Chapter 144 - 143: Zhao Wendong’s Henchmen
Zhao Wenjun looked up, a flicker of doubt in his eyes. The others exchanged glances, wondering why the eagle looked so familiar.
"Is that Brother San’s Big Eagle?"
Er Gouzi asked, a little unsure. Zhao Wenjun shook his head.
"I don’t know. I’m not sure."
Unlike them, Zhao Wenwu jumped to his feet, clapping his hands with glee.
"Haha, it’s Brother San’s! That’s his big bird."
"Brother San is here! These stinking wolves are done for, hahaha."
Zhao Wenwu’s laughter had barely faded when gunshots rang out not far ahead of them.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The bullets flew nonstop. The sheer firepower made it sound like a whole platoon had arrived.
AWOOOO! The gunshots were mixed with the piercing howls and miserable yelps of wolves. The Wolf Pack surrounding them grew agitated. Some turned and fled, while others charged toward the source of the gunfire.
"Great! It really is Brother San! Let’s attack!"
Zhao Wenjun shouted, and the men excitedly raised their guns. They began to advance toward the sound of the shooting, continuously aiming and firing at the surrounding Wolf Pack. They no longer had to worry about their low rate of fire leaving them vulnerable, as the pack was clearly in disarray from the pincer attack.
The shooter was none other than Zhao Wendong. He had arrived some time ago. Xiaojin had been circling overhead, and Wendong recalled it telling him about dogs fighting wolves. Hearing the howls, he slowly crept over and saw the pack besieging his eldest brother and the others.
And about ten meters behind the Wolf Pack, perched high on a rock, stood a snow-white silver wolf. It was flanked by two of the strongest male wolves. The constant howling came from this White Wolf. ’So, this is the king of the pack?’
An entirely snow-white wolf—that was incredibly rare. And just as Zhao Wendong spotted the White Wolf, it seemed to sense him. It sharply turned its head in his direction and let out a low growl.
[What is watching me?]
Following its low growl, the two bodyguard wolves beside it shot toward Zhao Wendong’s position.
Zhao Wendong read the White Wolf’s thoughts and realized it was very intelligent and alert. In his past life, he had heard of white wolves but had never seen one. He couldn’t tell if this creature was an albino or a snow wolf crossbred from the Maozi side.
Seeing the two strong male wolves lunging at him, Zhao Wendong didn’t hesitate. He shot to his feet and pulled the trigger, and the first wolf fell instantly. The second wolf immediately pounced, trying to attack while he chambered another round. It had no idea the weapon in his hands could fire again with just another pull of the trigger.
Zhao Wendong pulled the trigger so fast, he made the Type 56 semi-automatic rifle fire like a submachine gun. The second pouncing wolf couldn’t react in time and was riddled with bullets in mid-air. It let out a wretched howl and fell to the snow, motionless.
[Another human has appeared.]
[His gun is more powerful. Dangerous. Retreat.]
The White Wolf’s thoughts flashed in rapid succession as it let out a long, drawn-out howl. The moment Zhao Wendong aimed his rifle at it, it leaped off the rock. It glanced back at Zhao Wendong once before disappearing into the forest, vanishing in the blink of an eye. Knowing he couldn’t catch it, Zhao Wendong fired two more shots into the male wolf he had wounded initially, giving it no chance to play dead.
The members of the Wolf Pack that had been charging toward Zhao Wendong just moments before quickly turned and fled at the White Wolf’s command. At that moment, Zhao Wenjun and the others on the other side opened fire in support. The few wolves caught between them were hit from both sides and fell before they could escape.
[Master is here! Get ’em, brothers!]
General’s thought flashed by. The morale of the three dogs soared, and led by General, they fiercely chased after the last wolf in the fleeing pack. Suddenly, with a cry from the sky, Xiaojin descended. Its hook-like talons tore two chunks of flesh from the wolf.
"AWOOOO~"
The wolf was knocked over by Xiaojin’s single strike and let out a piercing, miserable howl. It had just scrambled up to run again when the three dogs—one yellow, two black—arrived. Zhui Feng bit down on the wolf’s leg first. Zhen Shan followed up by clamping his jaws on its neck. General circled around and finally decided to just go for the crotch.
After being tormented by them for a short while, the wolf was soon breathing its last. The three dogs wagged their tails furiously, finally venting the frustration from being cornered by the Wolf Pack earlier.
In the distance, they could still hear the long howls of the White Wolf and the answering calls of the fleeing wolves, as if it were taking a roll call. These wolves advanced and retreated with discipline, their movements swift and decisive, like a well-trained army. They left a deep impression on Zhao Wendong and the others.
"Hahaha, Third Brother! I knew it was you! You’re finally back! This is great!"
Zhao Wenwu ran over excitedly, lifted Zhao Wendong into the air, and spun him around twice. Zhao Wendong, squeezed so tight he couldn’t breathe, helplessly slapped at Zhao Wenwu.
"Holy shit! Second Brother, put me down! You’re gonna suffocate me!"
"Hehe."
Zhao Wenwu put Zhao Wendong down with a silly grin. Zhao Wendong coughed a couple of times and looked at Jin Xiuying, who was walking up behind him.
"Hello, Second Sister-in-law. How come it’s just you two? Where are Eldest Brother and Er Gouzi?"
"Those two are over there guarding the kill. These wolves were drawn here by the prey we shot."
Zhao Wendong was taken aback by this.
"Really? What kind of prey is so popular? I’ll go take a look."
"Whoa! Such a huge red deer! It must weigh at least five hundred jin. No wonder those wolves went to so much trouble."
When he met up with Zhao Wenjun and Er Gouzi, Zhao Wendong immediately spotted the red deer on the ground. Meanwhile, Zhao Wenjun and the others were staring intently at the Type 56 rifle in his hands, practically drooling.
"Dongzi, you’re back! That’s one cool gun. Is that a Type 56 semi-auto?"
"Brother San, you’re awesome! That gun is ferocious!"
"If we had one of these, forget twenty of these damn wolves. Even a hundred of them wouldn’t be enough for us to mow down."
Zhao Wendong shook his head and told them about the White Wolf he had just seen.
"That wolf is smart. Wolves are already good at fighting as a pack, and now they have a Wolf King like that. An ordinary person would have a real hard time against it. If it really had a hundred wolves, it could dominate all the surrounding mountains."
"Pure white? That’s really a rarity. I’ve heard of them before, but I’ve never actually seen one."
Everyone clicked their tongues in amazement. Just then, the three dogs returned, dragging the dead wolf. Upon seeing Zhao Wendong, they immediately rushed over and circled him. Zhao Wendong patted each of them on the head, giving them plenty of encouragement, which made the dogs so happy their tails wagged like propellers.
[Me.]
Xiaojin descended from the sky and landed on Zhao Wendong’s shoulder. Looking into its intelligent eyes, Zhao Wendong smiled and stroked its head. It blinked and turned its head to the side.
"Wow, Brother San, you’ve trained the Big Eagle too? Can I play with it?"
"Yeah. You can pet it gently, it’s fine."
Zhao Wenwu immediately and carefully stroked Xiaojin’s head. He noticed that Xiaojin didn’t flinch but instead turned its head to stare at him motionlessly with its hawklike eyes. A wide, excited grin spread across his face.
"Hehe, Brother San, it likes me! Did you see that?"
"Yeah, I saw. Everyone likes Second Brother."
"Hahaha, Brother San, it’s so good to have you back. It’s so boring when you’re not around."
Zhao Wendong shot a mischievous grin toward Jin Xiuying, who was watching them with a gentle smile.
"Is it boring even when Second Sister-in-law is with you?"
"Who said that? That’s plenty of fun! Let me tell you... Mmph mmph!"
Before he could finish, a blushing Jin Xiuying clapped a hand over his mouth.
"Hahaha!"
Everyone else burst into laughter.
