Chapter 68: Wet Surprises and Heartbeats

Elyn’s POV

"Oops?" I asked him as I turned my head slowly. "That’s the only thing you can say?"

He winced. "I’m really sorry. I didn’t... I may have forgotten that you would get wet if you just opened the door like that."

"And you didn’t think to warn me?" I asked him.

"I forgot."

"And that suddenly makes it better. It makes it so good that you forgot because, let me guess, your brain is too lazy to remember something as basic as ’Hey, Elyn, do not open the door just like that, if not you’ll be drenched with water from who knows where?’"

"It’s water from the..."

"I don’t care where the water is from, and get down from the air or whatever it is you are lying on," I told him.

He nodded immediately and went down. His wings disappeared and his body pillow was back on the bed.

"You know what, let me just make you dry. I can do that. I’m really sorry this happened. I should have..."

"If you can make me dry again, then just do it and stop explaining."

He nodded and then snapped his fingers, and all of a sudden I was not wet... rather, I wasn’t drenched in water again.

"Call your door," I told him.

"Firefly..." He gave me a look. "Sorry, Elyn, if you open the door again, then you’ll get wet," he told me.

"So what is it I’m supposed to do then?"

"I’ll take us back to the castle," he told me. "But before I do so... are you mad at me?" he asked softly.

Damn this demon and how beautiful his voice sounds, and how soft it even sounds right now, that it sounds like he cares if I’m mad at him or not. Damn him.

"I don’t want to answer you," I told him with a huff.

"Then I’m not going to let you leave," he replied to me.

I stared at him with a raised eyebrow. "You really think that threatening not to let me leave is going to do anything? Your door is scared of me; I just need to snap my fingers and it will appear," I told him.

He nodded. "That’s true, but the thing is, if you step through the door, you’d be in a sea—one that’s filled with various creatures that I know you have never seen. Creatures that would take any opportunity to eat you, so, um... yeah, it’s going to do something."

I gave him a look. "I’m thinking that maybe I’ll prefer the sea right now to your company."

"That just tells me you are mad at me. I’m really sorry, I forgot about the water splash, and that’s not because I’m tired or lazy—or maybe it is because I just wanted to go back to sleep," he told me.

I paused and observed him. He looked guilty, and those vibrant eyes were filled with regret. And with how he looked right now—like he had no idea how he forgot and that he was really regretting it—I couldn’t be mad at him.

I released a sigh. "I’m not mad... at least not anymore. I was just mad that my hair and my clothes were all wet, and it wasn’t like I was planning on going for a swim, so..." I said with a shrug.

"That’s honest," he said to me.

"I was being honest, so of course it was honest," I told him.

His lips twitched at that, and then suddenly the door appeared behind me.

I gave Zorathys a look. "Can I walk out the door now?"

He gave me a nod.

"There will be no water splashing on me or animals trying to eat me, right?" I asked him.

His lips twitched again, and a playful smirk played on his mouth.

And this just took me back to when I first met Zorathys, back at Aelthryn when we talked about all the attendees of the party, where they were dressed ridiculously.

It was like he had turned on his charming self, and I know I’ve been saying this a lot, but this demon was fucking handsome, and seeing that smirk there was playing with my brain and my heart, which had now increased its beating.

Someone tell my heart to calm down. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a handsome man... oh, who was I kidding? This was the first time I was seeing a man as handsome as Zorathys.

And maybe I was behaving this way because everything about his look was more my type. Naviel was pretty, Ignivar was handsome too, but their beauty didn’t hold a candle to Zorathys.

I cleared my throat and gave him a small wave, then opened the door. Immediately, I jumped out of the way just in case Zorathys was playing a trick on me.

A warm chuckle sounded from behind me.

"I told you that you could walk out and you’d be safe," he told me.

"Yeah," I said as I swallowed nervously. "Well... one can never be too sure, especially when it comes to you," I told him.

Immediately after I said those words, I walked out the door. This time, the door lingered a bit, and it wasn’t until I had made my way into my room that it disappeared.

I had gone into Zorathys’ room for something else—to inform him about the ball and how I could be introduced to the nobles—and then I had been drenched with water after that, making me pissed. But now, leaving his room, I wasn’t pissed at all.

Instead, I was feeling kind of fuzzy. If I could feel this way just from a conversation as simple as that, then I was a goner when he actually started pulling out all the stops. I needed to get my act together.

My plan wasn’t to fall for the lazy demon king who annoyed me but still had what I suspected was a soft side. No... what the hell? I can’t even remember what my plan was again.

I groaned. "Zorathys and his fucking handsome self!"
