Chapter 196 - 143: Golden Sunflower Card
Jiang He walked over to the ticket machine, pulled a number, and glanced at it.
More than thirty people were ahead of them.
The two of them found a pair of seats in the waiting area.
Just then, a small commotion erupted at the front of the lobby.
A middle-aged man cut straight through the long line and squeezed his way to the counter.
"Hey! What do you think you’re doing? You can’t just cut in line!" A woman at the very front of the line wasn’t having it. She frowned and scolded him loudly.
The others in line chimed in, their faces showing their displeasure.
"Please, everyone, I’m begging you!" The middle-aged man turned around, pressing his palms together and bowing repeatedly. His forehead was slick with sweat. "I’m in a real hurry! Someone in my family is in the emergency room, and they’re waiting for this money to pay for surgery! If I’m late, it’ll be too late! I’m begging you, I’m so sorry, so sorry!"
Hearing that it was for life-saving money for a family member, the indignant crowd instantly fell silent.
The woman sighed and waved her hand. "All right, all right. Saving a life is more important. You go ahead."
No one else said a word. They silently took half a step back, allowing the man to cut in.
Shen Yu sat in her chair, watching the scene unfold, then glanced down at the ticket in Jiang He’s hand.
She frowned slightly, a hint of worry in her eyes.
"There are so many people... Should we try another branch? Maybe we could just go to one that’s a bit farther away?"
’If we wait at this rate,’ she calculated, ’it’ll take at least two hours.’
They didn’t have much time this afternoon to begin with. If they wasted this long at the bank, there wouldn’t be much left for their date and shopping trip.
Jiang He stood up. "No need. Come with me."
At the VIP service desk, the female teller didn’t have to serve regular customers, so she was currently a bit bored.
When she saw Jiang He and Shen Yu approach, she didn’t pay them much mind, ready to direct them to the regular area to take a number.
The next second.
Jiang He took a card from his wallet and placed it on the counter.
A Golden Sunflower Card.
Back in ’08, this card signified a deposit balance of no less than 500,000.
The teller froze, then said, "Sir, I’m so sorry to have kept you waiting. What can I help you with today? Please, follow me. The VIP lounge is on the second floor."
She gestured for them to follow.
Shen Yu watched the whole thing unfold.
She stole a glance at the card, then looked at Jiang He beside her.
’Dr. Jiang... is *this* amazing?’
Second floor.
The teller pulled out chairs for them, inviting them to sit, then immediately brought over hot tea and snacks.
Shen Yu rested her chin on her hand, and out of sheer boredom, her mind began to wander.
’All this time, I thought Jiang He was just a medical genius.’
’But I never imagined he’d be this well-off financially.’
’So... if we get married, how much of a dowry will I need to prepare to be worthy of him?’
A few seconds later, Shen Yu snapped back to reality.
’What are you thinking! You idiot! Stop it! We aren’t even officially dating yet! How did my thoughts jump to a dowry?! Aaaah!’
She quickly lowered her head, staring at her tea and scolding herself.
The teller asked, "Sir, Ma’am, please enjoy your tea. How may I help you today?"
Jiang He tucked the Golden Sunflower Card back into his wallet, pulled an ordinary blue debit card from another slot, and handed it over.
"I need to make a transfer."
The teller was confused. "Sir... this? You’re not going to use the Golden Sunflower Card for your transaction?"
"Oh, the card belongs to someone else. I *could* use it, but the amount I’m transferring today is pretty big. A large transfer from a card that’s not in my name would probably mean filling out a ton of proxy forms and going through endless authorization checks. It’s a waste of time. My own card will do just fine. The balance is more than enough, so let’s just use it."
The teller’s brow furrowed.
’Someone else’s card? Did he just use someone else’s card to cut in line? That’s going a little too far.’
Although that’s what she thought, she didn’t let it show.
Maintaining her smile, she took the card with both hands and swiped it. "Very well, sir. If you could please enter your PIN. And how much will you be transferring?"
Jiang He keyed in his PIN on the pad and simultaneously took a slip of paper with account numbers written on it from his pocket. He pushed it toward the teller. "Two separate transfers."
The teller casually glanced down at the account information that had just loaded on her screen.
’Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions...’
She froze.
On the screen, the available balance was clearly displayed: 2,000,126.12!
Her head snapped up, and she stared at Jiang He in disbelief.
’What is going on?’
’Two million in cash just sitting in a debit account?’
’What kind of person does that? Has he never heard of investing? Why not just buy a couple of apartments?’
Despite her inner thoughts, her expression became even more enthusiastic.
"Right away, sir! How would you like to split... these two transfers?"
Jiang He said, "The first transfer, for five hundred and fifty thousand, goes to this Agricultural Bank account."
Shen Yu: "Hm?"
’Five hundred and fifty thousand? Did I hear that right?’
Shen Yu watched the teller, who simply nodded without questioning the amount.
She was stunned.
She was so shocked she felt like she could cry.
In any case, the account Jiang He was transferring to belonged to his parents.
Now that he had money, it was only natural to help his parents improve their quality of life.
The source of the funds was also easy to explain.
He would just say that the money he’d borrowed from them for his research had paid off, and this was his profit.
His parents didn’t really understand scientific research anyway. If they pressed him, he could just send them his LNR paper.
They’d probably see his name listed as the first author and believe him.
"The second transfer is to this Construction Bank account. The amount is... fifty-two thousand yuan."
This account belonged to Chen Hao.
Ever since the emergency at the internet cafe, Chen Hao had become Jiang He’s de facto "godfather" (i.e., his personal ATM).
Meals, taxis, research materials, the down jacket for his girlfriend, round-trip plane tickets to the Capital City—Chen Hao had paid for it all.
Chen Hao had paid for everything willingly, but Jiang He had kept a record of every single expense.
All told, the expenses came to twenty-six thousand.
Now, he was paying it all back in one go.
Well, double, actually.
"Of course, sir. Please wait just a moment while I process this for you."
The teller’s attitude was now even more deferential. Taking his ID with both hands, she practically jogged off to process the transaction.
Meanwhile, Shen Yu was stealthily observing Jiang He.
To be honest, she didn’t care whether Jiang He was rich or poor. Seeing how wealthy he was now, she was mostly just curious.
’Where did all this money come from? It’s incredible.’
Then her thoughts turned to the matter of that so-called "Dahe Digest."
She was sure of it now.
That digest was definitely something Jiang He had made up. He’d even used his own name.
Dahe Digest? More like *Jiang He* Digest!
The whole point of that charade was just to find a way to give her money!
Shen Yu was deeply indignant that she’d been tricked, and seeing how rich Jiang He was now only intensified her indignation.
’I’ll have to put him in his place!’ she thought.
’On our date this afternoon... er, I mean, our shopping trip.’
’Whatever it is, I have to get him back for this.’
’I’ll show him I’m not that easy to push around!’
It was like that classic line from the Calabash Brothers cartoon:
’My head isn’t made of dough!’
