlike in the past, this time, when the situation in Paris was in turmoil, the British government acted extraordinarily indifferent, as if it was irrelevant to them.

In fact it's also true that even if the British government wants to intervene now, it doesn't know who it should and can support.

To put it bluntly, even if they were willing to offer help, the French wouldn't dare take it. The Allies are stationed just outside Paris, and anyone who hooks up with the British is the first to go.

Just because they couldn't intervene didn't mean they were unprepared. The government-in-exile, led by Napoleon IV, is now the biggest pawn in the hands of the British government. The pawn is just a little too clever, and mere bluffing simply won't work.

It should be noted that Napoleon IV was also a master with successful restoration experience, having successfully extinguished a great revolution back then. If it wasn't for the fact that the Allies hadn't withdrawn, he would have gone home long ago, but the revolutionaries couldn't stop him.

The government has also decided to increase the number of people in the country's capital to 1,000.

Now it's up to the revolutionaries to be competitive enough, and if the second revolution succeeds and hits the royalists at home hard, then we still have a chance."

The Antifa League didn't like the Bonaparte dynasty, but they disliked the republican government even more. If the situation is unmanageable, and Bonaparte wants to restore everyone can only hold their noses and admit it, which is how Napoleon III operated when he was restored.

Once the Bonaparte dynasty was restored, the nail in Britain's coffin on the European continent was planted again. Although it couldn't work in the short term, the country competed and fought not overnight, but for decades or even centuries.

"Prime Minister, I think it's best to put this issue on hold. Vienna is putting pressure on the royalist party to reach a compromise to determine a king as soon as possible.

Although the King's Royalist Party of France is split into three, their interests are still united when facing the republicans. Once a compromise was reached with the help of Vienna, the Bonaparte dynasty had no chance.

Against this background, it would not be appropriate for me to make an early head start. In case of an error in judgment, then the already bad Anglo-French relations will become even more irreconcilable."

It was not that George was making a fuss, but mainly that France was the most likely country on the continent to be anti-Austrian, or the only country that would be anti-Austrian was France.

The remaining countries, not to mention their strength, do not have enough "motivation" to oppose Austria. There is neither hatred to support, nor is there a big enough conflict of interest, for no reason at all, who is hungry to kowtow to the hegemon?

Repairing Anglo-French relations is almost the first and most important step in Britain's return to Europe. If you were on the wrong side of the succession to the throne, you wouldn't be able to take that first step for decades.

"It is true that now is not the time to meddle. But just because you can't interfere in the open, doesn't mean you can't operate in the dark.

There are quite a few people in France who are unhappy with Vienna, so first send someone to contact them secretly and choose some of them to invest in purely as an idle move.

As long as the seeds of hatred were perpetuated, sooner or later they would take root. At some point, they might be able to play a crucial role."

Deep down, Gladstone didn't want to be tossed around like this. But there was no way around it, Britain needed to defend itself.

Seeing as the Holy Roman Empire was in the middle of the day, the Sunset Empire was having a hard time. If we don't do something about it, it's going to be "sunset".

Although this kind of thing is the trouble of the next, or the next, or even the next....
