Chapter 178 - 113: Treacherous and Unpredictable
After all, the Du Family was just a family whose power was rooted in academia. And within his generation, he had climbed the highest in the country’s academic circles.
Of course, one of his former seniors was even more accomplished than him. The problem was, given the current situation, this senior wouldn’t lift a finger to help. After all, the allegations against Du Bolun had been substantiated; there was no question of him being framed.
If his senior chose to help him now, he would just be bringing trouble upon himself.
Any smart person wouldn’t stick their neck out for Du Bolun at a time like this. Staying silent was the wisest course of action.
Besides, they were merely colleagues from his university days, not actual brothers. Even a blood brother wouldn’t casually step in at a time like this.
The faces of the father and son, Du Bolun and Du Jinxuan, were ashen as they were led away together under the moonlight.
Clearly, Jiang Miao had prepared more than enough evidence this time. He wasn’t going to give the father and son any chance to argue or talk their way out of it.
Song Lei, who was still at the university, was naturally keeping a close eye on the situation from the shadows.
With Du Bolun and his son taken in for "a cup of tea," Vice Principal He didn’t stay idle. He quickly summoned the five students still on campus, including Song Lei, to the dean’s office.
Song Lei, who already harbored a grudge, was naturally very cooperative. He told them everything, holding back only two details: the mysterious email he had received, and the fact that he’d secretly had his brother sell dirt on Du Bolun.
The other PhD students, who also had no love for Du Bolun and his son, came forward one by one. They revealed which papers they had ghostwritten or conducted the research for, and described how Du Bolun had coerced them.
Unable to withstand the pressure, Lu Lan even dropped the bombshell that Du Bolun had gotten her pregnant and that she had secretly returned home last year to have an abortion.
As the students’ revelations poured out, the sheer volume of information—several times more than what had been exposed online—made Vice Principal He and the others gasp. They knew with absolute certainty that there was no coming back from this for Du Bolun and his son.
"Vice Principal He, this file is very useful," said a middle-aged man whose eyes crinkled when he smiled, holding a document provided by one of the students.
"Oh? What’s it about?"
"It’s about Du Bolun’s wife, Tang Ke. According to the student’s statement, Du Bolun once sent him to a company Tang Ke opened, ’New Era Information Consulting Services,’ for some ’special training.’ The student said the training seemed strange, so he faked an illness to get out of it."
Vice Principal He understood instantly. "Are you saying... Tang Ke might be working for foreign interests?"
"Yes."
"You all continue. I’m going to make a call right away."
In truth, Jiang Miao had known about this for a long time. However, he was also well aware that this kind of intelligence wasn’t something a student could easily obtain, which is why he hadn’t included it in the initial email to Song Lei.
After all, with this kind of thing, once you start digging, you’re bound to uncover more dirt.
Just as he’d expected, once the students saw that Du Bolun was going down, and with "Huang Hanwen" having been the first to turn on him, they felt there was no reason to hide anything for him anymore. They dumped out everything they knew all at once.
Tonight was destined to be a sleepless night.
Meanwhile, in Shanghai, Du Bolun’s father, who had been enjoying his retirement, was anxiously making calls from the living room of his villa.
"Hello, Wu Xin! It’s your old teacher..."
"Oh? Professor, is that you? Why are you still up so late? I’m in the middle of something with a few colleagues and can’t get away at the moment. I’ll call you back in a few days to apologize properly."
The person on the other end didn’t even give Du Yongfeng a chance to speak, cutting him off preemptively before hanging up.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...
Listening to the dial tone, Du Yongfeng’s face turned a shade of livid purple. "Hmph... Good, good, just wonderful," he wheezed. "What a fine student I taught. So ungrateful!"
His daughter-in-law, Tang Ke, standing beside him, was also frantic. "Dad! You have to think of something! Jinxuan is your eldest grandson!"
"What’s the rush?" Du Yongfeng tried another number, but this person was even more direct—they simply didn’t pick up.
He made one call after another, but none of his former students were willing to help. They either refused outright or simply ignored his calls.
Du Yongfeng was so enraged his chest heaved. He quickly placed a few nitroglycerin tablets under his tongue to ease the chest pain, but he failed to realize that his pacemaker had just connected to his phone.
Just then, the villa’s doorbell rang.
The housekeeper hurried to get the door.
A moment later.
A dozen men in black suits streamed in past the panic-stricken housekeeper.
At this sight, Tang Ke’s expression changed. She seemed to recall something, and a cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
Du Yongfeng’s eyes widened. "Gentlemen," he demanded in a low voice, "my son is merely guilty of academic misconduct. Is it necessary to escalate things to this level?"
The middle-aged man in the lead glanced at Du Yongfeng, then turned his gaze to Tang Ke, who was now drenched in sweat. "Ms. Tang Ke, your consulting firm has quite the business scope, doesn’t it? All the way to America. Why don’t you come with us and tell us all about how your company operates?"
"What?" Du Yongfeng froze, then turned a trembling gaze to his daughter-in-law. "Tang Ke, you..."
He had obviously guessed what her company was involved in. The realization sent a jolt of rage through him, so powerful it felt as though a giant hand were squeezing his heart. His lips quickly turned a deathly purple.
Seeing that something was terribly wrong, the middle-aged man yelled, "Get him to a hospital for emergency treatment, now!"
"Dad!" Tang Ke cried out, helpless.
But then, Du Yongfeng seemed to rally for a moment. One side of his body, however, had gone rigid—a clear sign of a stroke.
In the ensuing chaos, Du Yongfeng was rushed to the hospital.
And Tang Ke was taken away for "a cup of tea" as well.
Overnight, the Du Family completely fell apart.
Du Yongfeng had suffered a stroke, leaving one side of his body paralyzed. He was currently in the hospital receiving emergency care, but even if he pulled through, the paralysis would be permanent.
The next day, others connected to the Du Family also received various summonses for questioning. This included Du Yongfeng’s former students, as well as Du Bolun’s students and friends.
Anyone who had ever worked at Tang Ke’s company was taken directly into custody.
Even Lin Shuya was brought in for questioning for over an hour.
Jiang Miao, the mastermind behind it all, accompanied Shuya.
On the way back, Shuya was still in shock. "I can’t believe Tang Ke was actually involved in something like that," she said. "She even wanted to arrange an internship for me at her company. I’m so lucky I didn’t go."
"It’s okay. It’s all over now," Jiang Miao said with a smile, pulling her into a hug and soothing her unease.
