Chapter 294 - 135: Zhao Xin’s Jealousy
"Even though we’ve had such wonderful conversations and become like close confidants..."
She spoke with some difficulty, fidgeting nervously. "I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt a special sort of closeness to you.
"But... I’ve never thought about looking for a Dao Companion.
"And you’re a little... old. I don’t think I could accept that.
"I-I’ve just never thought of you in that way..."
Xu Lei listened, momentarily stunned.
He finally understood. He clearly could have left earlier, but he had chosen not to.
The young woman must have been touched by the gesture.
After all, even for a powerful expert, an attack like that would have consumed a great deal of Magical Power.
So she thought he was in love with her!
"What are you thinking?"
Xu Lei let out an exasperated laugh and couldn’t resist lightly flicking her on the forehead. "To tell you the truth, I’m your grandfather."
"What?"
His granddaughter covered her forehead, taken aback. "You’re my grandfather?"
"That’s right," Xu Lei said. "I was the one who carried you to the Daoist Sect all those years ago. You were just too young to remember.
"Otherwise, why do you think I’ve been so good to you?
"Why do you think I didn’t split the Demon Core with you?
"I originally didn’t plan on telling you this. I don’t want my children and grandchildren to become entangled in my karma.
"But I never imagined you, a silly young girl, would let your imagination run wild like this."
"Oh, so that’s how it is. I thought... I really thought..."
His granddaughter couldn’t help but say, "Well, it’s your fault for not telling me the truth! You were being so nice to me for no reason. Anyone’s imagination would run wild!
"But this is great! So I have a grandfather!
"And my grandfather is this amazing!
"Grandfather, you were so incredibly powerful just now!
"Aren’t you in the Bodhisattva Core Realm? How can someone from the Buddhist Sect’s Bodhisattva Core Realm be so strong?"
Of course, she had no idea Xu Lei had just used explosives, not a Buddhist Technique.
Xu Lei didn’t explain this to her.
Half a month later, Xu Lei and his granddaughter arrived at her Daoist Temple.
According to his granddaughter, the old man and the young man who had attacked them were connected to an old grudge.
Apparently, she and the young man had once fought over a Little Spirit Monster. At the time, it had been a simple contest of skill, and she never expected him to hold such a grudge over it.
To think he would actually bring in that old man to make such a ruthless move against her.
His granddaughter wanted Xu Lei to stay with her for a while, so he didn’t leave, settling into the Daoist Temple.
Then, one day, Xu Lei unexpectedly ran into Zhao Xin at the Daoist Temple.
"Xin’er?"
"Uncle Hui Chi?"
The two of them stared at each other, dumbfounded.
Neither had ever expected to meet again here.
After some explanation, he learned that Zhao Xin had gotten to know his granddaughter’s master over the past few years.
The two had become good friends after training together in a secret Daoist Sect cultivation ground.
Seeing the looks on Xu Lei’s and Zhao Xin’s faces, his granddaughter glanced back and forth between them, a thoughtful expression on her face.
She immediately pulled Xu Lei aside to ask him what was going on.
With nothing to hide, Xu Lei told her about his past relationship with Zhao Xin.
"But Nun Jin Xin doesn’t seem to have another Dao Companion, does she?"
His granddaughter immediately stroked her chin, analyzing the situation for him. "Why don’t we test it? Let’s see if she still has feelings for you."
Over the next three days, his granddaughter deliberately interacted with him frequently, acting quite affectionate.
Their grandfather-granddaughter relationship was already good, so their close interactions appeared quite natural.
"You two?"
Zhao Xin looked utterly shocked. "Um, you’re not... developing *that* kind of relationship, are you?"
"Nun Jin Xin, what’s with the big reaction?" his granddaughter said with deliberate innocence. "Does love have an age limit? If two people are truly in love, why should age matter? I’m not a child. I’ve been cultivating for decades and I’m confident in my own feelings! You don’t need to worry about me! Senior Hui Chi... he’s a very good person!"
"Didn’t you say you don’t love me anymore?" Xu Lei asked as well. "So why are you asking about this now?"
"I’m just... I’m just..." Zhao Xin stammered, "I’m just worried about her on behalf of her master."
After saying her piece, she turned and fled.
For a moment, Xu Lei couldn’t figure out what Zhao Xin was truly thinking.
"Grandfather, Nun Jin Xin definitely still has you in her heart," his granddaughter said. "That was totally an excuse just now. She’s just jealous! She must still like you."
Xu Lei remained silent.
He still hadn’t decided how to handle the issue with Zhao Xin.
If he wanted to forcibly keep her by his side, to play out some fantasy of a domineering man’s forceful love, he certainly had the power to do so now.
But if it made Zhao Xin unhappy, Xu Lei had to wonder if it was worth it.
Another three days passed.
His granddaughter’s master appeared.
When she saw Xu Lei, she recognized him as the man who had brought her disciple to the temple all those years ago.
She also learned that Xu Lei was the girl’s grandfather, meaning there was no way they could be heading towards becoming Dao Companions.
However, the granddaughter immediately pulled her master aside and explained the situation.
Her master then put on an act, expressing her firm opposition to her disciple’s involvement with Xu Lei.
She didn’t explain the truth of the matter to Zhao Xin.
This was, of course, the granddaughter’s idea—to get her master to play along, to provide some support in this little play, all to see if Zhao Xin still had feelings for Xu Lei.
The granddaughter, for her part, put on a grand show of pursuing love in defiance of her master’s objections.
This left Zhao Xin completely stunned.
What was even more unexpected was that on this day, Jin Xuan actually arrived at the Daoist Temple.
With him was an Old Daoist Nun with a full head of white hair.
She was Jin Xuan’s master.
But even from a distance, the way their eyes met suggested a closeness that was far too intimate for a master and disciple.
