Chapter 457 - 381: Plan No. 3: Level 1 Alert
Breach the city!
How difficult a task was that?
The City of Hope was the last bastion of the Human Alliance. Every one of its gates was defended by a massive garrison and ultra-heavy weaponry. Even the Alien Race Alliance Army couldn’t easily breach its defenses.
Gao Xiaomeng knew all of this.
But she had no choice but to fight to the death.
"I will lead the Cat Race and establish our own nation! I know I can!" Gao Xiaomeng sprinted, racing toward the South District City Gate.
...
Night. Wind and snow were in the air.
The South District City Gate.
Guarded by the Southern Alliance Military District.
Amidst the lightly falling snow, heavy weapon emplacements lined the top of the gate. Each was capable of a full 360-degree rotation, targeting threats from both the air and the ground.
BEEP!
BEEP!
"Alert! Alert!"
"Level Three Alert! A large number of biological signatures detected swarming from inside the city! Level Three Alert! A large number of biological signatures detected swarming from inside the city..."
The alarm blared.
A Level Three Alert signified an internal security threat. Though not as urgent as Level One, droves of soldiers still poured out of the barracks the moment the alarm sounded.
"Thirteenth Battalion, reinforce the gate guard!"
"Yes, sir!"
"First through Tenth Battalions, you’re on internal lockdown duty!"
"Understood!"
"All other units, to the gate wall! Take up external defensive positions! Watch for alien sneak attacks!"
"Yes, sir!"
A cordon was quickly established at the city gate, with several thousand soldiers forming two lines. Each soldier was equipped with both melee weapons and firearms.
Atop a five-story building.
Gao Xiaomeng stood at the building’s edge. Behind her stood thirty members of the Cat Race in human form, every one of them with a reverent expression.
"My Queen, we’ve been discovered!" one of the Cat Race members said.
"Mm, yes... We have been discovered. The City of Hope is certainly different from the Forgotten Land." Gao Xiaomeng nodded, a faint light glimmering in her deep blue eyes.
"What should we do?"
"Relay my orders. Execute Plan Three."
"Yes, My Queen!"
Ten of the thirty Cat Race members quickly departed.
「Ten minutes later.」
More than two hundred stray cats appeared at the city gate. They crawled out from sewer grates, squabbling over scraps of food and letting out a chorus of meows.
MEOW.
MEOW MEOW MEOW!
...
The guards were all taken aback.
Where did so many stray cats come from?
Could the detected threat just be this horde of stray cats? That didn’t seem right.
"Send some men to drive those cats away!" An order was quickly issued, and a squad of soldiers began shooing the strays.
But soon after, another clowder of cats appeared in a different spot.
This happened more than a dozen times, becoming a real headache for the thousands of soldiers. Some began to sense that something was off. These cats were behaving too strangely.
"These strays are a real pain! We can’t get rid of them!"
"Order: Use weapons if necessary. Make an example of one to scare the rest!"
BANG!
A gunshot rang out.
A stray cat fell to the ground.
The other strays froze for a moment, then began to scatter frantically.
Strangely, however, as the cats scattered in a panic, the body of the one that had fallen was dragged away by the others until it was out of sight.
"Something’s wrong. There’s something wrong with these cats!"
BEEP!
BEEP!
"Alert! Level Two Alert! The city gate is under attack! Alert! Level Two Alert! The city gate is under attack!"
"What?!"
"Quick, reinforce the gate!"
The soldiers began moving in orderly waves to reinforce the gate, simultaneously tightening the defensive perimeter around it, ready for any sudden developments.
But soon, the alert level was raised again.
"Alert! Level One Alert! Alert! Level One Alert!"
"Level One Alert?!"
"Damn it, something’s happened at the gate!"
The soldiers knew exactly what a Level One Alert meant.
There were only two possibilities: either the Alien Race Alliance Army was at their doorstep, or the gate had been breached.
And right now, there wasn’t a trace of the Alien Race Alliance Army outside the city. That left only one possibility: the South District City Gate had fallen.
And in fact, the South District City Gate had indeed been compromised.
But it wasn’t forcibly breached. It was because the main computer control room for the South District City Gate had been overrun by a horde of stray cats.
The cats had crawled out of various ventilation ducts, directly attacked the researchers in the main computer control room, and then forced the gate open.
BEEP!
BEEP!
Alarms blared from all directions.
The South District City Gate descended into chaos.
Countless stray cats poured madly from underground passages, then surged like a tide through the open gate.
The soldiers guarding the gate were utterly stunned.
They could see that these cats were incredibly disciplined, but no matter what, they were still just stray cats.
Most importantly, the cats showed no intention of attacking them.
The strays were only sprinting for the outside.
"What do we do? Do we shoot them or not?!"
"They’re just cats!"
"The gate opened on its own! Something big has happened!"
"Captain, make the call!"
"Requesting orders! Requesting orders! A large number of strays are pouring out of the city! They aren’t attacking us! Requesting permission to open fire! Requesting permission to open fire!"
"I repeat, they are showing no aggression as they exit the gate!"
...
South District City Gate, Command Center.
"Calling Command! The gate’s main computer control room has been completely wrecked by the cats! The cats have been driven out, but it’ll take at least half an hour to get the system running again! The gate will remain open for that entire time!"
"Command, a large number of strays are using the open gate to escape the city. They haven’t attacked us. Requesting orders on whether to open fire and kill them!"
