Chapter 48: Comprehending the Thunder
CRACKLE! BOOM!
The Nine Heavens Thunder Prison was an absolute domain of destruction. Purple lightning rained down from everywhere, like spears of a vengeful god.
Trapped in the center of it all, Lin Yuan moved as a frantic blur. He attempted every method at his disposal to break the cage. He channeled his qi into his right fist, delivering a devastating, mountain-shattering punch directly at the domain. But the formation simply absorbed the impact, sending a violent shockwave rebounding right back up his arm.
He tried to use Immortal Cloud Step, shifting his weight to turn into a wisp of mist. However, the unstable spatial turbulence within the prison actively stopped the movement art before he could even phase out.
He was completely trapped in a cage of destruction.
Bolt after bolt struck his shoulders, his chest, and his back. Each strike carried the destructive weight of the late-stage Core Formation realm.
Outside the domain, Patriarch Xu Canghai hovered safely, throwing his head back and laughing.
"Struggle, little rat! Struggle until your meridians burst and your bones turn to ash!" Xu Canghai roared, his hands continuing to channel qi into the prison. "The Nine Heavens Thunder Prison is absolute!"
Xu Canghai watched with a mixture of admiration as Lin Yuan took another direct, point-blank hit to the chest. The young man stumbled, but he did not fall.
"I must admit," the Clan Head called out, his voice echoing clearly through the thunder, "your physical body! To endure the continuous bombardment of my thunder without instantly vaporizing... that body of yours is truly something. If not for your body, you would have already been utterly destroyed, leaving your vulnerable soul bare to be instantly erased by my lightning!"
Another massive barrage of lightning slammed into Lin Yuan’s back. The sheer pressure of the domain finally forced him down.
"But there is a limit to how much any body can endure!" Xu Canghai continued, crossing his arms as he looked down at the kneeling Lin Yuan. "You cannot escape. You can only delay your inevitable demise!"
On his knees, amidst the blinding flashes of lightning, Lin Yuan gritted his teeth. His pupils darted across the chaotic web of lightning enclosing him.
Heaven and Earth form all things, Lin Yuan thought, attempting to dissect the very foundation of the domain. Everything has a root. If I can comprehend the underlying technique, I can unravel it and simply step out.
He observed everything, even Xu Canghai qi weaving the cage together. But even with his staggering comprehension ability, the complexity of the formation eluded him. The Five Thunder Arts were a flawless legacy, refined and perfected by generations of Thunder Lords over thousands of years. It was simply too profound, too intricate to be comprehended in a matter of seconds while under continuous bombardment. It was like trying to decipher a forgotten language in the dark while drowning in a raging river.
It is not enough, Lin Yuan realized, a bolt of lightning grazing his cheek and drawing a thin line of blood. My perception is still too narrow to see the truth of this.
Then...
The Origin Soul Revival Pill!
Among its effects was the ’Soul Foundation Enhancement’—a permanent strengthening of the soul’s foundation that drastically increased Divine Sense, spiritual perception, and innate talent for Dao comprehension.
Without a fraction of a second’s hesitation, Lin Yuan accessed his system inventory. With a mere thought, the supreme divine pill materialized directly within his mouth. He swallowed it.
Instantly, a notification chimed within his mind.
[Ding! Soul Foundation Enhanced. Comprehension Ability +10,000!]
The moment the Origin Soul Revival Pill dissolved within Lin Yuan’s body, an indescribable transformation quietly took place.
There was no surge of spiritual qi, nor any spectacular phenomenon that shook the heavens and earth. Instead, the transformation occurred somewhere far deeper. His soul seemed to have been washed clean by an invisible river of origin, while the faint impurities that had accumulated within his consciousness were completely erased.
His Sea of Consciousness became clearer than ever before, vast and tranquil like an endless starry sky.
More importantly, his comprehension had undergone a qualitative transformation. It was not simply that his comprehension had become faster. It had become deeper, as though a veil had been lifted from his eyes. The laws of Heaven and Earth were no longer merely concepts. They had become visible threads.
Lin Yuan slowly raised his head. The first thing he noticed was the thunder. The vast Thunder Prison still surrounded him, countless bolts of lightning intertwined through the sky, roaring like furious dragons as they continuously descended toward his position. Every strand of lightning contained terrifying destructive power, and the oppressive might of the technique was enough to make an ordinary Core Formation cultivator tremble.
Yet Lin Yuan merely stared. For the first time, he could truly see it. His eyes narrowed slightly.
"This thunder..."
Lin Yuan slowly stretched out his hand. A bolt of lightning descended from above and struck directly toward his palm, yet instead of dodging, Lin Yuan allowed it to land there.
Crackle!
Black and silver lightning danced across his fingers. He felt no pain. Instead, his expression gradually became one of fascination.
"So that is how it is."
His voice was extremely soft, yet there was an indescribable profundity within it.
"This is not ordinary lightning."
Lin Yuan slowly closed his fingers around the bolt of thunder. The lightning struggled violently within his grasp, but it could not escape.
"The creator of the Five Thunder Arts did not simply gather spiritual qi and transform it into thunder. Nor did they merely imitate the destructive power of heavenly lightning. This thunder contains a trace of the essence of the Heavenly Dao itself."
His pupils flickered. He had understood. The reason this thunder felt fundamentally different from ordinary lightning was because it had once belonged to something far greater.
"Heavenly Tribulation Thunder..."
Lin Yuan murmured quietly.
"Whoever created the Five Thunder Arts must have survived a heavenly tribulation and refined a portion of its essence into their own cultivation art."
The realization left him somewhat astonished. A heavenly tribulation was Heaven’s judgment. When a cultivator attempted to go against Heaven’s will, Heaven would descend with thunder to test their resolve. The thunder was destruction, but within destruction existed creation. Within punishment existed transformation. Within death existed rebirth.
Lin Yuan’s gaze became increasingly profound.
"Dao is one. One gives birth to two. Two gives birth to three, and three gives birth to the ten thousand things."
His fingers tightened around the lightning.
"Thunder is one of those ten thousand things."
His voice became firmer.
"But if all things originate from the Dao, then thunder also originates from the Dao."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Dao is thunder."
"And thunder..."
Lin Yuan’s crimson eyes flashed.
"...is also Dao."
The moment those words left his mouth, his Dao Heart trembled. The surrounding Thunder Prison suddenly erupted with countless bolts of lightning, yet Lin Yuan remained completely unmoved. His mind was no longer focused on the technique itself. He was looking beyond it, looking toward its origin.
Ancient cultivators often said that a river may have ten thousand branches, but all waters return to the sea. With that, the Five Thunder Arts were merely branches, the Thunder Prison was merely a branch, and the lightning before him was merely a branch. But behind all of them existed something deeper. The Dao of Thunder. And behind the Dao of Thunder, there was the Origin.
Lin Yuan’s eyes swept across the Thunder Prison, and suddenly countless flaws appeared before him. His expression became strange.
"Too many flaws."
He shook his head.
"This Thunder Domain is fundamentally incomplete."
The more he looked, the more imperfections he discovered.
"The thunder possesses the essence of heavenly tribulation, but the creator merely used that essence as a source of power. They refined the thunder, strengthened the formation, and created an incredibly powerful suppression technique."
"But they never truly understood the Dao contained within the thunder."
Lin Yuan slowly took another step forward.
"Thunder is not merely destruction."
"Thunder awakens."
"Thunder judges."
"Thunder destroys."
"Thunder gives birth to new life after destruction."
"Yet this domain only knows how to destroy."
His voice carried an almost pitying tone.
"It has thunder, but it does not possess the Dao of thunder."
A cultivator could imitate the shape of the heavens, imitate the roar of thunder, and imitate the descent of heavenly lightning. But imitation was ultimately imitation. A painted dragon may resemble the heavens, but only a living dragon possesses the spirit of the heavens. The Five Thunder Arts had captured the form, captured the power, and even captured a trace of the Heavenly Dao’s essence. But they had failed to capture its true spirit.
Lin Yuan smiled.
"This is the difference between knowing thunder and understanding thunder."
His foot landed upon the ground. Step. The Thunder Prison trembled. Step. The countless bolts of lightning surrounding him suddenly began to distort. Step. The oppressive force that had previously filled the entire domain weakened around his body. Lin Yuan continued walking forward without using a teleportation technique, without shattering the formation with brute force. He simply walked.
The thunder attempted to suppress him, but his Dao Heart remained unmoved. The spatial restrictions attempted to bind him, but his understanding of the underlying principles had already surpassed the limitations of the formation. The countless bolts of heavenly lightning descended toward him, yet they unconsciously parted before reaching his body. It was not because Lin Yuan had become stronger than the thunder. It was because he had begun to understand it.
"Thunder is born from Heaven and Earth," Lin Yuan murmured. "If I understand its origin, how can a mere imitation of thunder imprison me?"
He took one final step, and his foot crossed the boundary of the Thunder Prison. Instantly, the oppressive aura vanished. The countless lightning bolts behind him continued roaring, but Lin Yuan was already standing outside the domain. He turned around and looked at the vast Thunder Prison behind him as a profound light flashed within his eyes.
"Perhaps the creator of this technique believed they had grasped the essence of heavenly thunder."
"But the moment thunder loses its Dao, it is but a thousand steps away from harming me!"
