By the time Atheline and Lilith returned to their quarters, the palace had become considerably quieter. The dinner had ended, and most of the guests had already returned to their assigned rooms. Only the occasional footsteps of an attendant could be heard somewhere beyond their door.

Their little fox followed them inside before immediately making its way toward the bed. Atheline closed the door behind them.

For several seconds, neither he nor Lilith said anything. Then Lilith turned toward him.

"You’ve been quiet since we left the balcony."

Atheline nodded.

"I know."

He walked toward the sitting area and lowered himself onto one of the chairs. Lilith followed, taking the seat opposite him at first. Her fingers brushed the back of his hand as she passed—an absent, habitual touch, the kind that needed no thought between them.

She didn’t rush him.

Atheline leaned back and stared at the ceiling.

"There’s something I didn’t tell Helther."

Lilith’s expression became attentive. She shifted closer without realizing it, her knee resting lightly against his.

"What?"

"When he mentioned the World Tree..." he paused. "I felt something."

Lilith didn’t interrupt. One of her hands drifted to his forearm, thumb tracing a slow, unconscious line along the edge of his sleeve.

"It wasn’t pain exactly." Atheline placed a hand over his chest. "It felt like something inside me was cracking."

Lilith’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Your core?"

"I don’t know." He shook his head. "It was different from the feeling I had when I reached Peak Mystic. It wasn’t like power trying to break through."

"What did it feel like?"

Atheline thought for a moment. His free hand found hers almost of its own accord, fingers loosely interlacing.

"Like something was waking up."

Lilith remained silent, but her thumb continued its quiet stroke against his skin.

"And then it disappeared." He looked toward her. "I don’t know if it’s a warning."

"A foreboding feeling?"

"Maybe." Atheline sighed. "Or maybe I’m just overthinking it."

Lilith moved from her chair and sat beside him on the wider seat. She took his hand properly this time, drawing it into her lap. After a moment she shifted again, guiding him with a soft pressure until he turned and rested his head against her thigh. Her fingers immediately slid into his white hair, combing through the strands in slow, soothing passes.

"After everything we’ve experienced, I don’t think you’re overthinking things."

"That’s not particularly reassuring."

She smiled, her nails lightly scraping his scalp in the way she knew he liked.

"I wasn’t finished."

Atheline looked up at her from her lap.

"You felt something. That doesn’t mean something terrible is about to happen." She gently squeezed the hand still resting in hers. "Your body has undergone several extraordinary changes recently. You awakened powers that had been sealed inside you, reached the peak of the Mystic realm, and gained an entirely new level of elemental control."

She looked into his eyes, still running her fingers through his hair.

"Perhaps your body is reacting to something connected to the World Tree."

"Perhaps."

"But until we have evidence, there is no reason to assume the worst."

Atheline closed his eyes for a moment, leaning more fully into the warmth of her lap. Her hand never stopped its gentle motion.

"You really think it’s nothing?"

"I think it might be something."

He raised an eyebrow without opening his eyes.

"That’s not exactly what I expected."

Lilith smiled, the corner of her mouth curving as her fingers threaded deeper into his hair.

"I’m not going to tell you that your instincts are wrong." She leaned closer, her free hand resting lightly on his chest. "But I also won’t let you frighten yourself over something we don’t understand."

Atheline laughed softly, the sound vibrating against her thigh.

"Fair."

"Besides..." Lilith’s expression became playful. Her fingertips traced the edge of his ear before returning to his hair. "You promised me tonight was supposed to be peaceful."

"Did I?"

"No." She continued the slow strokes through his white strands. "But I’m deciding that it is."

Atheline opened his eyes and watched her from where he lay, the weight of his head still comfortably settled in her lap.

She shifted slightly a few moments later, prompting him gently to sit up. Atheline groaned but obeyed.

She stood, almost excitedly looking down at him.

"Come on."

He closed his eyes and sighed heavily.

"Where are we going?"

"Outside."

"Now?"

"Yes."

"We just returned."

"And?"

"We’re guests."

"Exactly."

She held out her hand.

"Come."

Atheline stared at her hand for a moment before smiling.

He took it.

"Fine."

They left their quarters again.

Rather than returning to the main palace, they followed a quieter path leading away from the central buildings. The Dragonic Palace had been built among the mountains, but there were several natural areas surrounding it.

One of them was a lake. It rested between two rocky slopes, its surface almost perfectly still beneath the moonlight. Small glowing plants grew around its edges, their soft light reflecting across the water.

Atheline stopped when he saw it.

"This is nice."

Lilith smiled.

"I knew you’d like it."

They walked closer to the water. There were no guards nearby, attendants, or representatives. For once, they were completely alone.

Atheline removed his shoes and sat near the edge of the lake. Lilith looked at him.

"What are you doing?"

"Relaxing."

"You’re going to get your clothes dirty."

"I’ll survive."

She shook her head, but instead of sitting she suddenly dipped her bare foot into the shallows and flicked a small arc of water at him. The cold spray caught him across the chest.

Atheline blinked, then slowly rose to his feet.

"That was a mistake."

Lilith’s golden eyes lit with mischief. "Was it?"

She turned and ran.

He chased her along the moonlit shore, white hair streaming behind him, bare feet finding easy purchase on the cool stone and soft grass. Lilith was quick, darting between the glowing plants, laughing as she twisted out of reach every time his fingers nearly closed around her wrist.

Once she spun and splashed him again; he retaliated by catching her around the waist and lifting her clear off the ground for half a second before she wriggled free, still laughing.

They circled the near side of the lake like that; chasing, dodging, occasionally catching one another only long enough to spin or tug before breaking apart again.

Atheline’s earlier quietness had completely vanished. Lilith’s playful shriek when he nearly tackled her into the shallows echoed across the water and made the glowing plants sway.

Eventually he caught her properly, arms locking around her from behind as they both stumbled to a breathless halt near the water’s edge. She leaned back against his chest, still smiling, chest rising and falling.

"Truce?" he asked against her hair.

"For now."

They stayed like that a moment longer, catching their breath, then he released her. Both of them were slightly damp, a few strands of black hair stuck to Lilith’s cheek, Atheline’s tunic dotted with lake water. He sat again near the edge, this time without getting a complaint about the dirt. Lilith dropped down beside him, shoulder brushing his.

For a while they simply watched the water. The reflection of the moon shifted whenever a small breeze passed over the lake.

Atheline eventually leaned backward and rested his hands behind his head.

"This is better than the meeting."

Lilith laughed.

"The meeting hasn’t even started."

"I know."

"Then how can you say that?"

"Because I already know meetings aren’t usually enjoyable."

She smiled, still a little flushed from the chase.

"Fair enough."
