Chapter 980 - 475: Mission: Impossible
In the mountains and forests, numerous monsters were either actively lying in ambush or had wandered in by mistake after getting lost during the war. Regardless of how they got there, many had already quietly taken root along the human defense line. If they weren’t cleared out regularly and their numbers were allowed to grow, a dangerous scenario could unfold: under the command of a monster boss, they might flank the human legions from the sides and rear while the humans were occupied fighting the Green Dragon Army on the front lines.
"You may go now.
"If you encounter any danger you cannot handle, send up a signal flare immediately.
"The area you’ll be patrolling isn’t far from here, so I can arrive quickly to back you up," Gauss instructed.
Of course, it was highly likely they wouldn’t need him. After all, Luna, Aaliyah, and the rest of the team were no pushovers. As long as they didn’t encounter an Extraordinary Demon, nothing could threaten the current Red Dragon Team.
After giving his orders, Gauss watched the mighty Red Dragon Team march out through the side gate. It gave him a strong sense of déjà vu, reminding him of dispatching characters on resource-gathering expeditions in mobile games from his previous life. Strictly speaking, it was a perfectly accurate analogy. Their excursion would indeed sweep up some resources for him, as well as rack up his monster kill count.
"What should I do next?" Gauss murmured, looking up at the sky.
Compared to yesterday, today’s weather was exceptionally clear. The sky was a pristine, cloudless blue. If they weren’t in the middle of a war, it would actually be a perfect day for camping, or for taking a commission out in the countryside to wipe out goblins.
"Perhaps I should find an area nearby and hunt for wild Demons myself?" he thought.
Today, there were no signs of any large-scale movements from the Green Dragon Army. This was actually quite easy to understand. Humans weren’t the only ones who felt fatigue; Demons were made of flesh and blood as well. While most of them possessed stronger physical constitutions than humans of the same tier, they were the ones initiating the attacks. Both advancing and retreating required them to travel much longer distances. Therefore, after every large-scale assault, they usually needed a day or two to rest and regroup.
Yesterday’s battle had actually been quite sudden, likely triggered by Gauss’s appearance on the front lines. It was a general offensive launched to coordinate with the Extraordinary Centaur’s assassination attempt. Now that the operation had failed, the Green Dragon Army would probably retreat to reorganize, reflect on their losses, and plan their next move.
Just as Gauss slowly ascended into the air, floating high above to survey the surrounding area, a few Griffin Knights flew over to him.
"Lord Gauss, please wait. Lord Xavier requests your presence," one of them called out respectfully.
Gauss glanced at the standardized armor with light blue patterns they were all wearing and instantly recognized them as soldiers from Farlim’s Iron Guard Knight Order. Although the Iron Guard Knight Order was primarily a land-based army, it was also equipped with a small number of aerial cavalry troops.
His expression remained unchanged, but he felt somewhat puzzled. He had chatted with President Monroe during his entire journey back yesterday, and during their conversation, he had explicitly expressed his wish that factions like the Xavier family and the Brenan Clan wouldn’t bother him too much. He didn’t need any financial backing, political marriages, or any other form of alliance. Logically speaking, since the bearded president had a good personal relationship with the commander of the Iron Guard Knight Order, he should have conveyed Gauss’s intentions to them.
However, since the other party had taken the initiative to send someone, he decided to go and see what was going on. It was highly likely to be official business. If it turned out to be more trivial nonsense, he wouldn’t show them much courtesy this time, especially since he had already made his stance clear.
In the past, he might have been somewhat wary of the Xavier family, but today, he was no longer just a mere genius. His current strength was more than enough to allow him to act as he pleased. Even a border Earl couldn’t easily manipulate a powerful Extraordinary tier expert.
