Vol 5. Chapter 2: Throwing Down a Threat?
On the way back to the dorm, Vinny thought it over and over, racking his brains to recall the plotline of Carillian Citrus and what events had happened around the protagonist group’s second year. But he could not come up with anything worth paying attention to. Rather, he could barely remember anything at all.
He had not played much of the original work in the first place. He had only played the opening. The rest of the plot had come from scattered discussion posts he had read on certain forums. He only knew some of the broad important events, and even those memories were hazy. He only knew a few major story beats and the general outline.
For example, in Carillian Citrus, Vinny knew that many of the important romance routes happened during first year, but that did not mean second year was unimportant.
Second year could be unimportant to any of the original work’s heroines, but it was absolutely important to him, the original work’s notorious young master.
Why?
Because second year was a very special point in time for him.
It was the point in the original work where the villainous young master Vinny was slain by Aesphyra, the protagonist and hero, and then forced to watch as she and the childhood friend who had openly confessed to him and been rejected by him showed off their love right in front of him.
Could anyone say that was not important?
They killed the man and stabbed his heart too!
Vinny still remembered the original plot. The blackened Vinny had hidden in Carillian Academy for an entire year. During first year, he had secretly continued accumulating power, colluded with [Bronze Blood], helped [Bronze Blood] guide the blood calamity into Carillian Academy, and then absorbed the corpses of all the students killed by the Demon Pillar’s blood calamity to strengthen his evil Spirit Soul, causing his demonic power to surge.
In the original work, during second year, the blackened Vinny had absorbed a large number of transcendent corpses with excellent talent and bloodlines, causing his realm to undergo a qualitative leap. During the “Carillian Chosen Leader Tournament,” he shone brilliantly and left every other participating student far behind.
However, as a villain, his luck was ultimately insufficient.
Just as he was about to seize Carillian Academy’s highest honor, the title of “Carillian Chosen Leader,” nothing unexpected happened—except, of course, the unexpected.
At the time, the original Vinny believed he had obtained an excellent opportunity.
An opportunity to get rid of Aesphyra.
He believed he no longer needed to keep enduring in silence, so he completely exposed his evil Spirit Soul and swore to kill the enemy and love rival who had always opposed him—that is, the original protagonist, the chosen hero of Tyrelis Continent, Aesphyra, the pure-blooded descendant of Carillian.
As for what happened afterward, everyone knew.
Facts proved that no matter how impressive you were, the moment you prepared to make an enemy of the protagonist, sorry, but you were already dead.
He should have taken a look at himself first. A villain who had walked an evil path, harmed who knew how much heaven’s harmony, and crawled his way up actually dared compete with the fate-chosen protagonist in luck. Did he have the ability for that??
That was certainly courageous of him.
However, the original Vinny’s evil Spirit Soul had already gone to his head. By the later stages, his mind had completely collapsed, so no one could expect him to make normal thoughts or judgments. He had walked all the way relying on his evil Spirit Soul too easily. His realm had risen even faster than Vinny’s in this life. It was normal that his evil Spirit Soul had directly replaced his thinking.
On top of that, without the nourishment of the Saintess blood, Vinny had always been someone who easily went to extremes.
But understanding that person was one thing. Vinny believed that no matter how much grievance someone had suffered before, that could never become a reason for harming the innocent.
Even if that person was himself.
So there was no problem with the original Vinny dying in the end. If he himself had lived in the original work, he would definitely have helped Aesphyra deal with that hopelessly blackened Vinny.
Mm-hm. After thinking it over, it seemed that was the only original-work event worth paying attention to?
The other thing was the “Carillian Chosen Leader Tournament.” This event was very important. It was not like the new-student entrance assessment that happened every year.
This was a tradition left from the Tyrelis Ancient Empire period. Only when a special celestial phenomenon was observed would this special competition be prepared and held. Because of that, no one knew when they could wait for it. Many Carillian Academy students might enroll with great talent and aptitude, but without that luck, they would never get the chance. They would graduate and leave, and then they would never have another opportunity to participate.
Compared to other competitions, this tournament was very special.
What made it special was that it had no year restriction. Aside from first-years who had just enrolled, everyone from second-year students all the way up to fourth-years could participate.
In other words, if a second-year student participated, it was very disadvantageous. Their opponents would be the academy’s central pillars, the third-year upperclassmen, as well as the academy’s soon-to-graduate old hands, the fourth-year big brothers. The pressure was enormous. Basically no second-year student could make it into the top hundred.
But, well, anyone who understood the original work understood.
Aside from Mirexia, the entire protagonist group was in second year. This was destined to be a tournament where the third- and fourth-year big brothers would get beaten until they questioned their lives.
And the final winner would receive generous rewards and preferential status provided by Carillian Academy, as well as the title of “Carillian Chosen Leader.”
How valuable was that title?
Put it this way. Among the successive principals of Carillian Academy, almost all of them had carried this title.
One could say that as long as someone had this title, that person would become the strongest candidate for the next principal of Carillian Academy. As long as they did not make any mistakes and their character was up to standard, then the next principal would basically be them.
Even if they did not become principal, or had no desire to become principal, wearing the Chosen Leader Medal and the exclusive Chosen Leader attire issued with the title was a kind of glory wherever they went. Even if the king of a nation came and saw it, he would have to show respect to such a person.
Because anyone who obtained the title of “Carillian Chosen Leader” would no longer be merely an ordinary student of Carillian Academy.
They would be placed under Carillian Academy’s absolute protection.
In the original work, the final winner of the Carillian Chosen Leader Tournament was, without even needing to think about it, the protagonist Aesphyra. Although Vinny had already been cut down by Aesphyra before the competition, even if they had truly competed, the original Vinny still could not have beaten Aesphyra. At most, he would only have lost in a different way.
She was already a direct descendant of the Carillian Family, the orthodox imperial bloodline of the Tyrelis Ancient Empire. Carillian Academy was also a possession of the Ancient Empire. It could not be more fitting for her to obtain this title.
As for this competition, Vinny was actually rather interested.
He just did not know whether, under the influence of so many butterfly effects in this life, the celestial phenomenon had also been affected. Would this grand tournament still be held according to the original plot?
If it could be held, then winning this title would be an enormous help to him right now.
Forget it. That was all for later. He did not even know whether things could still follow the plot, and he was already thinking about winning.
Could he beat Aesphyra?
Ahh, so in the end, it seemed there were no useful clues at all??
Vinny somewhat resented the fact that he had been like a locust in his previous life. For every game, after buying it, he had simply played through the opening and then gone to read guides, causing him to pay no attention at all to many of the game’s finer plot details.
He knew that at this point in the original work, Vinny was about to hit the jackpot, but now the world’s direction had changed completely.
In the past, he would have panicked, afraid that he might be killed by the world’s repair force. But now?
Aesphyra would kill him, while Mirexia stood beside them unmoved and showed off her love with Aesphyra?
Uh.
Vinny felt he could not quite imagine that scene. If this were an anime, that would already count as extremely serious OOC behavior.
Not to mention, if one day Aesphyra truly developed killing intent toward him...
Vinny fell silent. He felt that if that really happened, he did not know whether the knife stabbed into his heart would hurt more, or the knife that pierced through his heart would hurt more.
Since the original plot could not possibly happen anymore, what would happen during second year?
Speaking of which, in another week, the new first-years would be entering the academy.
As the newly appointed big brother of the second-years, Vinny carried the important task of recruiting new members for the club.
Sigh, sigh. There was no way around it. As Carillian Academy’s number one school heartthrob, if he did not properly make use of his face, it really would be a waste of resources. This kind of thing really could only be done by him.
Besides, what if?
What if he attracted some random junior girl??
Right??
Besides, the current him was very famous among the second-years. He was a proper leading figure among the second-years, top three in combat power. That title had its own appeal too. It could absolutely attract a pile of admirers, boys and girls alike, right??
Soon, a week passed. The day of new-student enrollment quickly arrived.
However, as the saying went, ideals were full and beautiful, while reality was skin and bones. It did not go as Vinny had imagined. There was no group of cute junior boys and girls calling him Senior.
“Hey, hey. You’re Vinny, right?”
“Mm??”
At the time of new-student enrollment, before Carillian Academy had formally held the welcome assembly, Vinny was caught at the entrance of the dining hall by several unfamiliar young men and women.
“Yes, I’m Vinny. What’s wrong?”
Vinny glanced at the clothes on their bodies. Whether male or female, they were all wearing ornate noble robes and silk lotus-leaf dresses.
Young men and women, wearing something other than Carillian Academy uniforms.
That made their identities very obvious. They were probably new students who had just passed the entrance assessment and were about to formally enroll in Carillian Academy. They had not yet received their issued uniforms, so they could only wear their own clothes.
Long experience told Vinny that these junior boys and girls did not seem to be the same as what he had imagined. They were not admirers. They had not come to ask for his signature or anything like that. They had come to cause trouble for him.
“You claim you’re a descendant of Facilis??” the young man in the lead said with an unfriendly expression. His opening line was extremely aggressive.
“I think that isn’t something I claim myself, little friend.”
Realizing that the other party held no goodwill toward him, Vinny also withdrew his expression and put both hands in his pockets. He had never been polite to people who were hostile toward him.
“What a monstrous lie,” a girl behind the young man said coldly. “Aren’t you afraid the Goddess will condemn you and punish you?”
“I think perhaps you people need hearing aids??” Vinny frowned. “Did you not hear what I said just now, or do you not understand human speech? Or is it both? Did you tear one side of your face off and stick it to the other side, so one side has no shame and the other side is thick-skinned??”
“All of you juniors, I don’t care about your family backgrounds, nor am I interested. But for your own sake, this senior will remind you of one thing. Don’t get involved in matters that have nothing to do with you.” Vinny lifted his chin. “Personally, I really dislike expressing hostility toward juniors. It makes people think I’m bullying children. So please don’t give me that opportunity.”
“Impostor. Your crude lie is about to be exposed,” another young man said. “It’s truly unexpected that some people actually believed it. How ignorant and lacking in enlightenment.”
“Very soon, everyone will know and firmly believe that you are not a descendant of the Dawn Goddess, nor do you possess the Facilis bloodline.”
“The true blood of Facilis is about to descend. And you will become that speck of shameful dust.”
“???”
Vinny listened to these people speaking one after another and frowned. “Descend? What’s descending?”
“Don’t think that just because you have some strength and achieved a few insignificant accomplishments, you can really make everyone believe the identity you forged.”
“Why are you wasting so much breath on him? Genuine goods and fake goods can’t be compared. The moment they’re compared, the fake will be exposed. He’ll soon become everyone’s laughingstock.”
“Let’s go. You’d best conduct yourself carefully.”
After saying that, the young men and women brushed past Vinny and left.
“? What the hell. Whose little brats are those?” Vinny watched their departing figures, angry and amused.
Damn it.
Sure enough, an enormous gulf existed between imagination and reality.
Before this, he had still fantasized about how cute the newly enrolled junior boys and girls would be. Now that he had seen them, damn it, they were all lunatics.
What cute random junior girl? That was even more of a fantasy within a fantasy. They were just a bunch of stinking brats.
Learning to throw down harsh words and leave. Was that super fun or something??
Did these little brats understand how to respect their seniors? They really were not cute at all.
Also, what did those words they had just said mean?
Sigh, sigh. Forget it. They were just a bunch of ignorant, uneducated brats who did not know the height of heaven or the depth of earth. Why bother with them?
After a year and a half since crossing over, Vinny felt the greatest improvement had been in his state of mind. He could already purely watch the show without getting angry.
After all, even Buddha did not save idiots.
In his eyes, they were simply a group of abstract little brats who did not understand the world. They most likely had Church backgrounds, had grown up in ivory towers, had never experienced the bitterness of the world, had never truly walked among the people, and only knew how to talk big from high towers where they had no worries over food or clothing.
This little interlude would not delay Vinny’s appetite.
After eating, Vinny returned to the dorm.
Classes would begin soon. He had to make some preparations as well.
As for the club’s new-member recruitment, he felt that it was a little shaky. Although not every new student was like that, he felt recruiting new members might be an extremely difficult task.
As for the welcome assembly that was held afterward, Vinny [N O V E L I G H T] naturally did not go, nor did he pay any attention to it. Ordinarily, he loved getting free benefits the most, but this time, he did not even want to go mooch food and drink.
