Chapter 70: Shadows and Serpents

The moon hung high over the capital of the demon realm, its silver light slanting over the black stone spires of the castle. The night was alive with quiet motion, the occasional flutter of wings or distant hoot of a bird breaking the otherwise still air. In the streets below, shadows moved like sentient things, but none of it concerned the people in the castle.

High above the city, in another building that could also pass for a castle but not as beautiful as the demon King’s residence, a figure adjusted her gown with meticulous care, checking each pearl in her hair, the faint glimmer of enchanted jewels threading through her braids. Seraphielle’s reflection in the silver-framed mirror caught her attention. She leaned slightly closer, brushing her fingers over the soft velvet of her gown, and allowed herself a slow, appreciative smile.

The dress she had chosen was daring, sensual, and perfectly suited for the kind of attention she intended to command. The fabric shimmered like liquid amethyst, flowing over her curves with a delicate softness. The bodice clung to her chest, structured just enough to highlight her form while leaving the sides open to the daring cut of sheer panels that revealed glimpses of skin in the most tantalizing way. The neckline dipped low, accentuating the slope of her shoulders and the curve of her collarbones, while the back of the gown dipped in a gentle V, tracing the small of her back and leaving her wings free to move gracefully.

Pearl-studded embroidery ran along the edges, catching the faintest light and giving the illusion of stars scattered across her body. The skirt flowed loosely from her hips, long enough to skim the tops of her thighs and drape like water with every step, yet cut to allow movement. A huge slit on the right side revealed just enough of her leg to make her steps look like a predatory dance. Every inch of the gown whispered of power, seduction, and confidence.

The butler had lingered silently while she adjusted her hair, then cleared his throat with an approving nod. "My lady, you are... quite breathtaking tonight."

Seraphielle turned toward him with a sly, confident smile, tilting her head just so. "I should hope so. After all, tonight is... very important."

He bowed slightly, mumbling a polite, "Yes, my lady."

Satisfied with her appearance, Seraphielle swept past him, the gown’s hem brushing the floor softly, and exited her home. She stepped into the night air and rose effortlessly, her wings unfolding behind her. The shadows were her allies, and she melted into them immediately, becoming a ghost gliding above the rooftops. The streets of the capital slipped beneath her like a silent river of darkness, and she allowed herself the brief satisfaction of thinking how lucky she was: the night already deep, the castle mostly dark save for a few wards and magical lights, and the King himself a shadow demon whose domain at night was dim and silent.

Flying closer to the castle, she spotted it—an open window glowing with the soft, warm light of candles and faintly reflected magic. It was the queen’s chambers, she realized. Seraphielle’s pulse quickened slightly, excitement and anticipation coiling inside her. Tonight was not only about the party but about her chance to see the queen up close. To study her. Perhaps even...seduce her.

She hovered for a moment, wings folding around her like a cloak of smoke, and observed. The queen slept peacefully on the bed. Around her were the remnants of her snacks: tiny tarts, candied spheres, and biscuit delicacies scattered haphazardly across the low table and the carpet.

Seraphielle sighed softly. "Late, as usual," she muttered to herself, adjusting her hair so that the pearls glittered faintly in the dim light.

With the elegance of a predator, she glided to the window, letting herself through the opening with the grace of one born to the shadows. Her feet barely touched the floor as she landed. The air inside the room smelled faintly of sugar and lavender, warm and inviting, but the faint hum of magical wards made her cautious. She moved lightly, stepping between the trays and the bed, careful not to disturb the slumbering queen.

Then she noticed something else.

A slight movement at the far corner of the room—a figure small, pale, and impossibly agile. Seraphielle’s eyes narrowed. The child—yes, a child was perched on the floor, his hair was a deep blue.

His white gown trailed lightly behind him, and his pale skin almost glowed in the candlelight. He moved with an uncanny fluidity, dancing lightly across the floor as if performing some silent ritual, picking up snacks and tasting them delicately, his movements precise yet playful.

Seraphielle paused, assessing him. The child seemed around the age of her daughter, perhaps five or six by human standards, though there was something unnatural about him. His blue eyes, bright and alert, flicked upward to meet hers as if he sensed her intrusion.

The moment their gazes met, the child stiffened, his body tense. His eyes narrowed into thin, serpent-like slits. The air in the room seemed to change as he lifted his small frame, and in a heartbeat, the child transformed.

Scales shimmered where pale skin had been, stretching and coiling, expanding with a grace that was both terrifying and beautiful. In an instant, he became a massive serpent, blue-black and glinting under the dim light, every movement fluid and deliberate. His form wrapped protectively around the queen, coiling her bed with an elegance that radiated authority.

A hiss erupted from him, sharp and commanding, directed at Seraphielle. It carried not only the sound of a warning but the weight of instinctual power. The room seemed to shrink around them, the shadows deepening as the serpent’s body blocked any approach, his glowing, forked tongue flicking outward to taste the air and warn intruders.

Seraphielle’s breath caught in her throat, but she recovered quickly. She had not expected this level of guardianship.

Meanwhile, Elyn stirred. Her eyelids fluttered open slowly, the remnants of sleep lingering. At first, she blinked against the light, confused. But then her gaze fell upon the serpentine figure coiling protectively around her bed.

The color struck her first: deep blue, almost black, but glinting faintly in the candlelight. She followed the coils with her eyes, tracing the enormous body until it led to the head—forked tongue flicking with precision, eyes slitted and glowing faintly.

Elyn decided at that point that her eyes were playing a trick on her and decided to go back to sleep.
