Chapter 204: Wine, Winks, and Wicked Tails

Elyn’s POV

The hall seemed almost to hold its breath as Seraphielle bowed deeply before us. The movement, deliberate and exaggerated, had the unfortunate—or perhaps perfectly intended—side effect of pushing her cleavage forward in a way that looked perilously close to spilling over the edge of her purple gown. A faint, shimmering fabric clung tightly to her figure, emphasizing every curve, and the slit along her side suggested a subtle rebellion against formal dress codes. Her violet silk bodice gleamed under the chandelier lights, tight along the waist and adorned with delicate silver threading that caught the light as she moved. Her hair was coiled into a neat bun, but a few rebellious strands curled along her temples, softening the sharpness of her expression.

She lifted one perfectly arched eyebrow in my direction, a subtle challenge in the curve of her mouth, but I didn’t even notice. My attention was otherwise occupied as Zorathys slid a slender glass of pink wine into my hand.

I blinked at him, raising the glass just slightly, and inhaled. The aroma was intoxicating—light, floral, and just acidic enough to tease the senses. I brought it to my lips and took a tentative sip.

Perfect.

Sweet and sour in perfect harmony. My lips curved into a slow smile as I took another, longer sip, letting the wine roll across my tongue. A little more, just because it could, and the warm notes of berries and subtle spice filled me with quiet delight.

The shadows took the glass from me, and still smiling, I turned back to Seraphielle. "You may rise," I said, voice calm, casual, and entirely unconcerned with the potential chaos her bow might have caused.

She straightened, the fabric of her gown stretching just enough to emphasize the sweep of her hips. She gave me a daring wink—subtle, teasing, and utterly unabashed—but I merely nodded in acknowledgment, focused on the next detail: the male demon standing rigidly beside her.

He was tall, striking, and clearly cut from the same cloth as Seraphielle—dangerously good-looking in a way that made one wonder if their blood had been specially refined for aesthetic purposes. His eyes mirrored the same glint Seraphielle carried—the sharp, gleaming, mischievous look of a demon who knew exactly how he affected others and reveled in it. His skin was a deep, polished mahogany, smooth and almost reflective under the chandeliers, and the muscles of his arms and chest hinted at strength without shouting it. He wore a tailored coat of dark plum with silver embroidery along the cuffs, and beneath it, a crisp black vest clung to his torso in a display of controlled elegance.

He didn’t attempt subtlety as he studied me. His gaze was unabashed, lingering just long enough to make the air between us feel charged. Then, without warning, he licked his lips. A single, deliberate motion that made no attempt at discretion.

I raised an eyebrow but kept my composure.

Seraphielle caught my eye again, lips twitching with suppressed amusement, before she finally introduced the man properly. "This is my husband, Guilidern," she said smoothly, voice silky but edged with authority.

I inclined my head. "It’s... nice to meet you," I said, deliberately polite.

He inclined his head in return, though his gaze never left mine.

Zorathys, as usual, seemed completely unbothered. He lifted his glass lazily, took a small sip, and didn’t even glance at the display of flirtatious tension unfolding before him. I caught his ruby gaze once, fleetingly, and the corner of his mouth tugged upward in the faintest smirk.

Before I could dwell on the exchange, a new voice cut sharply through the air, rich and mocking.

"Well, well... Seraphielle. Are you trying to seduce the queen since that is the only thing you are good at?"

I turned, eyebrow raised, to find Aurelixa striding in with her usual calm, lethal precision. She moved with the effortless grace of a predator, heels clicking in perfect rhythm on the polished obsidian floor. Beside her walked a male fox demon, tall and striking, his presence dark and commanding. His skin was the deep, warm hue of chocolate, polished and flawless. Each of his fox ears was pierced, long beads dangling elegantly from the cartilage and swaying with his every movement. His eyes were an arresting mix of black and white, patterned in a way that made them seem both intense and unreadable, dangerous yet mesmerizing.

His tails—seven in total—swung behind him like dark banners, black as midnight, their fur glossy and perfectly groomed.

Aurelixa herself was a study in control and poise. Her white nine-tailed elegance from previous encounters had been reduced here to a purposeful, smooth stride, but her presence still drew every eye in the room. She matched her male companion perfectly, two predators moving as one.

They reached us, and both bowed with precision, their movements sharp and deliberate. Aurelixa’s gaze flicked toward me, calm but assessing, her red-tipped tails fanning softly behind her.

"Your majesties," they said.

"Rise," I told them.

Aurelixa obeyed, then introduced the man beside her. "This is my husband, Xaleron."

I inclined my head to him, offering the same polite acknowledgment I had given Seraphielle’s husband. "It’s nice to meet you," I said.

Seraphielle scoffed at that. "My lady, no need to lie and acknowledge the fox demons; there is nothing nice about them."

Aurelixa gave Seraphielle a look of disgust. "Is that what you think? But then again, for someone who thinks everything nice has to do with sex, I’m not surprised that you think that way."

"Says the demon who has various male attendants," Seraphielle said to Aurelixa.

"And they are only attendants. At least I don’t sleep with them like you do with your workers," Aurelixa muttered.

"Oh?" Seraphielle said as she approached Aurelixa. "But I do remember that issue that happened over eight hundred years ago, where you were caught with one of your workers."

"And I remember the incident that happened around that year too, where you were caught with not just one but several of your workers," Aurelixa said to Seraphielle.

I just watched them go at each other as I ate my pastries. Even Zorathys found this mildly amusing. I was seeing the rivalry between the fox demons and the succubi and incubi demons in real life... but it didn’t last long because their husbands intervened.
