Chapter 403:Just the begging.
Another image appeared this time, it was her kingdom burning.
’You’re afraid of losing everything you’ve built.’
Another followed; her throne empty.
’You’re afraid of becoming powerless.’
The next image was Lilith herself standing alone in an endless black world.
’And most of all, you’re afraid that without your power, you are nothing.’
Something inside Lilith snapped. She finally felt anger. She grabbed the false Lilith by the throat. The woman looked surprised.
Lilith couldn’t breathe, speak or even use Aether but she could still fight. She drove her forehead into the woman’s face.
The false Lilith recoiled from hit but lilith struck again without caring. The hands holding her weakened. She twisted violently and tore herself free, then she swam.
She didn’t know where she was going buy simply moved. Her lungs felt as though they were being ripped apart and her body demanded air, but Lilith kept swimming. The false Lilith appeared beside her.
’Where are you going?’
Lilith ignored her.
’There is no surface.’
She kept swimming.
’No exit.’
Her arms became heavier.
’No light.’
Her legs weakened.
’No one is coming to save you.’
Lilith stopped after that. The false Lilith smiled.
’Finally.’
She turned toward her. For several seconds, they stared at one another, then Lilith closed her eyes. She stopped swimming, stopped struggling, and stopped searching for the surface.
The false Lilith’s expression changed.
’What are you doing?’
Lilith allowed herself to sink.
’Have you given up?’
No.
She had simply stopped fighting the darkness. Her body sank deeper and the pressure increased. Her lungs burned but beneath the pain, Lilith searched for the sensation she had felt earlier.
The law.
Darkness and water surrounded her. There was no light, direction or certainty. And suddenly Lilith understood her mistake.
She had still been treating darkness as an environment: something outside herself, something she needed to conquer, something she needed to command. But a law wasn’t a spell, it wasn’t an element waiting to be manipulated.
It was a truth.
Lilith opened her eyes. The false Lilith watched her.
’What are you doing?’
She smiled. The woman frowned.
’Why are you smiling?’
Lilith finally answered with her mind.
’Because you were right.’
The false Lilith froze.
’About what?’
’I was arrogant.’ Lilith continued sinking. ’I thought darkness belonged to me because shadows obeyed me. I thought controlling shadows meant I understood their origin.’
The false Lilith’s eyes narrowed.
’And now?’
’Now I understand that darkness doesn’t belong to anyone.’
Something shifted. The water stopped feeling cold as she continued.
’Light can enter darkness. Fire can illuminate it. Lightning can tear through it. But when those things disappear, darkness remains.’
The false Lilith stared at her. She raised one hand but there was still no Aether, yet the water around her trembled.
’Darkness isn’t destruction. It isn’t evil. It isn’t fear. Those are meanings people give it because they’re frightened of what they cannot see.’
The false Lilith slowly backed away.
’Stop.’
Lilith smiled.
’Why?’
’You haven’t finished the trial.’
’I know.’
The darkness surrounding them deepened. Lilith’s hair floated around her. Her lungs still burned and her body was still drowning, but the fear was disappearing.
’Darkness is concealment.’
The water darkened.
’It is silence.’
All sound disappeared.
’It is absence.’
The false Lilith’s body began fading.
’It is depth.’
The endless ocean stretched beneath them.
’It is the unknown.’
Lilith looked downward.
For the first time, she wasn’t afraid of what might exist below, then she understood the final piece.
’And darkness doesn’t need light to define it.’
The false Lilith’s eyes widened. Lilith looked directly at her.
’Shadows do.’
Silence filled the waters.
’Darkness doesn’t.’
Something broke.
The entire ocean stopped and every drop of water became motionless. Lilith remained suspended within it.
Then the false Lilith proudly smiled.
"You finally understand."
Lilith heard her voice clearly. Her lungs were still filled with water, yet she could hear.
"Understand what?"
The other Lilith approached.
"Why this trial took your shadows."
Lilith stared at her.
"Because I relied on them."
"More than that." The woman touched Lilith’s chest. "Because shadows were preventing you from seeing darkness."
A pulse moved through Lilith.
"The stronger you became, the more convinced you were that your path was already correct. You improved your techniques. Increased your Aether. Strengthened your core. Refined your shadows."
She smiled.
"But you never changed your understanding."
Lilith looked around.
"And now?"
"Now you have touched the Law of Darkness."
Lilith shook her head.
"Not touched."
The other woman’s smile widened.
"No."
Lilith raised her hand and the darkness moved with Aether, spell or shadow. Darkness itself responded.
Lilith’s eyes widened slightly.
She could feel it, everything: the endless water, the empty space, the absence of light, and the distance between herself and the false Lilith.
She didn’t need eyes or her senses. The darkness itself told her where everything was. Her awareness expanded for more than a thousand meters. The entire black ocean became visible without becoming illuminated.
Lilith slowly smiled.
"I understand it."
The false Lilith nodded.
"Then prove it."
The ocean moved but Lilith barely had time to react. The water crushed inward, pressure striking her from every direction.
Her body folded and pain exploded through her bones. It was clear the trial wasn’t over.
Lilith’s eyes widened.
The false Lilith disappeared and the ocean became violent currents tore through the darkness, throwing her sideways. She slammed into something unseen.
Pain exploded through her shoulder, but before she could process it another current dragged her downward. Lilith tried to stabilize herself.
The darkness responded but it was not enough. She was smashed into the floor and the stone cracked beneath her.
Lilith coughed water while her body screamed from all the abuse. A voice echoed through the ocean.
"Understanding a law is meaningless if your will cannot bear its weight."
Lilith forced herself upward. The pressure doubled; she dropped back to one knee.
"Darkness is endless."
The pressure increased.
"Can your will be endless?"
Lilith’s teeth clenched. She flew backward as another force struck her.
"Darkness consumes everything eventually."
She hit the ground.
"Can you endure being consumed?"
She pushed herself up, her arms trembling. The pressure increased again. Her bones creaked and she fell to both knees.
She could fully feel the darkness now and that made it worse. The vastness of it nearly crushed her mind. It wasn’t merely this ocean.
She suddenly felt darkness everywhere; beneath mountains, inside caves, between stars, and even behind closed eyes. Within every shadow, an incomprehensible concept stretched beyond her mind.
Lilith screamed.
She grabbed her head. Everything was just too much. The Law of Darkness poured into her understanding faster than she could contain it. Her consciousness began fracturing.
Memories scattered and names disappeared. For one terrifying moment, she forgot where she was. Then...
Atheline.
She remembered him first, then her kingdom, her people, her family, and herself.
Her eyes snapped open.
"No." The darkness pressed against her. "You wished to comprehend me."
Lilith slowly stood. Blood ran from her nose.
"Then surrender yourself."
Lilith laughed, it was strained, almost breathless.
"No."
The pressure became overwhelming. Her knees nearly buckled.
"You cannot possess darkness."
"I know."
"Then surrender."
"No."
"Why?"
Lilith raised her head.
"Because understanding you doesn’t mean losing myself to you."
Silence answered her. She straightened.
"You are darkness."
She took one step and the ocean trembled.
"You existed before me."
Another step.
"You will exist after me."
Another.
"I don’t own you."
The pressure weakened.
"But neither do you own me."
Everything stopped. Lilith raised her hand.
"Darkness is not my servant."
The black ocean rose behind her.
"And I am not darkness’s servant."
The water separated. And an enormous path opened through the ocean. Lilith stood at its center. Her dark hair fell around her shoulders as the water withdrew.
She breathed.
Air entered her lungs and the pain vanished. Her Aether returned, then her shadows but they felt different. They were small, not weaker, but incomplete.
Lilith looked at her hand. Barkness gathered around it. The shadow beneath her feet expanded instinctively, but behind it existed something far greater. Something she could finally perceive.
Lilith closed her fist.
The entire ocean disappeared. She stood once again inside the ancient ruin. The woman who looked exactly like her stood several meters away. They stared at each other, then the woman smiled.
"You conquered the trial."
Lilith breathed slowly.
"I nearly drowned."
"You did drown."
Lilith frowned. The woman laughed.
"Several times."
"That isn’t funny."
"I thought it was."
Lilith stared at her.
"Who are you?"
The woman began fading.
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"Then perhaps you’ll discover the answer someday."
Lilith stepped forward.
"Wait."
The woman continued disappearing.
"You have what you came for."
Lilith felt the darkness surrounding her. Not as an element or merely as Aether but as a law.
She understood it.
The Law of Darkness.
Not every secret darkness could ever contain, but the fundamental law itself had taken root within her. Her path had changed.
The woman smiled one final time.
"Your shadows were only the beginning, Lilith."
Then she vanished. Lilith stood alone and then looked down at her hand. A small sphere of darkness appeared above her palm. There was no shadow cast it or nearby light to defined it.
It simply existed.
Lilith watched it silently, then she smiled. For the first time in her life, she wasn’t manipulating a shadow. She was holding darkness itself.
And the trial was over.
