Chapter 103 - 102: Meeting with the Lord of the Zhao Province
In the second reception room of the main hall, standing beneath the soft glow, Lin Yuan and Lord Zhao Shenming remained completely motionless, their gazes locked in a collision of wills.
To a mortal or even a low-level cultivator, the room would appear perfectly peaceful, occupied by two men simply looking at one another. But to anyone possessing the perception of the Great Dao, the space between them was a warzone of conflicting intents.
Lin Yuan stood tall, his aura, representing the absolute Peak of the Nascent Soul realm, was like a raging ocean of lightning. It sought to crash against the shores of reality, roaring with unyielding supremacy.
Yet, even when faced with this overwhelming tidal wave of power, Lord Zhao Shenming did not flinch. The ruler of Zhao Province stood there in simple robes, his aura completely restrained. Instead of radiating pressure, his presence felt like a bottomless abyss, deep enough to swallow everything that approached it.
He had successfully crossed the terrifying threshold of the Spirit Severing Realm, fundamentally severing his mortal attachments and transcending the limitations that bound ordinary cultivators.
The roaring ocean of Lin Yuan’s intent poured toward him, only to disappear silently into the depths of that unfathomable abyss. It was a stark demonstration of the chasm between their realms.
"You possess a remarkable foundation, Daoist Lin," Lord Zhao Shenming finally spoke, his voice entirely devoid of spiritual weight, yet echoing with a resonant clarity that commanded the very air to carry his words. A polite, placid smile curved his lips, successfully breaking the lethal tension. "I have governed this province for over eight hundred years, and I can count on a single hand the number of individuals who can meet my gaze without their Dao Heart trembling. You are truly an anomaly."
Lin Yuan did not lower his guard, but he seamlessly retracted his aggressive intent, allowing the ambient spiritual qi to slowly refill the space between them.
"I am merely a man walking his own path, Lord Zhao," Lin Yuan replied, his voice a calm. He walked over to one of the chairs and gestured for the Lord to sit. "I do not seek to be an anomaly. I only seek to protect what is mine."
Lord Zhao Shenming accepted the gesture, taking a seat with the effortless grace of a monarch. Lin Yuan sat opposite him, his deep purple eyes maintaining a perfectly guarded look.
"And you have protected it beautifully," Lord Zhao noted, his starry eyes briefly flicking toward the doors that led to the rest of the estate. "To acquire a sanctuary of this magnitude, and to host such a magnificent union... it is a testament to your capability. However, it is your capability that has drawn my immense curiosity. And, inevitably, the curiosity of others."
The probing had begun.
Lord Zhao Shenming leaned forward slightly, resting his hands on his knees. "My close friend, Envoy Zhao Wuhen, filed a highly detailed report regarding your existence merely a few days ago. In his report, he specifically, and adamantly, categorized you as an Early Stage Nascent Soul cultivator. A powerful one, possessing an incredibly physical body and a bizarre soul foundation, but an Early Stage expert nonetheless."
The Spirit Severing master’s eyes narrowed infinitesimally, attempting to pierce through Lin Yuan’s body. "Yet, today, as I watched you stand upon that altar beside your bride, the slight aura radiating from you was undeniably that of the Late Stage. In fact, to my elevated perception, it feels as though you are standing upon the absolute precipice of the peak. Tell me, Daoist Lin... how does a cultivator traverse centuries of required cultivation in a matter of days? What secret, or ancient treasure, has fortune bestowed upon you?"
Lin Yuan’s expression remained as impenetrable as a sheet of divine ice. He obviously knew exactly what the Lord of the Zhao Province was doing. Lord Zhao Shenming was not simply making polite conversation; he was actively attempting to map Lin Yuan’s origins, his benefactors, and his potential weaknesses. The strong feared the unknown, and a man who could apparently skip cultivation realms at will was the ultimate terrifying variable.
If Lord Zhao suspected that Lin Yuan possessed a temporal artifact like the River of Years Pagoda, the entire province would instantly turn into a bloody battlefield to claim it.
"The Heavens are vast, and the Great Dao is infinitely mysterious, Lord Zhao," Lin Yuan answered smoothly, deploying the classic, philosophical deflection common among wandering immortals. "Envoy Zhao Wuhen’s perception, while sharp, is ultimately limited by the confines of his own understanding. What he perceived as an ’Early Stage’ foundation was perhaps merely the surface of a much deeper, dormant reservoir that I had long kept sealed."
Lin Yuan casually poured two cups of tea from a teapot resting on the table between them, sliding one toward the provincial ruler.
"As for my swift advancement," Lin Yuan continued, his tone perfectly even, "a true epiphany cannot be measured by the turning of the sun and moon. Sometimes, absolute enlightenment strikes like tribulation lightning. One moment you are standing in the dark, and the next, the path forward is illuminated. I simply walked the path that was revealed to me. There is no ancient sect backing me, nor is there a primordial master pulling my strings. I am exactly as you see me."
Lord Zhao Shenming accepted the teacup, taking a slow, measured sip. He did not believe a single word of the philosophical misdirection. Cultivation required immense energy that simply could not be materialized out of thin air, no matter how profound one’s ’epiphany’ was.
But looking at the confidence radiating from the young man, Lord Zhao realized a crucial truth. Lin Yuan was not a naive, arrogant youth who could be easily intimidated by authority, nor was he a loose-lipped fool who could be tricked into revealing his trump cards. He was a master of the board, playing the game with terrifying precision.
To press the issue further would require hostility. It would require utilizing soul-searching arts or physical subjugation. And while Lord Zhao Shenming was confident his Spirit Severing cultivation could eventually crush Lin Yuan, the resulting battle would undoubtedly destroy the emerald valley, obliterate the visiting sects, and shatter the foundational stability of the entire Zhao Province. The collateral damage was simply unacceptable for a ruler.
"A flawless answer, Daoist Lin," Lord Zhao Shenming chuckled softly, placing the teacup back onto the table. The probing had hit an impenetrable wall, and the Lord gracefully accepted the stalemate. "It seems the Heavens truly favor you. A solitary dragon rising from the dust is a rare and beautiful spectacle. I only hope that this dragon remembers the province that hosted its ascension."
"As long as the province respects the boundaries of my sanctuary, the province will have absolutely nothing to fear from me," Lin Yuan replied, drawing a clear, uncompromising line in the sand.
The political dance had concluded. Lin Yuan had established his sovereignty, and Lord Zhao had confirmed that it was rational enough to be bargained with.
"Now, if you will excuse me, Lord Zhao," Lin Yuan said, slowly standing up from the chair. The cold, calculating edge in his eyes softened just a fraction as his thoughts returned to the master pavilion. "The wine flows freely in the courtyards, and the banquet will last until dawn. But my bride is currently waiting for me in our chambers, and I have no intention of keeping her waiting on the night of our union."
Lord Zhao Shenming did not stand to block his exit. He remained seated, his expression calm and unreadable.
"Of course," Lord Zhao said smoothly, offering a polite nod. "It is the duty of a husband. Go to her."
Lin Yuan offered a brief martial bow and turned his back on the Spirit Severing expert, preparing to channel his spatial authority to teleport back to Bai Qingyue.
But just as the crackling purple lightning began to spark around Lin Yuan, Lord Zhao Shenming’s voice drifted through the reception room, carrying a sudden, terrifying weight that made the very fabric of space shudder.
"By the way, Daoist Lin..." Lord Zhao’s voice suddenly became more casual, yet beneath that calm tone was a chilling precision that made the atmosphere subtly tighten.
He paused.
His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked directly at Lin Yuan.
"If my perception is not mistaken... your beautiful bride’s cultivation is currently being suppressed by a Soul Transformation restriction."
The words fell softly.
But Lin Yuan’s expression changed.
