Chapter 70: Breaking Point

The Prime Zone was still dark when Holden returned.

He slipped through the front door and pulled off the gold mask, tucking it under his cloak. The Beast Gauntlet had done nothing to clear his head. His body felt fine.

But the hollow ache in his chest had only gotten worse.

Then he saw the light.

Maeve was still awake. She sat at the kitchen table with a candle burning beside her. Stacks of paper covered every inch of the surface. Notes. Reports. Handwritten documents with official seals.

She looked up when he entered.

Her eyes moved over him quickly. The torn cloak. The acid burns on his clothes.

She didn’t ask where he’d been.

"You need to sit down," she said. "And you need to read this right now."

Holden frowned. He walked to the table and dropped into the chair across from her. "What is all this?"

"I didn’t just buy alchemy tools with the Colosseum money." Maeve pushed her glasses up. "I bought access to something better. The city’s information broker network. It’s expensive, but it’s worth it."

She pulled a thick folder from under the stacks and slid it across the table. The cover was sealed with a wax stamp marked by a symbol Holden didn’t recognize.

"I had them investigate Lyra’s fiancé," Maeve said. "Lord Oscar of House Thorne. Third-year student. Royal bloodline. Rank 2, two-star prodigy."

Holden stared at the folder. "Why?"

"Because something about that arranged marriage felt wrong. Lyra was terrified, Holden. That’s not normal for a political alliance." Maeve’s voice was clear and certain. "So I did some research."

He opened the folder.

The first page was a formal portrait of a young man. Handsome. Sharp jawline. Blonde hair swept back perfectly. A smile that looked designed to impress.

Lord Oscar Thorne.

Holden turned to the next page.

His expression changed.

The file contained incident reports. Medical records. Testimonies from servants who’d been paid off to stay quiet. The information broker had gathered it all from hidden archives and bribed officials.

Oscar had been engaged three times before.

The first girl had been a minor noble’s daughter. The engagement lasted two months. She was returned to her family with her cultivation base completely destroyed. Her meridians had been shattered from the inside out. The official report called it a "training accident."

The second girl lasted about three months. She tried to flee the Thorne estate and was found unconscious in a gutter. Her arms were broken in fourteen places. She never spoke again.

The third girl didn’t survive.

The report used careful language. "Complications during discipline." "Unfortunate response to correctional measures." But between the lines, the truth was sickeningly clear.

Oscar enjoyed breaking people.

He liked taking strong, proud cultivators and slowly destroy their energy pathways. It was a game to him. A hobby. He used arranged marriages as cover to acquire victims, then spent months crippling them for his own amusement before discarding the wreckage.

The final page of the file contained a handwritten note from the information broker.

"Subject has expressed particular interest in his newest acquisition. States she has ’excellent meridian structure’ and ’will be his finest work yet.’ Engagement banquet is scheduled for tomorrow evening."

Holden’s hands stopped moving.

He read the note again. Then again. Then a third time.

Each time, the words burned deeper into his skull.

His finest work yet.

Lyra.

Something inside Holden’s chest cracked.

All his plans to stay safe and stay out of the spotlight were disappearing. He usually tried to be invisible and avoid trouble, but now those rules were burning away like paper on fire.

The thought of Oscar’s hands on Lyra. The thought of anyone hurting her. The thought of her standing in that banquet hall tomorrow night, alone, with a monster who planned to destroy her from the inside out.

A low sound escaped his throat.

Raw and guttural.

The air in the kitchen changed.

Crack!

Maeve jumped as one of the tea glasses on the table split down the middle. A thin line ran through the ceramic.

Then the second glass cracked.

Then the third.

The candle flame bent sideways, pushed by invisible pressure. The papers on the table rustled though no window was open. The Aegis Ward hummed louder, reacting to the energy pouring off Holden’s body.

Rank 2 killing intent.

He wasn’t doing it consciously. It was just leaking out of him, uncontrolled, driven by something deeper than technique or cultivation. Pure, focused rage given physical form.

Maeve’s eyes went wide. She’d felt his aura before, but never like this. Never this heavy. Never this dangerous.

"Holden," she said carefully.

He didn’t respond.

He was still staring at the file. At Oscar’s smiling portrait. At the records of three ruined lives.

"Where is the banquet?"

His voice came out low. Completely flat. There was no sarcasm in it. No dry humor. He asked a simple question, but his tone carried a terrifying promise of violence. It felt as if he were about to unleash a level of destruction that the kitchen had never witnessed before.

Maeve stared at him for a long moment.

Then, despite everything, she smiled.

it was the smile of a sister who had been waiting for her brother to wake up.

"The Sterling estate. Main ballroom. Tomorrow night at eight."

Holden closed the folder.

He set it on the table with deliberate care, as if any sudden movement might shatter something beyond repair.

"I’m not going in disguise," he said.

Maeve raised an eyebrow. "You are not?"

"No."

He stood up from the chair. The killing intent receded, pulled back under control, but the coldness in his eyes remained.

"I’m going as Holden Voss. Vespera’s disciple. The slum kid who won the freshman tournament. I’m going to walk through their front door in my elite uniform and I’m going to stand in the middle of their precious banquet."

He looked at Maeve.

"And I’m going to tear it to the ground."
