Chapter 65: Volume 1, - 65: The System That Had Been Waiting
The alarm on Ren’s phone had not rung yet when his eyes opened at 5:15 a.m.
Yesterday, Monday, 10 April, had been his final day. He had handed his vest and name badge to Endo, cleared his locker, and stepped through the back stockroom door for the final time.
Ren exhaled slowly, letting his shoulders sink back into the futon. The silence of the small apartment did not feel heavy; it felt open. Then he looked at the clock on his desk and realised he had nowhere he needed to be for more than three hours. The openness became strangely blank. For years, somebody else’s schedule had always dictated what came next.
He sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the bedding. Standing up usually came with a dull tightness in his lower back and a sudden heavy pressure on his knees, but this morning his body moved without that familiar groan of resistance. When he reached down to pick up his trousers from the back of the folding chair, he noticed the shift immediately. He pulled his leather belt through the loops and pulled it tight. The tongue passed the worn, cracked hole he had used for two years and slipped easily into the second hole past it.
He stood before the narrow bathroom mirror to shave. He was still visibly overweight. His jawline was far from sharp, and his chest and belly filled out his clothes heavily, but the bloated softness in his cheeks had receded. Bending over the basin to rinse his face no longer crushed his breathing. When he pulled on a charcoal button-down shirt he had bought back in February, the fabric no longer strained against the buttons across his stomach or pinched uncomfortably at the back of his neck.
Before leaving for his morning appointment, Ren opened his leather briefcase on the low folding table and systematically checked his documents. Today was the formal estate review. If it closed cleanly, the System would finally determine whether he qualified for Silver. He gathered the Marui Credit Services zero-balance confirmation for account ending 4108, his final QuickMart employment termination paperwork, the active Kawashima retainer agreement, Okada Stationery completion records, Akiyama Bakery’s paid-work file, Nanami Shindo’s official part-time employment contract, and the KBS business operating-account ledger.
His phone buzzed on the desk. A text message notification appeared on the screen:
Suzune: Morning! Good luck with the review today. Call me when you’re finished?
Ren: Morning. I will. Good luck with the bakery rush.
He tucked his briefcase under his arm, locked his apartment door, and walked out into the cool morning air.
The review room at Kanzaki Fiduciary Services was quiet and cold. Mizuki Kanzaki sat behind the desk in a conservative suit, her neat dark bob framing her rimless glasses as she examined the documents laid out between them. Aoi Tachibana sat in the adjoining chair, reviewing the narrow legal clause regarding the formal termination of the estate’s provisional oversight.
"The zero-balance confirmation for the Marui Credit Services account is fully verified," Mizuki said, her tone crisp and unhurried as she turned a page. "The final employment termination notice aligns with the estate file. However, Kisaragi-san, we have a discrepancy on page four of your internal entity documentation."
Ren leaned forward, his hands resting on his knees. "A discrepancy?"
"The client acknowledgement from Okada Stationery is valid," Mizuki said, pointing her pen at the line. "The problem is your internal completion cover sheet. It records 31 March as both the service-completion date and the payment date, although the bank settlement posted on 3 April."
Ren swallowed a brief prickle of frustration. He had brought an ironclad debt release, expecting a swift ceremonial review. "The work was completed on the thirty-first, Kanzaki-san. The deposit settled after the weekend."
"The work being performed is not the issue," Mizuki replied calmly, looking up over the rim of her glasses. "Fiduciary oversight requires exact alignment between the service date, the internal ledger entry, and the bank statement. Tachibana-san, does the legal release permit an immediate administrative correction?"
Aoi looked up from her document, keeping her tone strictly professional. "Correcting the internal payment date does not alter Okada-san’s agreement or acceptance. Kisaragi-san may amend and initial the cover sheet directly."
Ren took the offered pen, amended the date entry on the cover sheet, and applied his initials. Mizuki inspected the correction, applied her official seal to the summary file, and closed the folder with a clean snap.
"The reviewed records satisfy the estate’s release conditions," Mizuki said. "Provisional oversight is formally closed."
Twenty minutes later, Ren unlocked the door to Suite 302. The office was quiet; Nanami was not due until Wednesday afternoon.
He set his briefcase on the desk, sat down in his executive chair, and closed his eyes. The moment he let out his breath, a sharp blue light bloomed behind his eyelids, filling his vision with a rapid sequence of System notifications.

Ren stared at the panel. The Metabolic Foundation Potion had not remained endlessly active. It had given him the push he desperately needed, but his own effort and the foundation it left behind had sustained his progress over the past month. Five kilograms was not a complete transformation, but it was real, measurable progress.
The panel dissolved, replaced by a deep silver glow that flooded his vision.

Silver light surged across his vision, and adrenaline tightened his chest as the meaning of the words reached him. He had survived the robbery, the collection notices, the exhausting QuickMart shifts, and the fear of financial ruin. He had faced the debt instead of hiding from it, cleared the balance, built a small company, employed Shindo-san properly, and forced his neglected body to move again. QuickMart was behind him. He was allowed to want more.
’Money. Better clothes. A proper home. Time that belonged to him. For once, he wanted all of it.’
The silver light condensed into a heavy, ornate chest hovering above his desk.
