Chapter 315: Interrogations, a Disguise That Wouldn’t Come Off, and Zorathys Is Likely Dead When Elyn Finds Him
Elyn’s POV
I swallowed.
Hard.
The water demon was sitting across from me, her dark wet hair plastered against her head, droplets of water still falling from her fingers and pooling on the desk between us. Her deep blue eyes were fixed on me with an expression that was somewhere between professional curiosity and something else entirely.
I hoped she wasn’t going to ask me about blowjobs anymore.
But here’s the thing: how was it that my luck was so bad that the same demon I had run away from was the same demon I had run into again? I had thought I was safe. I had thought I had escaped her. I had thought I would never have to see her face again.
And now she was sitting across from me, dripping water onto the desk, looking at me like I was the most interesting thing she had seen all night.
"What is her crime?" she asked.
The fire demon who had arrested me stood behind me, his flames still flickering along his shoulders. He looked at the water demon and spoke.
"She abducted children," he said, his voice flat and matter-of-fact.
The water demon’s eyebrow rose.
She turned to look at me, her gaze sweeping over my face, my clothes, my handcuffed wrists.
"Sit," she said.
I obeyed. It was better if I obeyed without complaint.
She waved a hand at the fire demon.
"I’ll handle it from here," she said.
The fire demon nodded once, then turned and left the office. The door closed behind him with a soft click, and suddenly I was alone with the water demon.
She stared at me.
I stared back.
"What’s your name?" she asked.
I hesitated.
"Elyn," I said.
She made a face.
"That’s the name of the Queen," she said. "No other demon bears that name. So you’d better speak the truth."
I sighed.
It was the truth. But I didn’t look like myself. I looked like a succubus. And no one in this realm was going to believe that a succubus — a random succubus in the streets — was actually the Queen.
"Elena," I said instead. "My name is Elena."
The demon frowned.
"I’ve never heard a name like that in the demon realm," she said. "But since you’re a succubus, I suppose it’s not surprising. You do have different naming conventions."
She leaned back in her chair, folding her hands on the desk in front of her.
"My name is Aquaria," she said. "And I’m going to ask you some questions. I want you to think carefully before you answer, because the crime of abducting children is very serious. The sentence is severe."
I nodded.
"I understand," I said.
"Did you abduct those children?"
I shook my head.
"No," I said. "I didn’t abduct anyone."
Aquaria’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"Are the children yours?" she asked.
I hesitated.
"No," I said. "They’re not mine. I’m just their guardian for the night. Their parents left them in my care."
Aquaria stared at me.
"Write down the names of the parents," she said, pushing a parchment and a quill across the desk toward me. "We’ll contact them and confirm whether what you’re saying is true."
I swallowed again.
Then I took the quill in my bound hands — it was awkward, the metal cuffs clinking against each other — and I wrote down the names of the dukes and duchesses.
I handed the parchment back to Aquaria, though I was a hundred percent certain she wouldn’t believe me.
She read it.
Then she looked at me.
Then she looked at the parchment again.
Then she looked at me.
"Do you take me for a fool?" she asked, her voice flat.
I sighed. There was no surprise there. She did not believe me.
"I’m not lying," I said. "You can reach out to them. They’ll confirm everything."
Aquaria shook her head.
"The dukes and duchesses don’t release their children to anyone," she said. "And besides, the children with you don’t look anything like the dukes’ and duchesses’ children. I’ve seen the noble children. I know what they look like."
"That’s because they’re in disguise," I said.
Aquaria stared at me.
"If they were in disguise," she said slowly, "we would have known the moment you stepped foot into the station. Our detection magic is strong. It would have seen through any disguise."
I sighed again.
"It’s not a lie," I said.
I was tired, and I swear I’ll kill Zorathys when I find him. His magic was so strong that mere detection magic would likely not work.
"I’m not lying," I repeated.
Aquaria didn’t look convinced.
"You know what, just speak with the children," I said. "If I really abducted them, they would tell you, right? Ask them questions. They’ll confirm everything."
Aquaria leaned back in her chair.
"The children are already being questioned," she said. "We’ll know soon whether you’re a criminal or not. And we’ll also know if you’ve used any brainwashing spells on them."
I groaned.
This was ridiculous.
I hadn’t abducted anyone. I hadn’t brainwashed anyone. I was just a human queen-to-be whose fiancé was currently missing, and the stupid bracelet he gave me for some reason could not detect him.
This would have been so much better if that lazy demon was here. And it was even more irritating because I knew he was likely sleeping somewhere.
Did I mention I was going to kill him when I found him? Because I was. I’d bury him myself too.
Minutes passed.
The silence stretched between Aquaria and me, thick and very uncomfortable. I could hear the distant sounds of the station — voices, footsteps, the occasional clang of a cell door.
Then Aquaria leaned forward.
Her eyes glinted with something that made my stomach drop.
"Since we’re waiting," she said, her voice dropping into that same conspiratorial tone she had used earlier in the street, "why don’t you tell me more about sex?"
I blinked.
"What?"
"I’m really interested in it," she said. "The techniques, the positions, the... everything. You know what I mean."
I stared at her for a while when I suddenly had a thought.
"If I tell you," I said slowly, "will you let me go?"
