Chapter 240 - 150: Gu Nan: Can’t You Let Me Play My Part?
"Wow, what a huge lobster! Brother-in-law, I want this one!" Yi Miaomiao had a lively personality and was the most pampered at home, so she didn’t know what it meant to hold back.
Seeing so many unfamiliar fish, shrimp, and crabs in the seafood shop, she felt like she’d walked into an aquarium.
But after looking around, she ultimately settled on a half-meter-long Rose Dragon lobster.
The young girl might have been forward, but she wasn’t so shameless as to order everything in sight. By picking just one thing, she showed she still knew her limits.
Yi Dongxue, being a bit older and more sensible, knew that everything in a high-end seafood shop was expensive. Consequently, she was too embarrassed to pick something out like her sister.
"Dongxue, aren’t you going to pick something?" Gu Nan asked, noticing his sister-in-law standing quietly to the side, curiously looking around.
"No, no, I’m fine. There’s nothing I’m particularly craving," Yi Dongxue said, shaking her head repeatedly.
Gu Nan could tell she was just being shy. He smiled and said, "Since we’re having lobster, let’s add a big crab to the mix! Chenchen, grab a Tai Star Garoupa as well. That’s what we’ll have for our late-night meal."
Yi Chen knew what he was like. Though the expense pained her, she shot him a look before doing as he asked.
After treating his two sisters-in-law to a grand late-night feast and raising their affection for him by at least 80%, Gu Nan finally took them home.
Through their casual conversation that evening, he gained a clearer picture of Yi Chen’s family situation.
Perhaps because Yi Linfei only had daughters, Yi Chen wasn’t particularly close with her paternal family, but there was no real animosity or resentment either.
It was mainly during her rebellious phase that she’d driven Yi Linfei half-mad. He wanted his daughter to behave and not cause trouble, while she desperately wanted more of her father’s attention. Since neither got what they wanted, their relationship had soured.
Gu Nan had seen a bit of this dynamic for himself tonight.
The main issue was that his future father-in-law didn’t know how to show he cared and had a sharp tongue; his girlfriend was simply at odds with him over it.
Her stepmother was a savvy woman, and without a son of her own, she had no reason to play the villain. She was someone they could get along with.
However, while they were chatting over their meal, he sensed that Yi Chen’s relationship with her biological mother must be terrible—so bad that she didn’t even want to bring her up.
He sighed inwardly. ’For some reason, I have a feeling she’s going to cause trouble down the line.’
But it didn’t matter. Yi Chen was a clear-headed person. She had behaved herself tonight because Yi Linfei’s attitude had been good, and she didn’t want to jeopardize her own important plans.
He wouldn’t have much free time in the days following the fishing competition. For one thing, Gu Nan planned to take diving lessons with his girlfriend in the afternoons.
However, the diving instructor had been away on a business trip to Southern China during the competition and wouldn’t be back for another two days. This gave him the perfect opportunity to use up the daily chances that had been accumulating lately.
He hadn’t used any for several days, so including the ones from Seven-Star Rock, he had over two hundred accumulated.
But sometimes, things just don’t go as planned.
A little after ten in the morning, a wealthy-looking woman dressed head to toe in designer brands entered the shop. The sharp CLICK-CLACK-CLACK of her high heels echoed as she walked in, removed her sunglasses, and looked at Gu Nan with an unmistakably condescending air.
The woman wasn’t tall, but she had a commanding presence. Her figure was stunning—curvy in all the right places, a clear result of diligent maintenance.
But when Gu Nan saw her face, he froze. He shot Yi Chen a strange glance—sure enough, the resemblance was uncanny.
"What are you doing here?" Yi Chen frowned upon seeing the woman and stepped in front of Gu Nan, shielding him from the scrutinizing gaze.
She knew her father would tell her mother that she was in a relationship and even planning to marry, but she’d never expected the woman to show up at the shop directly.
"So this is your taste?" Shen Suping said, looking at her daughter as if to condemn her. "Selling fish here, reeking of fish all day? What was so wrong with the men I introduced to you? No matter how you look at it, any of them would be better than a fishmonger, wouldn’t they?"
Her expression was one of pure anger, clearly dissatisfied that her daughter had found a fishmonger for a boyfriend.

Gu Nan’s mouth fell open. He wanted to retort, ’What’s it to you if I sell fish? Am I living off your dime?’
But then he remembered that Yi Chen had, in fact, literally eaten her family’s rice, so he wisely kept his mouth shut.
Besides, he wanted to see how this would play out. This mother-daughter duo really didn’t get along, just as he’d suspected last night.
"What, you look down on fishmongers?" Yi Chen shot back. "This shop’s average daily revenue is several thousand. On days with a big hotel order, it can be over a hundred, even two hundred thousand. Besides, we’re about to open a new branch. In the future, he might not earn any less than that man of yours."
Yi Chen had shown her cute, feminine side to Gu Nan, and she’d shown her capable, supportive side too. But he had never seen her be this assertive.
"And what about that sorry bunch you introduced me to? They were all a good twelve years older than me! How dare you look down on my boyfriend? At least he’s a self-made man who built his own business from nothing."
Shen Suping looked astonished. She hadn’t expected a tiny seafood shop to be so profitable.
"So what? He still just sells fish. I introduced you to doctors, lawyers, men with stable government jobs... which one of them came from a bad background?"
Gu Nan couldn’t take it anymore. ’This damn future mother-in-law is a complete snob!’
She’d been looking down her nose at him from the moment she walked in. ’What’s her deal?’
But before he could retort, Yi Chen said coolly, "That husband of yours used to be a scrap collector, didn’t he? Your older son is only fifteen, and he already smokes and drinks. And your younger son may only be seven, but he’s a complete, ill-mannered brat."
"You should worry about how to raise those two precious sons of yours first! And stop putting in so much effort every day. You’re a woman in your forties. Who are you dressing up so flamboyantly for?"
