Chapter 411 - 265: I Must Immediately Start Piggybacking on Jiang He
As dusk fell once more, Jiang He waited for Professor Wang to finish her class.
While he was waiting,
Jiang He gave Teacher Shen a call.
Teacher Shen shared many little stories with him.
She said that after returning to the university, she’d become something of a celebrity.
In that old thread about the campus belle contest,
someone had posted the news reports from the United States.
Now everyone knew that not only was Teacher Shen incredibly accomplished herself, but she also had an equally accomplished boyfriend.
This development had neatly solved the problem of her being harassed.
She said, "There was this guy, Liang Chen, who was bothering me for a while. I didn’t tell you about him. But today, he came up and sincerely apologized, saying he was wrong and sorry for disturbing me and all that~"
Hearing that someone had been harassing Teacher Shen, Jiang He’s scalpel-wielding hand began to itch.
’You’re lucky you apologized early, kid,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, you’d have our harmonious society to thank for saving your skin.’
Basking in the sunlight, listening to the sounds of a basketball game from the courts in the distance, and smelling the aroma of food wafting from the cafeteria, Jiang He continued his call with Teacher Shen.
It all gave him a sense of youthful innocence.
It felt like he was young again, on the phone with his online girlfriend, dreaming about the future. It was pure bliss.
Unable to resist, Jiang He decided to tell Teacher Shen a joke.
This was his daily "harassment" of Shen Yu, which was also his daily confession of love.
"Teacher Shen, question: If SpongeBob went to the doctor for a check-up, what disease would they find?"
"I don’t know."
"Answer: Porous-itis."
"Ugh, that’s such a cold joke~"
Teacher Shen suddenly cleared her throat.
As if she had been planning this, she said, "Question: Why do some people always forget to use parentheses in their citations when writing a paper?"
Jiang He: "Why?"
Shen Yu: "Because... their parentheses are just a reflex!"
Jiang He: "Hiss... so cold. Teacher Shen, do you have the heat on over there?"
Shen Yu: "Hahahahaha, pot, meet kettle, okay~"
The young couple chatted until Wang Xiaoqing’s class was over.
As Wang Xiaoqing walked out of the classroom, she spotted Jiang He, and her expression changed in a flash, like a performer in a Sichuan opera.
Master Extinction? Transformed into a cheerful little girl!
She strode over. "Jiang He, not busy today? What brings you back to the university?"
Jiang He smiled and said, "I came to check on the lab and talk to Teacher Yang about something."
Wang Xiaoqing asked, "What is it?"
Jiang He glanced down the hallway out of the corner of his eye.
Students inside the classroom were leaning against the doorframe, openly peeking at them.
Jiang He suggested, "Let’s talk as we walk."
"Alright."
The two walked side by side, leaving the academic building and heading toward the laboratory building.
Walking over fallen leaves, Jiang He got straight to the point. "This afternoon at Affiliated Hospital No. 1, Teacher Yang came to talk to me. He mentioned your recent progress with meeting the parents, and... your plans for trying to conceive."
Wang Xiaoqing’s steps faltered slightly, a hint of embarrassment flashing across her face. "Tsk, that Old Yang, how can he just tell everyone everything! Aigh, he must be worried sick. He came to you, so it must be about me staying in the lab, right?"
"Yes. Teacher Yang is worried that the wet-lab environment on the front lines might affect your chances of conceiving, but he knows your personality and that you would never want to leave the team at such a critical juncture."
"So we discussed a compromise. You wouldn’t have to leave the team, but would instead shift to a supporting role."
"The National Targeted Drug Research and Development Center will be officially launching soon. Many tasks will require a high level of specialized expertise. People without the right knowledge can’t do the work, and I don’t dare use people I don’t fully trust, even if they are knowledgeable. Besides you, I can’t think of a second person for the job."
After hearing him out,
Wang Xiaoqing heaved a deep sigh.
After a moment, she said softly, "To be honest, I’m still not quite reconciled to it."
As a female professor who had struggled and clawed her way through the field of basic medical science for over a decade, she knew better than anyone that a career in research was like sailing against the current.
Once she stepped back from the front lines, no matter how important the logistical work was, her acuity at the cutting edge of academia would inevitably dull.
She wouldn’t be able to personally conduct the key experiments in the massive KRAS targeted therapy project—a project that could change the history of human medicine.
For a scholar, this was undoubtedly a huge regret.
Jiang He could roughly understand what the professor was thinking. He asked, "Is the pressure from family too great?"
Wang Xiaoqing shook her head. "Not entirely. Of course, I want to start a family too. No one is forcing me. It’s just... aigh..."
She sighed again, her gaze falling to the ground. "Making a choice is always difficult. And who knows if I’ll regret this choice in the future?"
There was no answer to that question.
Whether one chose to focus on a career or return to family life, regret would always exist in one form or another.
There’s a classic story that goes like this:
If you have to choose between two tour groups, A and B,
no matter which one you pick, you’ll come back regretting it, thinking you should have chosen the other one...
Jiang He thought for a moment and finally said, "He’s a good man."
Wang Xiaoqing smiled. "Playing wingman for your teacher again?"
Jiang He said, "Not really. Although he can be a bit childish sometimes, he’s very responsible. I sincerely believe he’s someone you can entrust your life to."
After listening, the corners of Wang Xiaoqing’s mouth gradually turned up into a smile.
She looked up at the night sky again, her expression softening. "Yes, that’s a big part of why I made my choice."
With the knot in her heart untied, their steps became much lighter.
Chatting about the upcoming resource allocation and approval processes, they soon arrived at the laboratory building.
The lab was on the third floor, right next to Professor Sun Changming’s oncology research institute.
As they reached the hallway, they saw a group of people coming out of Sun Changming’s lab.
The group consisted mostly of graduate and doctoral students, and most of them were carrying cardboard boxes.
