Chapter 310: The Providence Protects the Blessed
Mrs. Donovan took a sip of water. She realized her youngest daughter was talking about that so-called "original plot" again. Although it was frightening, she also understood it could be changed, and the color finally returned to her face.
Seeing this, Arabella Donovan let out a sigh of relief and turned her gaze back to her third brother.
’In the original plot, my third brother died too early to be framed and arrested. I never thought he’d be making his first trip to the station today because of me.’
The Donovans: "..." ’For heaven’s sake, child, stop thinking! You’re scaring us to death!’
’But don’t worry too much, big brother. Your little sister has already put you on the radar with Mr. Cole and his people. They’ll send someone to protect you and secretly keep an eye on your research progress. I refuse to believe that with government personnel providing real-time protection, that scumbag Julian Spencer will still be able to steal the credit.’
Dennis Donovan nodded in agreement. ’That’s right, that’s right. As long as the kid can produce some real results, forget just putting him on a pedestal—I’d even rewrite the family registry for him... that’s not out of the question!’
He decided he would send half of his own men over later. If anyone dared to have any funny ideas about his grandson, he’d have them beaten up first and ask questions later!
The rest of the Donovans hadn’t expected the situation to escalate so dramatically and subconsciously looked toward Aurora Donovan.
Aurora Donovan’s mouth twitched. Suddenly becoming the center of the family’s attention, he felt a mix of exasperation and genuine emotion at how much his little sister was doing for him.
’According to the original plot’s timeline, my third brother’s research breakthrough should happen within the year, so he must have made some progress by now. Oh, big brother, I’ve already made some big promises for you. You’d better live up to them.’
Instantly crushed by the pressure, Aurora Donovan thought, "..." ’I really have you to thank for this. I’m heading back to work overtime as soon as I get home!’
After considering Arabella’s third brother—who now had the potential to bring great glory to the family—Dennis Donovan’s gaze swept the area, and his sharp eyes landed on a certain someone standing alone not far away.
Remembering that this man seemed to be with Arabella and her brother during the car crash, his eyes narrowed dangerously. He walked up to him and asked in a low voice only the two of them could hear, "When did you meet up with Arabella and the others?"
Caspian Rhodes wasn’t a fool. He saw through the old man’s intentions at a glance and answered truthfully, "Right as Arabella and her brother were leaving the school gate. Before that, though, I saw them from a distance talking to a student with the surname Xiao at the entrance to the research institute."
A student with the surname Xiao... wasn’t that...
Dennis Donovan’s brow furrowed, and his expression grew even more disdainful as he looked at Caspian Rhodes.
’How can this kid’s luck be so good? He’s always on the scene whenever there’s the slightest bit of trouble around Arabella.’
"Come see me in my study when we get back."
Caspian Rhodes paused for a moment before nodding. "Alright. I’ll impose on you later. I just hope you won’t find my presence too disagreeable."
Dennis Donovan snorted. It was impossible not to find him disagreeable, but that wouldn’t stop him from using the young man to gather information.
After giving their statements and getting the full story at the police station, Arabella and the others went home. Someone else would handle the follow-up, so they didn’t need to worry about it.
It wasn’t until she was in the car that Arabella belatedly remembered she had subconsciously screamed for her master to save her when the truck was rushing toward them.
’Could it be? Did Master summon that bolt of lightning?’
The Donovans, who had just settled into the car, immediately sat bolt upright. Their ears perked up, afraid of missing a single detail about Arabella’s master.
Then again, a master who could summon lightning with his bare hands? That was incredible! He really must be a hidden expert!
Meanwhile, back at the Sacred Temple, Rooney was enjoying a leisurely afternoon nap under a large tree, completely unaware that his young disciple had once again boosted his reputation in front of her family.
He was jolted awake by a loud sneeze and saw a message from his rebellious disciple.
SpareTheRod: Masterrrrrrrrr~~~
TranquilMind: ...
TranquilMind: Are you trying to summon a ghost in broad daylight? Need me to perform a "rise from the dead" for you?
SpareTheRod: Master, you’re there! What a miracle! You’re actually not sleeping during the day!
TranquilMind: =·= If I wasn’t here, was it my ghost replying to you just now?
TranquilMind: I *was* sleeping. You woke me up with your incessant nagging. Spit it out, and don’t interrupt your master’s nap.
Arabella Donovan: "..." ’Yep, same old song and dance. That’s my master, all right.’
SpareTheRod: Master, I was in a car accident at noon! A truck thiiiis big almost flattened your favorite little disciple. If we met again, I’m afraid you wouldn’t even recognize me.
TranquilMind: And? The economy down below isn’t doing so great lately. Need your master to burn some more hell money for you? Don’t worry, my dear child. Your master may not have much else, but I’ve got plenty of hell money to go around!
Arabella Donovan: "..." ’Who wants your hell money? I’m alive and well!’
The Donovans: "..." ’Arabella’s master... seems a bit... different, huh?’
SpareTheRod: No, seriously. Aren’t you worried about me at all, Master?
TranquilMind: Why would I worry about you? Given your current situation, if you cause trouble for others, they’ll have bad luck. If others cause trouble for you, they’ll *still* have bad luck. Either way, the unlucky one will never be you, so what’s there for me to worry about?
SpareTheRod: ???
SpareTheRod: Wait, Master, how did you even reach that conclusion? Since when was I so badass?
TranquilMind: [Disdain.jpg] Let me ask you, are you carrying a lot of Merit right now?
SpareTheRod: ...Yes. Does this have something to do with my Merit?
Some time ago, Arabella Donovan had noticed that her Merit had increased quite a bit. At first, she thought it was because she had helped Mr. Lewis’s family and, in the process, dealt with the dangerous element that was Terence Lewis and his family.
But on second thought, that didn’t seem right. Even if she had helped both the Lewis and Mr. York’s families, the amount of Merit she gained seemed far too high.
It wasn’t until she met Ron Cole today that Arabella belatedly realized the Merit she had accumulated might not have come just from Mr. Lewis’s and Mr. York’s families, but also from all the ordinary people who were saved thanks to the effective intervention of Ron Cole and his team.
TranquilMind: [AreYouAnIdiot.jpg] Obviously. You think Merit from The Providence is as common as cabbage, something anyone can get? To put it simply, The Providence protects the fortunate. Having this means you’re on The Providence’s radar. The more Merit you have, the more protection you receive. Anyone who wants to mess with you has to get permission from The Providence itself.
SpareTheRod: So... you weren’t the one who summoned that lightning?
TranquilMind: If I had that kind of power, I’d have ascended to the heavens to hang out with the sun by now. Would I still be here chatting with you?
Arabella Donovan: "..." ’Okay, fine. I really did overestimate you!’
After her silent retort, Arabella seemed to think of something, her eyes gleaming.
SpareTheRod: If I go up against those Children of Providence, who do you think The Providence will help, Master? Me? Or them?
