I Am Zeus

Chapter 352: The Citadel Rising 2

Golden light poured through the breach in a continuous flood.

The Citadel was no longer a half-formed idea. Walls of burning scripture climbed higher with every soul the Remnant claimed, pillars of forced prayer locking into place like the bones of a new Heaven. Angels moved in perfect, merciless rhythm, chaining the newly freed dead and feeding them into the structure. The air itself tasted of metal and old hymns.

Hades did not wait for a plan.

He launched himself upward in a storm of black and green, shadows tearing free from his body and slamming into the rising walls. Where his power struck, the golden surface cracked and bled light. Persephone’s energy raced through the shadows like living fire, turning every impact into a bloom of thorns and roots that tried to drag the structure down. The Citadel groaned but kept growing.

Zeus hit the other side at the same moment. Lightning exploded from his fists in tight, brutal arcs that shattered entire sections of wall. Angels screamed as their formations broke. He moved like a man who had already decided the cost did not matter. Every bolt he threw cost him more of the sky’s authority, and he threw them anyway.

"Focus on the base!" Zeus shouted over the chaos. "If the foundation falls, the rest comes with it!"

Hades heard him and changed direction mid-air. He dropped hard onto the lower tier of the Citadel, both hands slamming into the glowing stone. Green light and pure death poured out of him in a single, reckless surge. The foundation cracked from end to end. Souls that had been locked into the walls tore free in screaming streams, some flying upward toward freedom, others collapsing into the transforming fields below.

The Metatron-avatar turned its empty eyes on him.

"You still do not understand," the avatar said, voice calm even as the structure around it shuddered. "Order does not negotiate. It simply replaces what fails."

It raised one hand. A spear of pure scripture formed and shot toward Hades’ chest.

Persephone intercepted it.

She appeared between them in a burst of spring light, both hands catching the spear. The holy weapon burned her palms, but she held on, green energy racing up the shaft and shattering it into harmless sparks. For a moment she stood fully solid, eyes bright with fury and love in equal measure.

"You will not take him," she said.

The avatar tilted its head, almost curious. Then it moved.

What followed was not elegant. It was raw, close, and ugly.

Hades and Persephone fought side by side against the avatar while Zeus tore through the angel ranks trying to keep the Citadel from repairing itself. Every time a section of wall fell, new angels arrived to rebuild it with fresh souls. The battlefield became a storm of gold, black, and green. Flowers bloomed and died in seconds. Lightning scorched scripture into ash. Shadows dragged screaming angels into the dark only for more to take their place.

Hades felt the change inside himself accelerating. Every soul he freed left a hollow space that Persephone’s light rushed to fill. The green veins across his body spread further, climbing his neck, branching across his face. The pain was constant now, a deep, grinding ache that came with every heartbeat. He was becoming something new whether he wanted it or not.

A massive angel, larger than the others, broke through Zeus’ defense and drove a blade of pure light into Hades’ side.

He staggered. Black and green ichor spilled across the golden stone. The avatar seized the opening and slammed a wave of force into him, sending him crashing into the unfinished wall of the Citadel. The impact drove several claimed souls deeper into the structure. Hades felt each one lock into place like nails being driven into his own bones.

Zeus roared and abandoned the upper defenses. He hit the avatar with everything he had left, a concentrated blast of sky-fire that cracked the creature’s form and forced it backward. The two of them slammed into each other in mid-air, lightning and scripture colliding in a shockwave that flattened everything nearby.

"Get him out of there!" Zeus shouted to Persephone.

She was already moving.

She reached Hades as he pushed himself up from the cracked wall, one hand pressed to the wound in his side. Green light leaked between his fingers. Her expression was fierce and terrified at once.

"You’re pushing too far," she said.

"If we stop now, that thing finishes," Hades answered through gritted teeth. "I can feel it. One more push."

He looked at her, then at Zeus still locked in combat above them.

"Help me end this."

Persephone nodded once.

They moved together.

Hades poured every remaining fragment of his power into the foundation of the Citadel while Persephone flooded the structure with pure spring force. Roots thicker than ancient trees erupted from the Underworld itself and wrapped around the golden walls, crushing, pulling, tearing. Zeus abandoned his duel long enough to drive a final, massive bolt of lightning into the highest tower.

The Citadel screamed.

Cracks raced across every surface. Claimed souls tore free in chaotic waves. Angels fell by the dozens as the structure lost cohesion. For one long, suspended moment it looked like the entire thing would collapse into nothing.

Then the avatar did something new.

It stopped fighting Zeus and turned all of its remaining power inward. The damaged Citadel began to compress, pulling the remaining walls and pillars into a single, dense core of golden light. The avatar wrapped itself around that core like a shell.

"You cannot destroy what you do not understand," it said. "You have only taught us how to adapt."

The compressed core pulsed once.

A wave of pure, ordered force exploded outward.

Hades and Persephone were thrown across the battlefield. Zeus was driven to one knee, lightning flickering weakly around him. The remaining free souls scattered in panic. The transformed fields of the Underworld withered in a wide circle.

When the light faded, the Citadel was gone.

In its place floated a single, perfect sphere of golden light no larger than a man’s head. The Metatron-avatar held it carefully, almost tenderly.

"This is enough," it said. "For now."

It turned and rose toward the breach, the sphere cradled in its hands. The remaining angels followed in tight formation. They did not look back.

Hades tried to stand and failed. Persephone caught him before he hit the ground. Zeus staggered over to them, one arm hanging uselessly, blood running from a deep cut across his brow.

The three of them watched the Remnant retreat through the breach, carrying the compressed heart of the Citadel with them.

The immediate threat was gone.

What they had left behind was worse.

The Underworld was permanently altered. Hundreds of souls were free. Hundreds more had been claimed. And the Remnant now possessed a concentrated seed of pure order that could be planted anywhere.

Hades looked down at his own hands. The green light under his skin was brighter than ever. The wound in his side still bled, but the blood was no longer fully black.

Something irreversible had begun.

Zeus wiped blood from his eyes and stared at the empty breach.

"They’ll be back," he said quietly.

Persephone held Hades tighter.

"Yes," she answered. "And next time they will not need a Citadel."
