Chapter 392 - 256: Why Don’t These Rewards Ever End?
Jiang He: "Mm, okay."
Cheng Xiyao, however, perked up and joked, "Boss, seriously, if it weren’t for Teacher Shen, I’d totally start going after you."
Jiang He sighed. "Don’t."
Chen Hao: "Make."
Lu Xiaolin: "Your."
Yi Xiangwan: "Sister."
Tang Pei: "Yu."
Cai Zhuoqun: "Laugh."
Zhou Yang: "Now."
After they finished, everyone looked at Lin Yue in unison.
Lin Yue nodded. "Indeed."
After she spoke, the private room fell silent for a second before everyone erupted in laughter.
Director Yang Xu and Professor Wang Xiaoqing couldn’t help but shake their heads as they laughed.
This inside joke had a whole backstory within the project team.
Once, after an experiment had finished, Jiang He treated everyone to a late-night meal.
During the meal, Yi Xiangwan started gossiping, "Boss, what if right now, a super beautiful girl with a great personality from a rich family started chasing you like crazy, bringing you food every day and staying up all night with you? What would you do? Would you say yes?"
Jiang He had replied in a flat tone, "Don’t make Sister Yu laugh."
Everyone thought the line was so cool, and such a savage takedown of all the single people, that they added it to the team’s collection of inside jokes.
From then on, whenever someone made that kind of joke in front of Jiang He, as soon as he said the word "Don’t," the entire project team would automatically start a word chain to finish the sentence.
Cheng Xiyao put her hands on her hips. "Hey, hey, hey, I was just kidding, okay! I was just trying to fully express my admiration for the Boss! Pure admiration! Academic reverence! I’d say the same thing even if Teacher Shen were sitting right here!"
Chen Hao said, "We get it, we get it. Why don’t you eat something, our great Department Belle? I think you’re so hungry you’re starting to hallucinate."
Cheng Xiyao clicked her tongue and shot Chen Hao a glare.
’Actually, the only reason she dared to make a joke like that in front of the whole team was because she had already let go of her feelings for him.’
’Besides running epidemiological surveys and doing experiments, she didn’t seem to have any interest in things like dating anymore...’
’Occasionally, thoughts about a future partner would flash through her mind.’
’Her thinking was: When I look for a partner in the future, shouldn’t I at least look for someone based on the Boss’s template?’
’I’m not asking for the Boss’s level of genius, but they should at least have half his sense of responsibility, half his academic vision, and half his diligence.’
’Ugh, but could I even find someone like that?’
’Why do I feel like I’m going to be single forever?’
But upon reaching this conclusion, Cheng Xiyao didn’t feel any sense of loss.
’Single forever it is, then. Spending a lifetime running experiments sounds pretty good, too.’
She had gained an unprecedented sense of accomplishment from the cervical erosion project.
This feeling of self-actualization was far more romantic than any fleeting affair.
Just a few days ago, she had submitted her application to join the Party.
Her goal had also become singular: to become an outstanding scholar like the Boss, someone who could advance the nation’s scientific progress.
Even if her own talent was limited and she could only push things forward a tiny bit, that was still a cause worth dedicating her life to.
In fact, it wasn’t just Cheng Xiyao.
One only had to shift their perspective slightly and look at the people sitting around the table.
Chen Hao, formerly a "Warcraft Battle God," was now painstakingly researching the field of pneumothorax, running to the emergency department every day. For the sake of an early screening project, he could even work in the lab for days and nights on end without sleep.
Yi Xiangwan, who once had low self-esteem, now held her head high with confidence.
Although she still loved telling terrible dwarf jokes, her main goal was no longer self-deprecation but rather to piss off Gu Yizhou... damn, she was mean.
Cai Zhuoqun, Lu Xiaolin, and Tang Pei had also become even more respectable.
As the core of the team, Jiang He didn’t just have outstanding academic abilities; he led by example. Through his own hard work, he had become an incredible role model for this group of medical students.
When you follow someone like that, it’s hard not to become excellent yourself.
This is how the youth of our generation should be.
Halfway through the meal, Jiang He asked Chen Hao, "Haozi, where’s Gu Yizhou? Why didn’t he come?"
Chen Hao hesitated, looking like he wanted to say something but was holding back.
Jiang He frowned. "What’s going on?"
Chen Hao thought for a moment, then decided to just say it.
He said, "Boss, actually... Gu Yizhou’s girlfriend’s condition has gotten worse recently."
Jiang He was taken aback for a moment.
He remembered Gu Yizhou’s girlfriend. She had been admitted to the ICU with a severe infection, and he and Yang Xu had worked together to pull her back from death’s door.
Her recovery had been slow afterward, but she had been improving overall.
"How could she suddenly get worse?" Jiang He asked.
"Her underlying health is too poor. It led to a severe secondary pulmonary infection, and she was transferred back to the ICU a couple of days ago. Her condition is very unstable."
Jiang He recalled, "But I saw him when he came to pick me up at the airport."
"Yeah, when he heard you were returning to the country, he still made time to go to the airport. But right after seeing you, he hailed a cab straight back to Affiliated Hospital No. 1."
"Why didn’t he tell me?"
"How could he dare tell you? Boss, you were in the United States winning glory for our country. Gu Yizhou told us that we absolutely couldn’t tell you, no matter what. He was afraid it would affect your work there. He said your energy should be focused on things that could save more people..."
Jiang He fell silent.
’An image of Gu Yizhou at Baiyun Airport surfaced in his mind, standing at the edge of the crowd.’
’He had been silent the whole time, just clapping along with everyone else. His eyes were filled with exhaustion, yet he had forced himself to smile.’
’I was surrounded by my parents and the hospital leadership back then. I can’t believe I didn’t notice something was wrong with him.’
’I just thought he was being his usual quiet self and didn’t think anything of it.’
"I see..." Jiang He murmured softly.
Medicine was like that.
One moment, you could be celebrating conquering some world-class problem.
The next, reality would throw the raw, bloody cycle of life, aging, sickness, and death in your face, reminding you just how fragile humanity still was in the face of disease.
