I Have a Task Log

Chapter 386 - 385: Weaving the Spider Web

With nothing much to do, Colin lay leisurely on the net, letting the cold wind blowing from all directions relax his tense body.

When he opened his eyes again, he noticed that Kase and Orelia were acting a bit strange.

The two of them were facing down, their arms and legs dangling through the mesh. They looked just like two squid caught in a Fishing Net, trying to escape.

Colin asked, "What are you two doing?"

"Feeling the wind," Kase said in a muffled voice.

"Lying prone like this makes it feel like we’re flying through the sky all by ourselves!" Orelia exclaimed. "You should hurry and try it, Mr. Colin!"

Colin said, "I’ll pass."

"You two look absolutely ridiculous," Dorn said.

Colin closed his eyes and dozed for a while longer.

When he opened his eyes again, Dorn had also stuck his arms and legs through the mesh. With his white beard flying about wildly, he looked rather bizarre. The three of them were just hanging there on the net.

"What’s with you now?" Colin asked.

"This is actually kind of fun," Dorn said with a chuckle.

"It just feels weird to me," Colin said, then silently closed his eyes and lay back down.

A moment later, his curiosity got the better of him. He copied the others and dangled himself from the net.

Looking at his dangling arms and legs, Colin was certain there was absolutely nothing special about this feeling.

He looked at Dorn and asked, "What’s the point of this?"

Hanging beside him, Dorn yawned and said, "There is no point. I just don’t want to look like an idiot."

"You’re a real scoundrel." Colin glanced at Kase and Orelia in the distance. The two of them had fallen asleep while dangling, looking quite peaceful.

He turned his head back and called out, "Ale, do you want to experience the feeling of flying?"

"I shouldn’t," Ale said sullenly.

"Alright then." Colin resignedly went back to dangling from the net and looking down. After hanging for a while, he did feel a hint of novelty—but only a hint.

The group returned to the platform, swaying like that.

Ignoring the strange looks from the onlookers, the group calmly extracted themselves from the net and headed back. They already drew enough attention as it was; a little more weirdness hardly mattered.

After asking the Wood Elf rider and getting an affirmative answer, Colin and the others returned to their own lodgings the same way they came.

The group opened the door again and looked inside.

The walls of the treehouse’s main hall looked the same as the outside, a structure of white, living wood. The floor was covered with a layer of green moss.

In the hall was a set of a table and chairs and a brick fireplace. A ceramic teapot sat on the mantelpiece, and a wooden jar was on a nearby shelf.

"Wow, it’s so beautiful..."

After Colin took a few steps into the room, Orelia’s voice immediately came from behind him. He turned to see the young girl excitedly pointing at his feet.

Looking down, he saw that the moss under his feet began to emit tiny glowing specks of light when stepped on.

Also, the floor felt quite soft to walk on, something that could be felt even through shoes.

The group members each went to one of the two doors, pushed them open, and took a look.

Both rooms inside the small treehouse were bedrooms with three vine hammocks each, and each was connected to a washroom.

What was rather magical was that the showerheads and faucets in the washrooms were inserted directly into the walls. Colin curiously picked at one and found that there seemed to be no pipes behind the faucet at all.

In other words, the water inside was released directly by this white, living wood, perhaps something like birch sap.

The three men and two women placed their luggage in their respective rooms and then returned to the main hall.

Ale skillfully went to the fireplace, took the teapot, filled it with some water, and began to heat it. At the same time, she picked up the wooden jar from the nearby shelf and started to prepare the tea leaves inside.

Colin and the others sat at the table, quietly waiting for the tea.

While spacing out, he decided he might as well check the mission rewards that had just come in.

First was one hundred and fifty Skill Level points.

Right now, his Armor Technique Skill Level was five hundred points away from the next stage. Considering the rarity of a Specialty, Colin directly added all the Skill Level points to his Armor: Empowerment Armor (Reliable) 1659/2000.

Because he had only gone through one battle, the Skill Levels for his other Skills hadn’t changed much.

Then there was the Tier Two [Web].

The instant the thought flashed through Colin’s mind, he blinked, and when he opened his eyes again, he found himself standing at the entrance of a cave. Looking back, he saw a vast, empty grassland stretching to the horizon.

’A classic Magic preview,’ Colin thought.

The next moment, he felt his body begin to move on its own.

A ball of white substance appeared in his right hand. A closer look revealed it to be like a spider’s web.

Colin could clearly see himself chanting a Spell while pinching the web with his ring and pinky fingers. Then, the tips of his other three fingers touched.

As the Spell was chanted, a bit of Arcane Radiance began to gather at the tips of the three fingers.

At the same time, a silver-gray light suddenly appeared inside the cave. The space around the light began to gradually distort and collapse inward.

Finally, his fingers splayed open.

The condensed ball of silver-gray light suddenly exploded, turning into countless white spider silks that shot out and stuck to the surrounding walls.

Silver-gray Spiritual Light usually represents Curse Magic.

’Based on what I’ve read in books, this type of Magic mainly involves summoning and Teleportation,’ Colin thought to himself. ’The principle behind this [Web] is to summon a spider web from who knows where.’

Having figured out the principle, Colin took a deep breath.

He found that when practicing and learning Magic, having a certain understanding of the Magic’s own Magic System and principles made it slightly easier to learn.

As Colin regained control of his body, the web inside the cave vanished instantly.

Colin mimicked the posture he had just been in, raising his right hand and aiming it at the cave’s interior.

The Casting process was quite smooth. The next moment, another white web exploded inside the cave.

After the successful cast, Colin could feel a faint, tenuous connection between his mind and the web. This Magic also required a bit of concentration to maintain.

After the successful Casting, the Magic’s effect immediately appeared before his eyes.

[Web], Tier Two Magic. Designate a point within a twenty-meter range. A web will shoot out from that point as a center, covering up to a seven-meter radius. The web will begin to burn upon contact with Flame. Creatures within the web’s area will take 2-8 Damage.

The effect of this Magic was basically the same as that of a giant spider’s web gland. It could create an obstacle and could also be used in combination with Flame Magic for an attack.

Colin glanced at the cave’s interior.

’It sticks to the walls when they’re present... but what happens when there are no walls?’
