I Have a Task Log

Chapter 379 - 378: An Urgent Task

"I can cast magic while wearing Armor," Colin answered honestly.

"You can cast magic while wearing Armor, and Tier Three Magic at that? Forgive me, sir, but if I’m not mistaken, you appear to be a human in your early twenties."

The Wood Elf said, "This registration is a very serious matter. We use these forms to dispatch teams to dangerous areas. Overestimating your combat strength can lead to disastrous consequences. I trust I don’t need to emphasize that point, sir."

The sound of their conversation traveled, causing the other elves and the teams they were registering to look over.

’This guy is a real pain,’ Colin thought.

"Pardon my words, sir. You must understand, aside from the Silver Knights of the Silver Star Court, most city-states do not possess the methods to train Casters in Armor Techniques. Moreover, such training methods require a great deal of time, which short-lived humans rarely have..."

In his peripheral vision, Colin saw Edwin and an elf in a silver robe approaching.

Judging by the Wood Elf’s expression, though, Colin decided he wasn’t going to wait for others to come and mediate.

Colin said directly to the Wood Elf before him, "If you know any magic, just cast a spell of Tier Three or lower at me and you’ll see."

"What did you say?"

"Since you don’t believe my words, the best way is for you to experience it firsthand, isn’t it?"

The Wood Elf stared blankly for a moment, then began Casting and Spellcasting, likely preparing a harmless piece of Abjuration Magic.

Colin extended his palm toward the elf and recited a short spell.

The orderly fluctuations of the surrounding Magic Net were instantly hit by a shockwave, and the unfinished magic was snuffed out in its cradle.

The Wood Elf looked at his own palm in surprise, then raised his head to stare at the human before him in disbelief.

’Finally, some peace and quiet,’ Colin thought, letting out a sigh of relief.

"Hmph, a Counterspell. That guy kicked a hard rock buried in the snow." "Who’s that? From the Marine District?" "Must be the Wolf Hunters. I’ve heard of them. They just took care of White Frost not long ago. You guys remember, right? The giant bear over by Moss Stone Village."

The surrounding Adventurers murmured among themselves.

Colin glanced at Edwin. The Paladin smiled back at him, then immediately resumed his conversation with the Day Elf standing beside him. However, a silver-robed elf was still walking this way.

Kase snorted at the Wood Elf. "My tribe doesn’t treat friends like this, Elf."

"Surprised, little Elf Princess?" Dorn came forward, patted the small of Colin’s back, and taunted the Wood Elf. "This is human talent for you. In case you didn’t know, the shorter a race’s lifespan, the greater their innate talent. And this guy is one of the best among humans!"

Colin shot Dorn a look. Dwarves have shorter lifespans than elves, so Dorn was taking a subtle jab at the elf as well.

Just then, the silver-robed elf came over, patted the Wood Elf’s shoulder, and said something in the Elf Language. The latter immediately lowered his head.

Colin could faintly see the tips of the Wood Elf’s ears turning red.

"My sincerest apologies. Please continue with your report, Mr. Colin," the silver-robed elf said to Colin.

Colin nodded, taking the opportunity to look at the elf’s features as he spoke.

This Elf looked the most like Ale, with snow-white skin and beautiful features, but his hair was silver-white. He appeared to be a Moon Elf.

After the Moon Elf turned and left, Colin continued, "Alright, next are the spells I’ve learned. You can start writing them down..."

The talkative Wood Elf had fallen completely silent, merely recording the information on the paper without a word.

Because of the recent commotion, Colin’s group was the slowest of the dozen or so reporting teams. By the time they finished, most of the people around them had already started chatting idly.

Afterward, Edwin and the Day Elf called out to everyone.

The dozen or so teams were then led out of the hall. After crossing several tree-trunk corridors and suspension bridges, they arrived at another tree.

This tree was covered in small cabins grown from white living wood. The houses grew between the boughs, looking like oversized birds’ nests.

The distance between these cabins was quite significant, so the elves pointed them out one by one, assigning a cabin to each team.

Before long, lodging for the dozen or so teams had been assigned.

Colin and his party also grabbed their bags and crossed the walkway between the branches to their assigned room.

Just as Colin was using the key to open the wooden door, Kase clapped him on the shoulder and said, "Someone’s coming. I feel like something’s up."

He looked back and, sure enough, a Wood Elf was hurrying toward them.

Colin simply stopped what he was doing.

As the Wood Elf drew near, he spoke up: "Gentlemen and ladies, there is an urgent mission. Your team is the most suitable. Please come with me."

"Will we need to bring our luggage for this mission?" Colin asked.

Since they had all arrived via the Teleportation Array, their energy was still high. Taking on an urgent mission was no big deal.

"It’s just a short-range mission. The enemy numbers are high, so we need a team with more Casters." Though the Wood Elf was anxious, he spoke with great restraint. "You can leave your luggage here for now."

"Alright."

Colin turned, opened the door, and the group unceremoniously dumped all their non-essential luggage inside the room.

Afterward, they followed the Wood Elf along the tree-trunk corridors toward another large tree.

After passing a few more large trees, they once again arrived at a massive treetop plaza.

There were few branches above this plaza, making it one of the rare spots here where one could see the sun. At the same time, many stables were built around its perimeter.

The moment they arrived at the plaza, Kase immediately pointed at the stables and exclaimed, "Look, those horses have wings on their backs!"

And just as he said, the creatures being raised in those stables were not Ordinary horses, but pure white, twin-winged Pegasi.

Colin silently recalled information he had read before.

According to legend, creatures like the Pegasus lived on a plane called "The Unfettered Wilds" and were the mounts of the elven gods.

These flying creatures were faster and more stable than others like Griffins, hippogriffs, and drakes.

But their drawback was that they were a bit too intelligent and possessed a strong sense of justice.

Unless they were raised from a young age by a kind-hearted mortal, these creatures would rarely obey mortal commands. And even then, they were reluctant to undertake missions on a direct battlefield where they could easily be injured.

As Colin was lost in thought, the sound of clopping hooves approached from ahead.

He looked up to see three Pegasi had arrived before them.
