Chapter 203 - 147: The Senior Attending Was Also Dealt a Blow
Southern Medical University, Dorm Room 402.
The last thing Jiang He said before hanging up echoed in Chen Hao’s mind:
"A top-secret national operation. People could die."
He put down his phone, pulled out his chair, and sat down without a word.
Only two sounds remained in the dorm room.
One was the sound of Li Zijian working out.
Ever since the blow of being cheated on by his ex-girlfriend, Han Tiantian, and getting a wake-up call from Teacher Shen, he hadn’t gone back to the bars. He had even cut off contact with those rich older women.
He’d spent two hundred yuan on a set of dumbbells from a second-hand market and would start going at them hard the moment he got back to the dorm each day.
In his own words, he had to first squeeze out all the excess fluid and pent-up energy before he could think clearly.
The other was the rapid clacking of a keyboard.
Noticing Chen Hao’s strange silence after the phone call, both sounds stopped simultaneously.
"Haozi, what’s wrong? What did Old Jiang say?" Li Zijian asked, picking up a towel to wipe his sweat.
Chen Hao turned, his expression grave. "Old Jiang said he’s on a top-secret national operation. It’s a matter of life and death, and he told me not to call him tonight under any circumstances."
Li Zijian’s hand, wiping his sweat, froze in midair.
Wang Bo’s brow furrowed. "Again? Didn’t he just get out of the hospital? How did he get caught up in another life-or-death situation?"
"Yeah, he’s pushed his body way past its limits. What could he possibly be doing in the middle of the night? Last time, with the car crash, he performed back-to-back surgeries and collapsed from exhaustion right in the ICU. This time..."
They knew Jiang He’s personality all too well.
He might seem mild-mannered on a normal day, but when it came to life-and-death matters, he was the kind of person who would truly risk his own life to save another.
"He didn’t sneak back to Affiliated Hospital No. 1 to perform surgery, did he? Didn’t Director Yang strictly order him to get some rest?"
"Hard to say..." Wang Bo rubbed his eyes and sighed.
Chen Hao noticed he wasn’t himself and asked casually, "What’s up with you? You’ve been sighing all night."
It would have been better not to ask. The moment he did, Wang Bo grew despondent.
"Don’t even ask. I screwed up my novel. In yesterday’s Chapter, I had the second male lead go to the female lead’s place for her birthday and stay the night... I swear I didn’t write anything! I just wrote that he slept in the guest room! But the comment section completely exploded. All the readers are flaming me for writing a toxic plot, saying it’s a cuckold story. I feel awful."
Li Zijian walked over and patted Wang Bo’s shoulder. "I don’t know anything about writing novels, but based on that plot point, you deserved to get flamed."
"I was just trying to create a misunderstanding and some dramatic conflict! Ugh..." Wang Bo grabbed his hair in frustration. "I’m never writing a scene like that again. If the book bombs, how am I supposed to invest in Old Jiang’s research?"
Chen Hao had no time for Wang Bo’s web novel drama. He stood up and snatched the keys from his desk.
"This won’t do. I have to go to Affiliated Hospital No. 1. With Old Jiang’s personality, if no one’s watching him, he’ll really work himself into the ground."
Li Zijian nodded. "Go on. Call us if anything happens."
「Affiliated Hospital No. 1.」
The inpatient building was still brightly lit.
Chen Hao familiarly made his way to the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department.
At the nurses’ station, a few nurses were busy writing up their nursing records.
He poked his head in and scanned the doctors’ office, but he didn’t see Jiang He.
Just as he was about to turn and try his luck at the Department of Critical Care Medicine, a figure in a white coat walked toward him.
It was Xu Chen.
Xu Chen was holding a few patient files, his head down as he checked the data.
Their relationship had eased considerably ever since the massive car crash on the Ring City Expressway. They had essentially fought side-by-side after Xu Chen overcame his fear to perform hemostasis and suturing in the emergency hall.
"Brother Bing, you’re on the night shift today?" Chen Hao said with a smile, his hands in his pockets as he greeted him.
Hearing the nickname, Xu Chen stopped in his tracks and clicked his tongue. "Chen Hao, can you stop calling me that?"
"Just kidding." Chen Hao walked closer. "Seen Old Jiang?"
Xu Chen shook his head. "No. Isn’t he supposed to be recovering?"
At this, Xu Chen clutched the patient files in one hand and slipped his other hand into the pocket of his white coat.
He turned his body slightly, his gaze passing over Chen Hao’s shoulder to look calmly toward the end of the hallway.
Then, he said with perfect composure, "Jiang He’s battlefield is no longer here. All we can do is hold down the fort and not cause him any trouble."
Chen Hao was stunned.
He stared at Xu Chen for a full five seconds.
That posture, that tone of voice... it was so familiar.
’Isn’t this exactly how fucking Jiang He talks?!’
Xu Chen was secretly imitating Jiang He’s badass persona!
And it was a damn near perfect imitation!
Chen Hao’s mouth twitched, and he was just about to make a sarcastic comment.
From the other end of the hallway, a nurse’s shout suddenly rang out, "Dr. Xu! Bed 31 is suddenly coughing up blood! The family is ringing the call bell!"
Xu Chen, who had been striking a profound pose just a second ago, shot up instantly.
"Coming!"
He broke into a mad dash toward Bed 31’s room, shouting back at the nurse as he ran, "Get the crash cart over there! Notify the attending physician!"
Chen Hao stood frozen, watching Xu Chen’s retreating back, and swallowed the sarcastic comment he had been about to make.
He let it go.
It was harmless to imitate his idol from time to time. What mattered was that he could step up without hesitation in a critical moment. The kid really had changed.
Chen Hao smiled and turned back toward the nurses’ station.
"Sister Jing."
Chen Jing looked up, a little surprised. "Chen Hao? Are you looking for Dr. Jiang?"
"Yeah." Chen Hao nodded. "Has Old Jiang been to the department tonight?"
"No, I haven’t seen him in days. What’s wrong?"
Chen Hao’s frown deepened.
’He’s not in surgery... could he be in the ER?’
"Chen Hao, did something happen to Dr. Jiang?" Chen Jing asked, growing nervous as she saw his serious expression.
Chen Hao glanced around and lowered his voice. "Old Jiang just called me. He told me not to contact him tonight no matter what. He said..."
The ears of the several nurses on duty instantly perked up.
