I Have a Task Log

Chapter 391 - 390: Preparation for the Mission

"Alright, what’s the mission this time?" Colin asked.

"To clear out a Kobold nest. For the specifics, please come with me," the Wood Elf said. "Since the target is located underground and it may be quite dangerous, we’ve prepared some supplies."

"Quite dangerous?"

"That’s right. Which means the reward will also be more generous. In addition to the supplies we’re providing, if you take care of the nest, half of all the treasure inside will be yours. Of course, we will also provide a fair bounty."

"Cough, cough!" "Cough, cough, cough!"

The sounds came from Kase and Dorn simultaneously. Colin, taking the hint perfectly, nodded and said, "We can leave right now."

After he spoke, the group followed the Wood Elf across several suspension bridges connecting the giant trees. They then descended from the trees and followed a natural forest path a short distance until they arrived before a particularly special, enormous tree.

It was a great oak tree with silver-gray leaves.

Carved into its massive trunk were Runes in the Elf Language that glowed with a faint blue light, seemingly warning off any ill-intentioned intruders.

At the base of the oak was a staircase formed from twisted roots, and at the top of the stairs was a doorway also made of roots.

Just as Colin and the others ascended the stairs and walked toward the door, a gentle breeze blew past.

Countless fallen leaves drifted down before their eyes on the wind, forcing them to squint.

When they opened their eyes again, a tall woman in a long robe had appeared before them.

The woman was quite beautiful, carrying herself with a mature air. Her skin had a faint yellow hue and looked like very smooth bark, while her hair and knee-length dress were both made of yellowed leaves.

’She must be a dryad,’ Colin thought.

Legend had it that dryads originated when the Gods punished fey creatures who fell in love with mortals by binding their souls to trees.

Whether this legend was true or not, the vast majority of dryads were kind-hearted by nature and held absolute animosity toward any evil creature that sought to harm the forest.

"Greetings, Mother of the Oak." The Wood Elf stepped forward and bowed.

"Complete your task, Elf," the dryad known as the Mother of the Oak said with a nod.

The Wood Elf then led the others behind him toward the oaken doorway.

As he walked past the dryad, Colin suddenly felt her eyes fixed on him. But when he glanced back, he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary and wondered if he had imagined it.

The group entered the oaken doorway and descended a spiral staircase into a cellar.

The space here was quite large.

The oak’s roots twisted and tangled together, forming shelves that held Scrolls and Potions. There were so many Scrolls and Potions that the entire cellar resembled an ancient library, filled with them everywhere.

Colin gave a quick glance and saw that there were even several Magic Scrolls of the seventh tier and above on the shelves.

The group walked to a table in the center of the cellar and sat down, waiting as the Wood Elf selected Scrolls and Potions.

While they waited, Colin curiously sized up the fully-armed Elf Plate Armor Warriors standing in the corner.

The Plate Armor these Elves wore seemed to be made of more individual Armor Plates compared to the Plate Armor commonly seen in Thousand Masts City.

For example, their upper body Armor was constructed from seven Armor Plates: two for the Chest Armor, three for the abdomen, and one on each side of the abdomen. Elven skill had Forged the shape and size of these plates to perfection, making them look quite beautiful.

It was said that this design maximized the Armor’s flexibility, though he didn’t know if that was actually true.

Regardless, compared to the Elves’ magnificent Armor, Colin felt that his own set of mismatched Plate Armor looked a bit shabby.

THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD.

The Wood Elf placed four Potions on the table.

These Potions had a faint gray color—the Spiritual Light of the Transmutation System of Magic. The gray components within the liquid constantly gathered into a small sphere before dispersing again, returning the Potion to a uniform gray.

[Shrinking Potion / Rare Magic Potion]

[Shrink: The user’s height will be reduced to half of its original, and their weight to one-eighth of its original, for two hours. Under these effects, the user’s Power is -2 and agility is +2. Due to the smaller size, enemies have a -1 to their attack accuracy against the user.]

"Kobold caves are very narrow and full of traps. They are much more diligent than goblins, which makes them much more troublesome," the Wood Elf said. "With these Potions, you’ll be able to move around inside the Kobold burrows. That way, you can take out those little lizards hiding underground."

Colin glanced at the Potions on the table and said, "There are five of us."

"Don’t you have a Dwarf with you?" the Elf replied without a second thought.

This made Dorn, who was standing nearby, laugh in anger. He immediately cursed, "Eat shit, knife-ear."

"Brewing this type of Potion is not simple. If the all-Dwarf squad wasn’t already out on a mission, we wouldn’t have sent for you."

The Wood Elf continued, "In addition to this, each person will receive two Healing Potions, one Magic Scroll of [Detect Magic], and the materials needed to learn it. This will allow you to see any potential Magic traps."

"If you agree, you will have three hours to prepare. After three hours, please head to the Pegasus Stable. The mission can begin then."

’I didn’t expect to learn a new Magic spell just by taking a quest.’

’But since the Elves are willing to part with so many resources, this Kobold cave is probably not as simple as it sounds. We’re likely going to face some tough opponents this time.’

With these thoughts in mind, Colin gave a brisk nod.

After that, the Wood Elf spent a good while rummaging around with a great deal of CLINKING and CLANGING before finally handing everything over to the group.

Colin decided to start learning the Magic right there in the scroll repository.

Seeing this, the others also started busying themselves with their own things.

He was quite experienced with this sort of thing, and it only took him two hours to completely copy the Magic Model into his Spellbook.

[Detect Magic], a Tier One Magic, greatly enhances the Caster’s magical senses, allowing the Caster to detect the presence of Magic within a ten-meter radius for ten minutes. The Magic can penetrate most obstacles but can be blocked by wood, stone blocks, metal, and layers of lead.

Although experienced Mages can see the Spiritual Light of Magic, most magical traps have some form of camouflage.

This Magic enhances a Caster’s sensitivity to Magic, allowing them to discover such camouflaged magical traps.

After learning the Magic, Colin also put the Healing Potions from the Wood Elf into the pouch the Dwarf had given him, then tucked the tube away.

Once he was ready, he stood up and said to the others, "Let’s go. Time to move out!"
