Chapter 363 - 362: Promotion Banquet
Colin carefully sized the other man up.
The Paladin was wearing a leather overcoat and a black sweater today. His hair was slicked back with pomade, making him look quite formal.
"You’re right on time." Edwin smiled at them, then shouted at the noble-looking people down the street, "Ladies and gentlemen, do you need me to come over and get you?"
The two groups of people dressed as nobles, standing on opposite sides of the street, turned their heads and reluctantly walked over.
In addition to them, five men in City Watcher uniforms who had been drinking coffee by the roadside also came over.
And so, twenty-two people gathered around Edwin.
’I didn’t expect nobles to join the Field Staff,’ Colin thought to himself as he looked at the other teams. ’Looks like we’re the only "mud-legs" among these promotion squads.’
Seeing the others approach, the smile on the Paladin’s face faded a little. He looked somewhat serious, completely lacking the friendly demeanor he had when interacting with Colin and his team.
"Today is your promotion ceremony. It will be held in the office of the Master of the Black Tower. I hope you enjoy the journey ahead."
Edwin then said, "Alright, let’s head over."
’The Master of the Black Tower?’
Hearing this, Colin was slightly taken aback. ’Are we really going to meet this Legendary Figure from Thousand Masts City today?’
He glanced at the towering Black Tower and strode forward to follow Edwin.
As they walked, the members of the other teams were silent.
When they reached the gate of the Black Tower, Edwin stood still.
The people at the very front of the group walked straight toward the Black Tower’s outer wall and vanished the moment they touched it.
Kase muttered a couple of times upon seeing this.
He then whispered, "I’ll be damned."
"I pass through here every day. Relax, Kase," Colin said, then glanced at the others.
Ale and Dorn were relatively calm, but Orelia was so nervous she was frowning.
Then, a few people from the other teams kept looking over, somewhat puzzled.
’Maybe it’s because our team is the only one talking,’ Colin thought. ’Edwin seems especially serious today.’
When it was their team’s turn, Colin went to the front and led the way toward the Black Tower’s wall, guiding the others inside.
Edwin entered after them. The group took an elevator and arrived in a hallway.
During this time, the entire group remained silent. The two groups of nobles didn’t exchange a single word; they seemed more like enemies than strangers.
Kase and Orelia, on the other hand, were incredibly curious about the various magical sights inside the Black Tower and were constantly looking around.
Dorn and Ale were as unfazed as ever. The former, however, carried a Dwarf’s characteristic pride and discerning eye, while the latter looked as if she had seen it all before.
After a while, the group arrived at the door of a room with a sign that read "Black Tower Mage’s Office."
Arriving here, Colin couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nervousness.
In this world, besides Legendary Figures like Edwin, there were other powerhouses known as "Demigods."
This title didn’t mean they possessed the blood of a Deity, but that their power was sufficient to match any being beneath the Gods.
Every Master of the Black Tower in Thousand Masts City was the strongest Mage in the entire city, an absolute powerhouse who could be called a Demigod.
They could summon meteors from the starry sky, permanently alter a creature’s form, and travel freely between different worlds... ’What kind of person would they be? What would be on their mind?’
Colin swallowed, determined to push all these thoughts from his mind.
Edwin opened the wooden door.
Beyond the door was a large hall with a round table covered in a white tablecloth. A chandelier-style candelabra hung from the ceiling, filling the entire room with a warm glow. It looked nothing like an office.
At that moment, two figures stood just inside the doorway.
Colin looked up.
One was Morel, dressed in formal attire. The other must be the Master of the Black Tower.
Surprisingly, the Master of the Black Tower appeared to be a very young woman, looking only a year or two older than Colin.
She wore a form-fitting, high-collared, pure black Magic Robe. Two silver buttons cinched the cuffs. The garment was free of any excess folds or decorations, but one could tell at a glance that the robe was by no means cheap.
Perhaps because of the banquet, this Magic Robe was not a Magic Item.
"I’ve brought the candidates, Lady Tostin," Edwin said.
"So these are the best of the Field Staff. They certainly meet my expectations," a young woman’s voice reached their ears.
While the two were talking, Colin took another chance to study the Master of the Black Tower’s features.
The Mage had long, slightly curly red hair, most of which was pinned up, leaving only two curved strands to fall along the edges of her forehead. Her features were quite delicate, with a touch of baby fat that gave her an approachable air.
This was the current Master of the Black Tower, Asvir-Tostin.
"Alright, please, come in," said Asvir, the Master of the Black Tower. "If I were a newcomer, I certainly wouldn’t want to be left hanging in the hallway."
"Let’s start enjoying this dinner. I’m starving," Morel, who was standing nearby, said with a clap of his hands.
The members of the teams then walked into the hall.
Asvir, Edwin, and Morel sat at the head of the table.
The two noble teams immediately sat as far away from each other as possible, forcing Colin’s group and the other team in military uniforms to fill the gap between them.
After everyone was seated, Asvir snapped her fingers.
Immediately, a multitude of palm-sized wooden boxes appeared from all corners of the room, slowly floating through the air to hover in front of each team member.
"You four teams have, to date, rendered the most meritorious service among the Field Staff, and you are also the most trustworthy." Asvir stood up and spoke slowly. "I now officially authorize your promotion to Tier Three of the Field Staff: ’White Blade’."
Morel also stood up and added, "Your new Seal Rings are in the wooden boxes. Oh, and don’t forget to put your old ones back."
Colin and his team exchanged glances.
Seeing the members of the other teams begin to open their boxes and put on the rings, they reached out and opened the boxes before them.
The Seal Ring in the box was still made of pure silver, but its edges were now inlaid with gold. The face of the ring was still engraved with a robed figure, but now that figure also held a sword.
After taking off his own Seal Ring and placing it in the box, Colin put on the new one.
"Alright, the troublesome pleasantries are over," Asvir said with a nod. "Now, let the banquet begin."
