Chapter 306 - 138: Bizarre Creepy Spirit
Even so, some people were already alarmed, whispering amongst themselves.
The little female beggar had probably been driven away for this reason before, so she didn’t wait for anyone to chase her off.
She snatched up her broken bowl and began to crawl away on her hands, struggling to escape.
However, she was apparently too hungry. After crawling only a short distance, she seemed too weak to muster any strength.
Xu Lei sighed at the sight.
Although he didn’t know how this beggar girl had ended up in such a state,
she was a truly pitiful sight.
Those mortals were afraid she carried a disease, afraid of being infected.
But Xu Lei wasn’t afraid.
After all, Xu Lei had Magical Power.
And even if his Magical Power couldn’t stop it, Xu Lei was already very old.
’If I die, I die.’
’I can just start a new life.’
’It’s no big deal.’
Thus, he wasn’t afraid.
So Xu Lei walked over, stopping in front of the starving beggar girl who was crawling with her head bowed.
"This roast chicken... I suddenly don’t feel like eating it."
Xu Lei handed the roast chicken to her. "Here, you can have it."
She froze.
She unconsciously raised her head to look at Xu Lei.
But she quickly remembered her hideous face and immediately lowered her head again.
Xu Lei didn’t waste any more words on her.
He stuffed the roast chicken, still wrapped in oiled paper, into her arms and turned to leave.
"Thank you, sir."
The little female beggar’s voice came from behind him.
But Xu Lei didn’t look back.
The little female beggar immediately unwrapped the paper from the roast chicken.
She looked at the fragrant, golden-brown roast chicken inside.
She couldn’t help but stare for a moment.
Then, she immediately took a huge bite.
But just then,
a few able-bodied male beggars nearby
all turned to look at her, even getting up to walk in her direction.
As she ate the roast chicken, her expression changed.
Then she tried to crawl away.
But as soon as she turned, she saw another beggar approaching from the other side.
Just as despair filled her heart,
"I’d like to see who dares try and steal it."
An old voice called out coldly, "All of you, get lost."
The other beggars who had been about to surround her immediately scattered.
The little female beggar turned her head and saw that the old man in white with the hat, the one who had given her the roast chicken, had actually turned around and come back.
This was, of course, Xu Lei.
Xu Lei had indeed intended to leave.
However, he quickly noticed that the other beggars were about to steal the roast chicken he had just given the little female beggar.
After all, these beggars had probably never managed to beg for such good food before.
It would have annoyed Xu Lei if the chicken he’d given the little female beggar had been snatched away and eaten by others.
So Xu Lei had walked back.
The little female beggar glanced at Xu Lei.
But she quickly lowered her head again,
hiding her ugly face.
Then, she buried her face in the roast chicken and began to eat voraciously.
Xu Lei couldn’t see her expression.
But he did see tears, like glistening pearls, falling one by one onto the roast chicken.
Xu Lei didn’t say anything more.
He just stood there, his hands clasped behind his back.
Once he saw that the little female beggar was nearly finished eating,
Xu Lei turned and left.
After the little female beggar swallowed the food in her mouth,
she held up the remaining chicken bones.
She raised her eyes, about to thank him again,
but saw that the old man was no longer there.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t wanted to thank him again.
She just wanted to finish the food quickly,
lest it be snatched away later.
Although those people wouldn’t dare try to steal it while the old man was standing there,
she knew that the time of a benefactor like him was very precious.
Also, she was simply too hungry!
Xu Lei didn’t think much of it.
He had only acted on a whim.
「Five days later.」
In those five days, the little female beggar did not appear on that street again.
Xu Lei thought she had left the city.
Until one day,
as Xu Lei was heading to another restaurant in the city,
and passing through a street in the western district,
he saw the little female beggar again.
It turned out she had moved to a different street to beg.
Still wearing tattered clothes and a worn-out hat, she begged with her head bowed.
That day, she had managed to beg for a steamed bun.
It came from a few young men in fine clothes, who had asked her with sneering smiles if she was very hungry.
Then, they threw the bun onto the muddy ground and stamped on it with their feet.
But despite this,
the little female beggar still crawled over, frantically picked up the bun covered in mud and footprints, and began stuffing it into her mouth.
All the while, she mumbled her thanks.
Watching this scene, Xu Lei felt a knot form in his stomach.
However, he didn’t intervene to help again.
’After all, many people in this world are suffering. Everyone has their own destiny.’
’I’m not a savior.’
’I’m just a man who has renounced the world.’
He took a step, intending to move on.
But unexpectedly, at that very moment...
"Father, Mother!"
Xu Lei was startled to hear the little female beggar shouting.
She was scrambling across the ground on her hands, like a skinny, sick dog, rushing toward a middle-aged couple in plain clothes who were among the pedestrians.
The middle-aged couple froze, stunned by her cry.
As they turned and saw the little female beggar crawling toward them, their expressions went blank.
But they quickly came to their senses, both raising their sleeves to cover their faces.
Then, the two of them blended into the crowd and quickly fled.
The little female beggar could only stare blankly at the sea of people that had swallowed the man and woman.
"Monster, monster."
At the same time, the surrounding passersby erupted in panicked shouts,
causing the little female beggar to quickly lower her head again.
She then began to crawl away again, moving with surprising speed. As she passed by the filthy, half-eaten bun, she even snatched it up.
