Chapter 517: A Mere 150,000 Taels
When Gu Yuan heard the little girl’s soft laughter, he felt a hint of displeasure.
"Miss Xiang, are you really in a position to pawn so many things?"
’This was 150,000 taels’ worth of goods. He himself wouldn’t dare act rashly, so how could a little girl call the shots?’
"Heh." Ye Qianning chuckled again.
Gu Yuan was very displeased. "What are you laughing at, Miss Xiang?"
"It’s merely 150,000 taels," the childish voice replied, tinged with both amusement and disdain.
Her attitude alone was enough to make Gu Yuan look like a fool.
An awkward expression crossed Gu Yuan’s face. He was unwilling to let go of so many fine goods, but 150,000 taels was a bit beyond his means.
"Husband, don’t listen to her nonsense. Even if they’re valuable, they can’t be worth that much," Gao Yunyue said, clutching his arm.
Having seen a great many treasures in the Gu family, Gu Yuan knew these were all fine items. The bracelet, in particular, was clearly of the highest quality even from a distance, though he hadn’t examined it closely.
He wasn’t sure of the exact price, but he didn’t dare make a unilateral decision on 150,000 taels.
"Move aside," Luo Wen snapped again.
Gu Yuan remained motionless, his eyes lowered in thought.
"Husband." Gao Yunyue tugged at him, but he didn’t budge. She shot a fierce glare at Ye Qianning, then looked up and whispered to him, "Husband, that little girl is a pathological liar. How could the General’s estate have so many treasures? She must be trying to scam us."
Hearing this, Ye Qianning’s lips curled into a smile she couldn’t suppress.
’It’s only been a few days, but Gao Yunyue has toned down her brash nature considerably. In front of the person she likes, even the most uncivilized person can become reserved and proper.’
"Miss Xiang, how about you wait one day? I’ll go back and ask my father, then decide whether to accept your offer," Gu Yuan said after much thought, looking up.
Ye Qianning chuckled and shook her head. "Mr. Gu, perhaps you should spend more time learning how to do business."
Obviously, that wasn’t an option. Business waits for no one!
Besides, her good mood was ruined. Even if they offered 200,000 taels, she wouldn’t pawn the items anymore.
The Shopkeeper, standing to the side, had long since realized the deal was dead. ’A huge transaction, completely ruined by them. Offering a mere 10,000 taels for so many high-quality goods? Hah! If he weren’t a young master of the Gu family and the new boss, I’d suspect he was some poor country bumpkin who’s never seen anything of the world.’
"Well now, what’s going on here?" a voice called out.
The Gu family’s First Master, Gu Zhifeng, emerged from the crowd, followed by his second son, Gu Chi, who was dressed in blue.
Gu Yuan’s expression soured when he saw them. He turned and said, "First Uncle, you’re here..."
Before he could finish, Gu Zhifeng brushed past him and went straight to Ye Qianning’s carriage. The corner of Gu Yuan’s mouth twitched. He swallowed his words and turned to watch.
"Miss Xiang, we haven’t seen you in days! You look taller, a bit slimmer, and even more beautiful," Gu Zhifeng greeted her with cupped hands, beaming.
"...Old Master Gu," Ye Qianning returned the greeting politely.
"It’s fine for outsiders to call me that, but how can you be so formal?" Gu Zhifeng said with a laugh, feigning displeasure.
"Then what should I call you?"
"The Old Master has recognized you as his great-granddaughter. According to our family hierarchy, you should call me First Uncle..." Gu Zhifeng began, but when he saw the little girl’s brow furrow slightly, he faltered.
First Uncle?
Ye Qianning’s frown deepened. "First Uncle? That doesn’t sound as nice as ’Mr. Gu’."
"Er... I meant Great-Uncle," Gu Zhifeng corrected himself.
Gu Chi lightly touched his forehead, looking somewhat exasperated.
Gu Yuan was even more displeased. He moved closer to Gu Chi and asked, "What are you two doing here?"
"We were inspecting the shops and just passing by," Gu Chi said.
