Chapter 128 - 97: Astonishing Meat-to-Feed Ratio (Part 2)
「July 13th.」
Before he knew it, the cicadas outside were buzzing more frantically, as if celebrating the arrival of summer.
The lychees on both sides of the road had reddened, while the longans were still a bit unripe. Under the scorching sun, many farmers were busy in the orchards with their families.
When passing Salt Town Village, a local had just given Jiang Miao a few bags of Guiwei lychees. He casually peeled one and popped the crystal-clear pulp into his mouth.
He wasn’t in the lab at the moment, but at the feed mill.
Inside the feed mill, the newly renovated floors, walls, and steel-frame workshops, along with the refurbished equipment, made the entire facility look brand new.
A large sign, installed just a few days ago, was currently covered with a red cloth, waiting to be unveiled.
However, besides him, a few other guests would be attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the start of production.
Among those present, besides Jiang Miao, were General Manager Jiang Haibo, feed mill manager Fang Yi, and the head of the Environmental Protection Office, Lu Mingyuan.
Fang Yi, from North Sea in Guangxi Province, was forty-one years old. With a round face and big eyes, he looked younger than his age. He had previously worked as a manager for a small feed mill in Goose City before Jiang Haibo poached him to manage this one.
Lu Mingyuan from the Environmental Protection Office was here today simply to explain the environmental engineering details to Jiang Miao later, as he was the one who had led the team handling the feed mill’s environmental planning.
After everyone had a few lychees, Fang Yi faced the scorching sun at the ribbon-cutting site and suggested, "Boss, why don’t we head into the factory and take a look first?"
Jiang Miao glanced at his watch and agreed. "Lead the way."
The entire factory was divided into six areas: the office building, the loading and unloading yard, the raw material storage warehouse, the finished product storage warehouse, the raw material primary processing workshop, and the finished feed production workshop.
The spot where they had been standing was the loading and unloading yard. Skipping the feed mill’s office building, they arrived at the raw material storage warehouse, which was right next to the yard.
"Boss, this is the fresh fish receiving room, designed according to your specifications. Behind it are the flash-freezing room, the cold storage warehouse, and the conventional raw material storage warehouse."
Jiang Miao glanced at the cold storage warehouse. "How many tons of frozen fish can this warehouse store?"
Fang Yi quickly replied, "It can store about 12,000 tons of frozen fish. Besides the racks and reserved passageways, there’s a total of 28,000 cubic meters of storage space, split into two warehouses. Both are equipped with backup diesel generators."
After observing for a moment, Jiang Miao pointed out several potential issues, such as the insulation layers in parts of the cold storage warehouse not being properly sealed.
Hearing this, Fang Yi broke out in a cold sweat and quickly promised to make corrections as soon as possible.
In truth, having only worked at Hailufeng Company for a little over two months, Fang Yi didn’t understand Jiang Miao’s work style, nor was he aware of the reverence everyone in the company, from top to bottom, held for him.
The purchasing department, for example, felt like they were treading on thin ice.
This was because Jiang Miao knew more about the products they purchased than the manufacturers themselves. He simply couldn’t be fooled. After being criticized several times, the purchasing department no longer dared to pull any tricks, terrified the boss would conduct a surprise inspection and they’d have to pack their bags and leave.
And today was the first time Fang Yi had met a boss who was a true expert on everything, leaving him instantly intimidated.
After they finished inspecting the cold storage area, they moved on.
Next door was the storage area for raw feed grains, which could hold 50,000 to 70,000 tons of corn, soybean meal, and the like.
The same situation played out again.
The cold sweat on Fang Yi’s forehead was now pouring down like rain as he hastily jotted down the issues and repeated his promise to arrange for corrections as soon as possible.
Next up was the high-value specialty raw material warehouse. This area mainly stored items like nutrients, minerals, and chemicals, and could hold about 8,000 tons of various raw materials.
Fang Yi quickly began his introduction. "We’ve sorted these raw materials by category. Based on their properties, we’ve prepared specialized storage rooms and cabinets for them."
"Things are mostly fine here, but..."
’What, again?’ Fang Yi cried out in his mind. ’Seriously?’
"But your warehouse management system needs to keep up. In particular, the shelf lives of these raw materials vary. You need to plan your purchasing volumes reasonably to avoid both waste and supply shortages."
Fang Yi nodded. "You’re right, Boss. We’ll definitely implement proper warehouse management procedures."
Next, the group arrived at the primary processing workshop.
A large array of production equipment was on display here.
Wearing a hard hat, Fang Yi pointed to the heap of machinery and said, "Boss, this is the factory’s production equipment. We’ve adopted the wet pressing method, which allows us to produce high-quality fish meal and crude fish oil."
Jiang Miao was actually quite knowledgeable about the various processing methods for fish meal.
Fish meal production processes are generally divided into six main categories: direct drying, dry pressing, wet pressing, centrifugation, extraction, and hydrolysis.
Wet pressing is the main process used by most major manufacturers today. The advantage of this method is that it yields relatively high-quality fish meal and crude fish oil at a moderate production cost.
However, Jiang Miao didn’t press for every last detail.
If he wanted to understand the detailed process, he could just look it up on a relevant website. Having Fang Yi explain it all here would take the better part of a day.
He asked a more important question: "Old Fang, during the trial runs these past few days, what’s the meal yield and oil yield for the Egyptian Catfish?"
