Chapter 867: Something simpler, yet so complex
Before Julian could answer, she closed the distance herself, tipped her chin upward, and rose onto her toes.
For a brief second she seemed to doubt whether she should go through with it or not.
...
Then she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his.
The kiss was surprising, yet warmer than anything she had ever felt in her life.
In that small contact was everything she had been holding back: the comfort of being seen, the relief of honesty, and perhaps a quiet rebellion against the standards that had pressed around her for as long as she could remember.
For once, she was not performing the role expected of her. She was simply answering a moment with the truth of what she felt.
Julian remained still at first, letting the moment belong to her.
He had said those things and kissed her earlier mainly to make her less suspicious about his identity. Even he had not expected it to lead here.
The softness of her initiative caught him off guard, and for a few seconds he did nothing more than receive what she offered. Then, slowly, his hands rose and settled at her waist.
Vanessa’s eyes opened at the contact. For a brief instant she looked at him, as if confirming the reality of what she was doing. Then she closed them again. She knew where this could lead. She knew the lines it threatened. And in that moment, she did not care.
As she had expected, he deepened the kiss.
His tongue traced the seam of her lips, tasting the faint sweetness of her lipstick. Vanessa’s heart pounded so hard it seemed to fill her ears. Her own hands moved almost without instruction, rising and wrapping around his back as she leaned into him.
When his tongue asked for entrance, she gave it willingly. Their mouths opened to each other, and the kiss grew fuller, warmer and more searching. Their tongues met and intertwined in exploration that felt less like conquest and more like the fragile crossing of a boundary both of them had pretended not to see.
The night air around the balcony seemed to fall away. Vanessa held on to him as if the contact itself might steady the whirl of emotion inside her. Julian kept her close, but not trapped, matching her pace rather than overtaking it.
Then, suddenly, she pulled away.
Her face was scarlet. The flush rose all the way to her ears and remained perfectly visible even in the dim light. For a second she only stared at him with wide eyes, as if shocked by her own daring. The softness of the kiss still lingered between them, but whatever courage she had carried earlier, now faded completely to shyness.
"Good night, brother," she managed.
Before he could reply, she turned and fled into the corridor. Her footsteps retreated quickly over the stone, growing fainter until they disappeared into the deeper quiet of the eastern wing.
Julian remained on the balcony for a moment longer, the faint warmth of her still present in the space she had left behind.
Below, the darkened duchy continued its restless wait for morning. On the empty balcony, only the wind moved, carrying with it the lingering imprint of a kiss that had been meant as reassurance and had become something far more complicated.
**
And soon the morning arrived as well.
Julian didn’t even have time to take a break. Word had already spread throughout the castle that the King had entered Count Leftwood’s territory, from where the duchy officially began.
From that moment on, the entire estate moved as if every remaining hour were borrowed.
Early in the morning, Olivia came to his room with four maids. There was no long greeting, no leisurely exchange. She gave him one assessing look, then directed the women immediately.
They were responsible for everything: his clothing, his hairstyle and even the light makeup that would make him look even more presentable.
Although, Julian was not a fan of makeups, he did not resist. There was little point in resisting when the entire duchy was already doing their best.
What followed was two full hours of constant attention.
One maid worked carefully through his hair, washing, drying, and setting it with a scented gel until every strand lay exactly where she wanted it. Another prepared formal clothing, making sure that it was in a perfect condition. A third hovered with accessories, offering one option after another, while the fourth remained near Olivia, ready to adjust anything the Duchess found imperfect.
Their commands filled the room.
Sit straighter.
Turn your head.
Lift your chin.
No, not that clasp.
The other one.
Again.
By the time they finally stepped back, Julian felt as if he had been reassembled rather than dressed.
He turned toward the tall mirror.
For a moment, he could only stare.
Kraven had always been somewhat unusual for a noble’s son. He was handsome enough, with features slightly above average, but he was hardly the kind of man who could make an entire room stop and stare.
Yet the figure reflected in the mirror now was something else entirely.
He looked as if he had stepped straight out of one of those romantic fantasy novels, where a young prince rides off to rescue his beloved from demons.
His hair had been slicked back and carefully fixed in place, giving his face a cleaner and sharper frame. The lines of his jaw, the shape of his eyes, even the composure of his mouth seemed more defined under the refined styling.
Julian stared at his reflection for another moment.
He almost did not recognize himself.
Moreover, his clothing completed the transformation.
The shirt and trousers were cut from fabric of the highest quality, making every step and turn smooth on his skin. Over them rested a thick golden cloak that was fastened at the shoulders with clasps.
One of the maids had strongly urged him to wear more crystals across his chest, insisting that men of real standing often displayed four or five gems as a sign of rank. Julian refused and wore only two.
Even so, the effect was striking.
