The morning after was a study in contrasts. Sunlight poured through the skylight, gilding everything in molten gold, the ancient stone walls, the rumpled furs still scented with sex and sweat, the beast man sleeping beside me with one possessive arm thrown across my waist. Ravin lay on his stomach, his face turned toward me in a way that made my chest ache, peaceful in a manner I had never seen before. The tension that usually lived in his jaw, his shoulders, even in the constant twitch of his ears, all of it had melted away, leaving behind something soft, almost boyish. The lines of his face had smoothed into something vulnerable, his full lips slightly parted, his golden hair falling across his forehead in a way that begged to be touched.

I should have felt content. Instead, I felt exposed.

Every time I tried to meet his gaze, when he stirred, when his eyes fluttered open and found me watching, I was assaulted by memory so vivid it felt like reliving it. His mouth on me, hot and desperate and reverent. His fingers curling inside me, finding places I didn’t know existed. The sheer, overwhelming size of him as he pushed into me that first time, stretching me until I burned, until I gasped, until I begged.

But then, gods, then, after he had spent himself inside me, filling me with heat, his seed dripping down my thighs, I hadn’t let him rest. I had been the one to whisper more against his ear. I had been the one to roll him onto his back and climb atop him, taking him deep before he had even fully softened, riding him with a hunger that shocked me even now. I had lost myself completely, grinding down on him, using him for my pleasure, my nails scoring his chest, my breasts bouncing, my head thrown back as I chased my own release with a single-minded desperation that bordered on feral.

I had ridden him like a bitch in heat, and he had loved every second of it, his hands gripping my hips, his eyes dark with worship, his voice ragged as he urged me on, as he begged me not to stop, as he roared my name when he spent himself inside me a second time, still hard, still hungry, whispering filthy, beautiful promises until we had collapsed tangled together, his heartbeat thundering against my back.

And now, in the harsh light of morning, I couldn’t bear to meet his eyes. Because I had shown him exactly how much I wanted him. Exactly how wild I could be. And the vulnerability of that exposure, the fear that he might think me too eager, too shameless, too much, made me want to bury myself under the mountain of furs and never emerge.

"Good morning, my mate," he rumbled, his voice rough with sleep and satisfaction.

"Morning," I mumbled, staring resolutely at the ceiling, at the dancing dust motes, at anything but the naked adoration in his eyes.

He propped himself up on one elbow, his golden hair falling across his forehead in a way that made my fingers twitch with the need to push it back. His eyes traced my profile with a hunger that had not been sated by one night, or two, or the dawn that had found us finally spent. "You’re blushing."

"I’m not."

"You are." He leaned in, his nose brushing my heated cheek, inhaling deeply with a groan that vibrated through his chest. "And you smell like me. Like us. Like the smell of us fused together, your tight wetness still dripping with my seed, your body knowing it’s mine." His tongue darted out, tasting the shell of my ear, making me shiver. "I like it. I want you to smell like this always."

I pushed him away, but gently, my palm flattening against the broad expanse of his chest, feeling his heart kick against my touch. "I need to get up. Do things. Be productive."

"Productive?" He laughed, the sound warm and teasing and so damnably pleased with himself. "Krys, you’re my mate. My queen. You don’t need to do anything."

But I did. I needed to move, to think, to fill my hands with tasks so my mind would stop replaying every gasp, every thrust, every moment of being stretched so full I thought I might truly split apart, and the devastating, earth-shattering pleasure that had followed. I needed distance to process the enormity of what we had done, what I had given, what he had taken with such overwhelming diligence.

---

The village was alive when I stepped outside, but the rhythm was different from anything I had known in my old life. Beast men moved with purpose, hunting parties assembling with weapons that gleamed in the sun, warriors training in circles that kicked up dust, cubs tumbling in the dirt with tails lashing and laughter ringing. And the women... the women watched from positions of power. Some lounged in carved stone chairs, their bellies rounded with pregnancy, their faces serene as attendants fanned them. Others directed servants with languid gestures, every need anticipated before they spoke, every whim treated as law.

Lisa had told me this was the way. Women were treasures. Queens. Sacred vessels. Their sole purpose was to bear cubs and be worshipped, to inspire men to greatness through their very existence.

It made my skin itch with the need to do something.

I spotted Leon returning from the journey with his father, his dark hair wind-tousled, travel dust coating his boots, blood smeared across his cheek from some recent kill. He bounded toward me like an eager hound, a plump bird slung over his shoulder, his smile bright enough to rival the sun itself.

"We finished the negotiations early," he announced, breathless with excitement, his dark eyes drinking me in as if he had been starving for the sight. "Father went ahead to speak with the wolf king, but I wanted to bring you something. I hunted this on our way back, thinking of you the entire journey." He held up the bird, something like a chicken, if chickens grew to the size of turkeys, its feathers still iridescent in the light. "Shall I prepare it for you?"

I studied the bird, then studied him, the hopeful set of his ears, the way his tail swayed with barely contained joy. "I want to cook."

He blinked, his ears flattening with confusion. "Cook?"

"Yes." I stepped closer, keeping my voice light, practical, avoiding the way his eyes darkened when I was near. "I want to make something for all of you. A meal." I clasped my hands together to keep from fidgeting, from touching him, from accidentally inviting something I wasn’t ready for. "I’ll handle the seasoning and preparation. You just need to clean it. Pluck the feathers, gut it. Can you do that?"

Leon hesitated, his ears flattening further with uncertainty. "There’s no need for you to tire yourself. I can prepare it, or the servants..."

"Please?" I leaned in, employing the full force of my smile, the one that made dimples appear in my cheeks. "I want to contribute. To feel useful. To give you something that isn’t..." I gestured vaguely at my own body, at the implied intimacy that had defined my relationships so far. "Something else."

He sighed; a sound of defeat wrapped in such profound affection that it made my chest tight. "What would you have me do?"

"Do you know what rice is?"

"The Crane clan trades it. Small white grains, like seeds?"

"Yes!" I seized his arm without thinking, my enthusiasm finally shattering my awkward reserve, my fingers curling around the hard muscle of his forearm. "I need rice. And clay pots, deep ones. And herbs. Mint, lemongrass, anything fragrant. And salt. Lots of salt."

He stared at me as if I had spoken in tongues, his head tilting in that adorable, confused way. "Clay pots? We use those for washing, for storing water."

"We can cook in them too. Please, Leon. Trust me."

He looked at me for a long moment, his dark eyes tracing my features with an intensity that made heat rise to my cheeks, and something in his expression shifted. Admiration, perhaps. Or the first stirrings of something deeper than the crush he had confessed, something that looked dangerously like love.

"I’ll get your rice," he said softly, his voice rough with emotion. "And whatever else you need. For you, Krys, I would bring you the world itself."

---

The preparation took hours, and I threw myself into it with desperate focus.

Leon returned with two clay pots, rough-hewn but serviceable, and a sack of rice from the Crane village, a trade that had cost him a promise of future favors and one of his best hunting knives, I later learned. I sent him to pluck and gut the birds while I built a second fire, smaller than the main pit, perfect for slow simmering rather than searing heat.

The stream water was clear and cold, perfect for stock. I set one pot to boil with the bird bones, adding generous handfuls of salt and the herbs I had found in the medicine storage, wild garlic, fragrant roots, something that smelled like thyme. The scent began to rise, rich, savory, complex, unlike anything the beast men had smelled before. They cooked their meat directly over flames, charring the outside while the inside remained bloody, tearing into it with teeth and claws. They had never thought to extract flavor, to layer tastes, to transform raw ingredients through patience and heat into something entirely new.

When the broth had turned golden and fragrant, the fat shimmering on the surface, I added the rice, watching the grains swell and soften, absorbing the essence of the bird until they were plump and tender. The second bird I roasted simply over the main fire, to accompany the soup, but the soup itself was the star, creamy, aromatic, studded with tender meat and bright herbs that burst with flavor on the tongue.

I served Ravin first. He took the clay bowl, staring at it as if it were a mystery from the gods, then sipped tentatively. His eyes widened, his ears perking straight up, his tail going rigid behind him.

"This..." He took another sip, then a gulp, then practically inhaled the contents, his throat working. "This is warm. And... complex. How did you make water taste like this? How did you make it fill my mouth with so much... so much feeling?"

"It’s soup," I said, my cheeks heating at his praise, at the way he looked at me as if I had performed actual magic. "The rice absorbs the flavor. The herbs release their oils into the liquid. It’s basic, really. Where I’m from, everyone knows how to make soup."

Leon tried his next, and the sound he made was nearly indecent, a groan of pure pleasure that started in his chest and rumbled outward, making me blush to the roots of my hair. "It’s like drinking comfort," he murmured, his eyes fluttering closed, his tail wrapping around his own wrist in a gesture that looked almost like self-soothing. "Like being wrapped in warmth."

He opened his eyes then, looking from me to Ravin, who sat with his arm draped possessively over my shoulders, and something flickered across his face. A shadow. A longing so sharp I felt it in my own chest.

"Like the feeling I imagine I’d get if..." He trailed off, his ears flattening slightly. "Never mind. It’s delicious, Krys. Truly."

He took another spoonful, but his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes, and I felt the weight of what I hadn’t given him yet pressing down on my shoulders like a stone.

I served the king and Lisa next. They ate in silence at first, the proper dignity of royalty, then with increasing speed, their reserve giving way to hunger. Lisa finished her bowl and held it out for more, her eyes bright with unshed tears.

"Child," she said, her voice thick with emotion, "you have given us more than a meal. You have shown us that we have been eating like savage animals when we could have been eating like..." She searched for the word, her hands trembling slightly. "Like beings fit for royalty. Like civilized creatures."

I smiled, awkward but pleased, my hands twisting in my lap. "It’s just soup."

"It’s magic," Ravin corrected, pulling me down to sit beside him, his arm draping heavy and warm across my shoulders. His hand found my knee under the table, his thumb tracing circles that made me shiver and remember exactly how those same fingers had felt inside me last night. "You’re magic. Every part of you."

---

"Oh!" Lisa’s voice cut through the contentment like a bell. "Leon, you’ll be moving your things to the west wing tonight, won’t you? To share quarters with Ravin and Krys?"

My face paled at the thought.

"Yes!" Leon beamed, his earlier shyness replaced by pure, uncomplicated joy that made my panic feel even more terrible. "I’m so excited to begin our life together properly. To sleep beside you, Krys. To wake with you. I’ve dreamed of nothing else."

My mind racing, my heart hammering against my ribs. Two of them. In one bed. Every night. How will I, what if they both want, what if I can’t, oh god, what have I agreed to?

"Child, you’ve gone pale. Perhaps you’re tired from the cooking?" Lisa suggested, her maternal concern wrapping around me like a blanket, her hand cool against my forehead. "You mustn’t exert yourself, dear. Females in your condition need rest."

"I’m not," I started to protest that I wasn’t pregnant, then realized with dawning horror that wasn’t what she meant at all. "Actually, a bath. I would like a bath. At the stream."

"I’ll accompany you," Leon said immediately, rising, his hand finding the small of my back in a gesture that was already possessive, already comfortable.

I opened my mouth to say I wanted to go alone, with Ravin, preferably, just the two of us, so I could process this panic in private, so I could ask him what the hell we were supposed to do with two mates in one bed. But Leon looked so eager, so hopeful, his dark eyes shining with the promise of finally being allowed close to me, and I remembered that he was my mate too now. That I had promised to try. That he had waited so patiently while Ravin claimed me first.

"Alright," I said, my smile tight but genuine. "Two lookouts are better than one, I suppose."

Ravin stood as well, his hand finding mine, his fingers threading through my own with possessive intent. "Three, actually. I’m coming too."

Not helping, I thought, even as my heart fluttered at his protectiveness, at the way he refused to let me out of his sight after the intimacy we had shared. Not helping at all.

---

The stream was just as I remembered, crystalline and cool, shaded by willows that dipped their branches into the current like fingers testing the water. But everything felt different now. The intimacy of the night before hung between Ravin and me like a secret only we shared, and Leon’s presence added a tension I couldn’t name, a charge that made the air feel heavy.

The boys shifted without prompting, their forms blurring and reforming in that way that still made my breath catch. Ravin became the golden lion I had first met, mane rippling like fire, eyes glowing with inner light, massive paws silent on the moss. Leon transformed into a sleek black mane lion, smaller but no less dangerous, his amber eyes fixed on me with unwavering attention, his muscles coiled and ready.

"Don’t look," I called, stripping off my fur wrap, then the worn cotton panties I’d scrubbed clean that morning for what felt like the hundredth time, my last piece of my old world, since going without still felt too strange. Naked now, my heart hammering with the vulnerability of being exposed before them both. "Guard the perimeter or something. Be useful."

Two grunts answered me, one rumbling and deep, vibrating through my chest, the other softer, almost amused.

I slipped into the water, gasping at the cold that shocked my heated skin, then sighing as it embraced me, soothing the aches of last night, washing away the evidence of our coupling. The boulder I perched on was smooth, worn by centuries of current, and I let the water rise to my chin, closing my eyes, trying to quiet my racing thoughts.

Two husbands. One bed. Forever.

"The water feels amazing," I murmured, more to myself than to them, my head falling back against the stone.

"Indeed it does," Ravin’s voice rumbled from the bank, startling me. He had shifted back, his human form draped in nothing but sunlight and shadow, every inch of him on display, the broad shoulders, the narrow hips, the heavy muscle of his thighs. He was already half-hard, I noticed, my face burning. Already wanting again.

"Ravin! You promised not to look!"

"I promised no such thing," he said, his smile wicked, his eyes darkening as they roamed over my exposed skin, the water doing nothing to hide my curves. "I promised not to look while you undressed. You’re already in the water. The rules have changed." He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a growl that made my toes curl. "Besides, I’ve seen every magnificent part of you already. I’ve tasted them. I’ve claimed them. What is there to be embarrassed about, Krys?"

I splashed him. He laughed, and for a moment, the awkwardness lifted, replaced by something simpler. Something like joy.

Leon emerged from the trees as well, also human, also naked, and my face burned hot enough to rival the sun itself.

I shouldn’t look. I couldn’t stop looking.

Dark hair clung to his forehead, wet from where he had clearly already bathed upstream, water droplets tracing slow, torturous paths down his chest, his stomach, lower still. His skin glistened in the dappled light, smooth and taut over muscle that rippled with every breath, leaner than Ravin, where his brother was broad and heavy with power, Leon was carved, sinewy, every line of him defined with deadly grace. But oh god, he was almost as massive where it counted, thick and heavy against his thigh, and I could see the weight of him, the length, the sheer size of him, and I couldn’t look away.

I jerked my gaze away, my cheeks flaming scarlet, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard I felt dizzy.

Were all beast men this blessed? Was it something in their blood, their nature, their animal forms? I had thought Ravin exceptional, a glorious anomaly, but Leon... Leon was hung like a god in his own right, and the thought of eventually taking that inside me, of being stretched and filled by him too, sent a confusing rush of heat straight to my core.

He looked between us, Ravin’s teasing smile, my flustered indignation, the way my breath came too fast, and my eyes kept drifting where they shouldn’t, and his own smile bloomed, slow and sweet and genuine, without a trace of jealousy. If anything, he looked pleased. Pleased that I had looked. Pleased that I had liked what I saw.

"May I join you?" he asked, hesitant, his hands hovering as if afraid to reach for me. "The water looks inviting. And I... I would like to be close to you. Both of you."

The word "no" formed on my tongue, automatic, defensive, a shield against the intimacy I wasn’t prepared for. I wanted to tell him to wait, to give me more time, to let me adjust to one mate before adding another to my bed.

But then my eyes caught the faint shimmer of the binding mark on his neck, the same invisible tether that connected him to me, to Ravin, to this life I had agreed to build. We were bound. Mated by contract if not yet by flesh. I had promised to try. Promised to let him in, eventually.

I looked at them both, my golden prince who had claimed me so thoroughly last night, and my dark shadow who waited with such patient, heartbreaking hope. The panic fluttered in my chest, a trapped bird beating against my ribs.

"Come in," I said, the words tasting of surrender, of obligation, of a promise I intended to keep even if my heart trembled at the keeping. "The water’s fine."

And as they slid into the stream, flanking me, their heat contrasting with the cool current, their bodies brushing against mine under the water’s surface, I realized that I was already learning to want this. One bath at a time. One touch at a time. One impossible, beautiful day at a time.
