Chapter 173: The Trial [3]
Seraphina moved first.
She crossed the platform in a low sprint, wind qi gathering around her boots with each step, and drove her palm into the ground at the Echo’s feet.
A column of compressed air erupted upward directly beneath the creature’s chin.
The Echo’s head snapped back, then came down hard, the neck wound stretching open as the head dropped forward under its own weight.
Damon was already there.
He drove the Chaos Devourer into the wound with everything behind it, tribulation lightning screaming down the blade, the spatial edge tearing through the gap in the scales rather than against them.
The sword went deeper than the first cut.
The Echo’s body locked up.
All four limbs went rigid at once, the tail stopped mid-swing, and the creature stood completely still for three full seconds, the only movement the faint trembling that ran through its body from the neck down.
Then it collapsed.
The mountain peak shook when it hit the ground, a crack splitting the stone platform from one edge to the other, and Damon rode the shockwave down to one knee with the Chaos Devourer still buried in the wound.
Silence.
The crimson sky above them had stopped moving.
Damon pulled the blade free and stood.
The Echo of the First Dragon lay across the shattered peak, its eyes still open, the dying-star light behind them fading slowly from white to amber to a deep, quiet gold.
The intelligence was still there, watching him from the ground, but the aggression had gone completely.
Seraphina walked up beside him and looked down at the creature.
"It’s not fighting anymore." she said quietly.
"Yes, It stopped moving." Damon agreed.
The air in the cavern shifted, a pressure change that came from everywhere at once, and the voice of the Azure Dragon Spirit filled the space around them the same way it had in the crystal chamber below.
"The trial is complete."
The Echo’s body dissolved, not violently, but slowly, pulling apart into streams of golden light that rose upward and gathered above the mountain peak in a dense, spinning mass.
The Azure Dragon Spirit’s voice came again.
The golden light above the peak held its shape for a moment, spinning slowly, before the Azure Dragon Spirit’s voice returned.
"One trial remains."
Damon looked up at the mass of light. Seraphina stood beside him, her breathing still uneven from the fight, one hand pressed against the cut on her ribs.
"The first trial measured your strength," the spirit continued. "The second measures your mind."
The golden light contracted, pulling inward until it was no larger than a fist, and then the air around the mountain peak changed entirely.
A pink mist rolled in from nowhere.
It came from the ground, from the air, from the cracks in the shattered stone beneath their feet, rising in slow curling columns that caught the fading crimson light and turned it soft and warm.
The temperature on the peak climbed several degrees in seconds. The mist carried a scent that had no name, something between warmth and want, and it settled against the skin like a second layer of heat.
"Prove your mental strength," the Azure Dragon Spirit said. "Resist your desire."
The voice paused.
"The hardest desire of them all. The easiest to relieve. The hardest to resist."
Another pause.
"Lust."
Beside him, Seraphina went very still.
Then her face changed.
The color rose from her neck to her cheeks in a single wave, a deep, involuntary flush that she clearly had no control over, and her jaw tightened like she was clenching her teeth against something.
Her hand, the one that had been pressed against her ribs, drifted downward without her seeming to notice.
She caught herself and yanked it back.
"Don’t," she said, to herself more than to Damon, her voice strained and low.
Her hand moved again.
Damon watched her fight it. Her whole body had gone rigid with the effort, shoulders locked, free hand balled into a fist at her side, and sweat was already forming at her temple despite the cool stone around them.
He turned his attention back to the mist.
It was thick around him now, the same pink warmth pressing against his face and arms, and he waited for the pull that Seraphina was clearly drowning in.
It didn’t come.
He felt the mist. He registered the warmth, the scent, the way it was clearly designed to reach into something deep and drag it to the surface.
He could recognize what it was trying to do the same way a person could recognize a locked door.
But the door didn’t open.
Then the system spoke directly into his mind.
[As an Incubus Lord, this effect cannot reach you.]
The voice was calm and matter-of-fact, the same tone it always used.
[When the Blood of the Incubus Lord awakened, you passed through the full force of lust itself. What this mist is attempting to trigger no longer exists as a weakness in you. You have already mastered your own lust.]
Damon stood in the middle of the pink mist with his arms at his sides and said nothing.
Around him the mist continued to thicken. The warmth pressed harder. The scent deepened.
He felt none of it as a compulsion.
He felt it the way a man who had already eaten felt the smell of food. Present. Recognized. Completely without power.
Seraphina made a sharp sound beside him, something between a gasp and a curse, and her hand moved again before she grabbed her own wrist with her other hand and physically held it in place.
"Stop," she said through her teeth. "Stop. Stop."
Her legs were shaking.
Damon glanced at her without expression.
She was still fighting it.
The mist was winning ground by the second, her knuckles white around her own wrist, her breathing coming in short, controlled bursts that were getting less controlled by the moment.
He looked back at the golden light above them.
The Azure Dragon Spirit was watching them both.
Damon stood completely still in the center of the pink mist, unaffected and waited for whatever came next.
